ltd repress! dominik eulberg’s second ep on his label apus apus features the track “roter gitterling“ (eng. basket stinkhorn / red cage) on the a side and „tintenfischpilz“ (engl. octopus stinkhorn / devil s fingers) on the flip side. a. roter gitterling the fleshy red cage of this kind of mushroom reminds of a merging of an upside down shopping string bag and an alien. not allowing any objection, the track strides forward with determination towards a musical interpretation of this strange being. a fulminant kick drum counteracts in a very prosaic way the bitter-sweet pads. in a very narrative fashion the track gathers speed and flocks diverse soundscapes and disembogues in a break of harmonical expanse. conciliatory and in a hedonistic way the bass drum eventually stitches together what belongs to each other. b. tintenfischpilz this bizarre looking extraterrestrial mushroom evokes at first glance the image of a dead octopus or radioactive vegetable. as in a science fiction movie four to six tentacles sprout and raise out of a common stinkhorn and later spread into a star shape look. in an unparalleled manner this stunning progression is executed musically by eulberg with a high degree of elaboration. all done with elegant blend of continuous progression and permanent change the track wreathes itself towards heaven, whereas fragmented melody artifacts pour into the shape of a miraculous emergence.

shape-shifting post-punk quasi-legends bourbonese qualk are finally getting a bit of the shine they so richly deserve after years in obscurity, not least thanks to the retrospective compilation on mannequin back in 2015. now platform 23 are reissuing their classic album -laughing afternoon, originally released back in 1983 and having lost none of its impact. its a slippery, shape-shifting creation that veers between uneasy soundscapes and gutter-dwelling funk, with some truly visionary signal processing, electronic textures and more besides in the mix. its a crime this crew arent held in the same regard as their other early 80s post-industrial peers, but at least the wrongs are being righted now.

combo lulo returns to names you can trust for their sophomore single, digging deeper into the diversified sounds of the caribbean that helped define their debut. while the first single took a jamaican foundation south into the neighboring continent, fusing the sensibilities of rock steady with those of classic afro-latin orchestras, this single goes far east. inspired by the heady and sublime sounds of foundational ska mixed with east african influences, (think buster s islam, don d s addis ababa or further east), the sieve & the sand is a brand new composition within this natural order, albeit with the fortune of different reggae eras and studio styles to draw from. divided into two parts (but also available seamlessly as it was played in the studio), combo lulo s talented players move effortlessly from the galloping shuffle of ska into a deep and dark, roots radics-styled instrumental. its a lovely ode to the original styles of reggae, but also another impressive accomplishment that will surely leave listeners and new fans in anticipation of the shape of things to come for combo lulo.

daniel brandt, co-founder of acclaimed german ensemble brandt brauer frick, is set to release his second solo album for london imprint erased tapes on october 12th. titled channels, the new record follows the release of the london and berlin based producer’s solo debut eternal something from 2017. the seven-track lp is brandt’s biggest statement yet, with the album’s thrilling avant-garde framework interweaving chord-driven techno, orchestral flourishes, rich electronic textures and hints of dark cinematic pop. following on from eternal something, which captured a contemplative kind of isolationism, with channels brandt set out to create an album that captures the essence of minimalism whilst lending it to a more playful context. after performing and recording steve reich’s six pianos in a group of six, brandt began regularly composing long meditations on the piano, something that permeates the sound of the new record. its frenetic energy and shape-shifting identity was also born out of touring with his new band eternal something — comprised of brandt on piano, drums and synthesisers, pascal bideau on guitar and bass, plus florian juncker on trombone — and a desire to translate both the sound and spiritual unity of their live shows in which musicians locked together to create an intriguing meld of expansive works.
