chicagos richard pegue was one of the most intriguing figures to come out of the chicago soul scene in the 1960s and 1970s. raised during the citys fertile doo-wop era, pegue immersed himself in music immediately. he cut his chops as a mobile dj, record store clerk and recording artist before stepping into the booth as one of chicagos most enduring radio personalities to grace the citys airwaves. the nickel and penny labels featured in this compilation are twin sides of the same eccentric coin, pegue himself.

local talk is proud to present the first release on their sub-label 1nce again. this is where we bring back classic and forgotten house gems from back in the day with new mixes and reworks. for our first release we have gone back to 97 and a producer known and respected worldwide in the house music community with more than 200 production credits under his belt. joshua michaels aka joshua iz perhaps best known for his collabs with dwayne washington as iz & diz but has of course used many other pseudonyms over the years for releases on labels like prescription, balance, classic, junior boys own, om and guidance. the return was first released on heard, sub-label to tom middletons evolution / universal language productions ltd. using his moniker circulation. the track can easily be described as a mammoth house track, clocking in just over 12 minutes. its one of those pieces of music that’s stood the test of time and why iz has been a major force in electronic music for so many years. on the flip much hyped duo prommer & barck stripped it down from its original costume leaving not much left of the source material resulting in something that we best could describe as old school warehouse meets uk bass. its pretty raw and definitely a basement sureshot!

alex and bill met 16 years ago when bill signed one of alex s first productions (is this the rhythm? by rhythmnvibe) to a new york label he was running. alex, whose father lives in the us, was a regular visitor to the states and they sent many happy hours together hanging out at the sound factory bar and comparing maw dubs. when bill returned to the uk in 1996, they had a few sessions together making house music, though neither of them can remember why they never finished anything or, indeed, what became of the tracks. fast forward a few years and they finally got back into the studio to make sweet music together under the moniker hotel motel. since then they have created a rich seam of work that some have already described as, like salvador dali with his pants down being fellated by deirdre barlow. few would disagree.

whether on his own or with nick hoppner as my my lee jones has been djing and making music for more than a decade. in 2008 jones released his debut full-length lp “electronic frank” on aus music. his solo releases and remixes have appeared on labels such as aus music, ostgut ton, liebe*detail and cityfox and last year, he did his first ever mix cd for the world famous watergate club. next up from the talented producer is a futuristic 4-tracker on aus, incl 2 remixes from george fitzgerald and midland. for the lead track moment, jones offers up a bass driven house number that hints at his jazz roots whilst pushing forward into garage territory. for the remix, george fitzgerald delivers his most straight up, heads down house production to date. next up is duvel, a characteristically quirky jones production, bouncy and deep all at once but with a bass line that will hold its own at peak time. midland steps up for the remix, twisting it into a moody multi-genre convergence like only he can.

after a short break aaron jays influence records is back with another top draw 12 from none other then liquid master random movement. having released an album on markys innerground label last year, random movement was keen to drop a 12 inch on influence and what a 12 it is. both sides are dance floor killers, both on heavy rotation at fabric and have been supported by the likes of spy, fabio, lynx, grooverider & bailey.

russian cool cat sportloto (aka andrey rublev) is making quite a name for himself in the remix realm. he comes from the western urals and makes some of the most splendid electronic music around.the title track >will i< started out as an instrumental on our sister labels tirk03 sampler.after bags of attention and plaudits we decided to nudge things into vocal-drive and add a nifty vocal.michelle bee ably assists with a smouldering and sultry tones. if chord movements and darting electronic lines and arpeggios are your thing then you will love the original.on the remix tip fabrizio mamarella (1/3 of clap rules and bearfunk big dog) chips in with the remix.he takes the organic analog route and trims things down nicely for the dance floor.to round off the package and give an enticing glimpse into the cool production skills of andrey,weve also included the track metamorphosis.andrey is busy at work on his debut album for nang as we speak!stay tuned.

