emotional especial gathers pace with an eighth release from richard sen, a man whose cultured touch has had a hand in various strands of the uk underground for the past two decades. graffiti artist, graphic designer, music curator, dj and producer are all vocations richard sen has done at one point or another. here he goes solo with the ghost train ep, a dark and brooding release of old school meets new school house jack that takes its cues from 80s new york, italian house and the nascent uk acid house that sen himself documented with aplomb on a 2012 compilation for strut. naggingly familiar samples and a low slung box jam groove drive the spectral title cut forward, whilst sens mastery of delay is shown with aplomb on the dub version that closes out the record. nestled in between is the highlight however in *meteor shower* where discoid basslines merge with psychedelically charged keys and hollowed out steppers percussion.

half baked records starts 2014 with a release from one of his most recently signed residents: enrico mantini.

this time around is the long awaited follow-up to the succesful probe album by roswell return. the original is a mesmerizing piece of minimal electronic music, heavily inspired by composer steve reich. more than 10 minutes of pure synth bliss. on the b-side syncom data take it into deep techno territory with a shuffling and