on the a-side we have the cheeky >24 hour party sausage<, where garry takes us back to the sounds of the early 90s uk rave scene. its a peak time old school vocal affair with a raw, analog bassline, stuttered drums and chopped up stabbed vocals. stepping up for remix duty on this future classic is the mole who flips the original on its head and creates a dancefloor creeper for those darker club moments. winding the bassline and metallic beats between the rawness of the original groove and imparting his trademark spooky percussion, rhythms and eerie vocals. b-side >vacation in sunderland< is a love story with a firm salute to the classic down tempo us house of the 90s. its time to dust off those shell suits, high top sneakers and cazal shades and get ready for another slung back, funked out garry todd house jam with growling, rolling bass and seductive vocals and keys. on the remix front fellow illusion family members death on the balcony step up with a classic house masterstroke that compliments garrys slower and sleazier original. here dotb pick up the pace in a brilliantly original rework that accentuates the vocals and piano hook to create a summer house anthem - a stylish finish to another diverse installment from the illusion crew.

mysterious newcomer jamie blanco displays a clear skill in assembling the kind of raw, atmospheric late 80’s chicago house so close to our hearts - the kind of late night jams which can just as easily roll in and out of string drenched disco cuts as they can moments of strobe-lit intensity. beautifully executed, and another sureshot from cynic!

in a time when rock critics saw the prodigy as a glorified keyboard player flanked by a couple of weird and scary dancers, liam howlett & co showed the world how dance had evolved away from the club scene and into the festivals & arenas.
and they did that by staying true to their own sound. while dance moved from acid house to rave to ambient to breakbeat & drum n bass, the prodigy changed their brand of hard-hitting breakbeat with king-sized hooks and unmissable samples only sparingly.

>hydrothermal< is a stripped back 4/4 excursion with rattling hi-hats and lots of bass. >lights down low< rolls along on a syncopated techno beat, with deadly snares and a droning, almost industrial feel bringing to mind the work of regis and t++.

powerplay from: iron curtis, quarion, dplay, jazzmina, oliver goldt, tristen …. and your mum! when leaves are falling down its always time for some heart-warming music. so we here at frank music decided to do another special 12inch this year. our good friend monosoul made this handsome house-track called >ignore the traffic lights< that we just love so much it gets a singlesided limited release. we are sure you know the feeling when riding your bike, cruisin your city at night: damn those traffic lights! well, be careful when crossing the street, though.... a real warehouse smash for sure and who needs b-sides anyways.

after a short production break, the russian techno duo easy changes (denis cast & kilrill silas) are back with a 12 inch on the berlin/london based label, mean records, run by cesare marchese (cesare vs disorder) & federico benedetti (onirik). the lion is also a good drummer fits in nicely with the labels love of minimal techno productions that feature original sounds, moody melodies and deep aural landscapes. easy changes gained recognition in 2007 with two back to back hit releases on foundsound records. in 2009, they were the first ep from nervmusic, a moscow based label that focuses on unconventional techno started by cast, silas and friends. seated comfortably between the avant-garde and the dancefloor, the release has something for everyone. the title track, the lion is also a good drummer is an epic, crawling minimal techno production filled with stripped down percussion and abstract found sounds perfect for after-hours. on the flipside is the uptempo, quirky and tribal burlesque, replete with spliced vocal samples, snares, cymbals, bleeps and claps. for the burlesque remix, french producer doubtingthomas shows off his lifelong obsession with percussion and its rhythmic allure with the addition of a trippy drum solo midway through the track.

after his recent excursion remixing groove armada, morton sorenson returns to the fold with a stunning little release for tirk titled >the burn down ep.< for those that dont know, morten is in his early twenties and hails from a small fishing village in rural norway. his dad probably spent many years in new york and the records that he brought back encouraged a love of american house and disco on the impressionable morton. >burn down (original)’ is an exercise in uplifting, stripped back house music. less is more here, the vibe stays rich and never loosens its grip. the rhythms skip on top of the beat and the vocal interludes make for a real vivid experience. the lpz remix on the other hand sits back a bit, the rhythms are solidly swung and the vocal appears more affluently in the mix. it feels smooth and definitely cool. to top the package, were served up some chi-town flavours with <owe that 2 u.< sustained strings and a slo-mo shuffle builds, then peels away to a hollowed out organ breakdown. a hauntingly affected vocal and clever edits ensue then drop back into the beat, articulated now by the clack of a tough stacatto synth. in our eyes, a brilliant end to a fantastic package

the musical heavyweight matthias vogt is back on polytone. after the success of his first ep >together as one< - sold out vinyl edition, excellent feedback from top djs, first track on the big city beats compilation vol. 13 cd 3 - the second ep arrives on polytone. the polytone boys knew right away that >copying the future< has the potential to be a classic. a track with character and a high recognition value: hypnotic rave stabs and uplifting chords combined with a driving groove will send shivers down each true music lovers spine. >copying the future< is delivering deja vus without copying the past - a great track with a past and a future, deeply rooted in the here and now. >stillach< claps its way into every listeners ear. the b side of the ep named after a mountain stream in the allgäu is calm and also powerful with a slow, minimal and very tight groove. vogt is going deeper! matthias vogt once again demonstrates his great musical skill and versatility.

hailing from the usa, boston ma, kon has been djing internationally alongside some of the worlds best djs as well as releasing several comps/edits on londons bbe label (kings of series/ off track vols 1-3 along with his vinyl collecting friend amir ) you may have heard his 1/2 hour multi-track remix mix for gilles peterson world wide show on bbc radio 1 a few months back … well here kon makes his debut dance release on the hands of time gold imprint. handling the production and arrangement, kon gives us the original version as well as a dub, pairing of samples and original music he utilizes a very clever 1 bar vocal sample from multi track stems as well as live session players (his gang) to get his vision across. with its punchy drums & warm, feel good vibes ... its a perfect affair for winding down this summer.

troy pierce, marc houle & magda team up to present their first ever trio release on items & things, >down & out vol 1< - which takes its name from their newly created party series - events that are based around the dark & intimate, off the radar, and under the ground. troy pierce starts things off with >majikal<, introducing the eps dark magic with a climbing bassline, scattering, almost anxious percussion and buoyant sound effects panned throughout. ominous atmospheres and weighted textures produce a cinematic accompaniment to surveyors of uncharted terrain. building a continual tension-and-release cycle, the track is a lucid whirlwind of sonic imagery and trickery, balancing visceral sounds with the otherworldly. magda teams up with suade, a producer & friend from newcastle that we are sure to see more of, together they bring forth a true builder, a creeper, the type of track that reveals itself more with each layering sequence. a masterclass in dynamics, >fixation< is a dark groove thats haunted by a chilling vocal, wavering synth vibrato, unexpected melodies, and juxtaposes of funk. angular drums hit alongside swells of percussive echoes but, the focus of the track revolves around the bassline’s movement. as catchy as it is esoteric. marc houles >slowpe< ends the ep with a slightly slower pace, but in a disconcerting way: taking it down a few notches this one that transports the listener to the strangest dimension yet. filtered melodies start the tracks ascent, sounding like a trumpet thats been bent out of shape and played from the void. with dark textures compactly knit into a condensed wall of sound, a low-slung bassline trades places with eerie chords and sparse percussion

for the new musik krause ian simmonds has put a considerable fire under the adrenalin of sensuality so that the cinematic played before the minds eye brings both friends and free-spirited dancers to the same place. that which marked the typical simmonds sound up to now gets from ian a considerable punch from way way down. the club equipment and party-ers will be thrilled - and thats a promise!

the finest moustache bearer since selleck rocked the tv as magnum pi returns. thats correct, sccucci manucci drop a long awaited second release on the fledgling imprint, enlisting a premier cast of continental friends to lay down some class a discoteria! securing the talents of runaways jacques renault is no mean feat for the self styled purveyors of fine music, and the on the prowl boss serves up a beefy disco funk edit in the vein of his killer public release twelve from last year. in support, a cast of rising uk talent serve note of their budding prowess, with tenth circles zoo look indulging in some monstrously expansive beatdown a la the revenge on the aptly titled >early doors<. casino times provide the why didnt i think of that moment with >thats the truth<, a bashmore style take on the de la soul & chaka khan collab which has been burning up sound systems from london to petrcane this summer. young one picture house ends proceedings with aplomb on >blaxploitation< a gritty shaker reminiscent of eddie c in his pomp.

d.j. maaco is back at it again by keeping d.i.e. on the map! with long over due favorites such as dutch friends and move yo body, this will be a 12 inch you dont want to miss. listen as he drops the bass in break it down and bring the funk like no other. as you already know detroit in effect are the knights of pure detroit electro/techno and have one mission, to rock your party!
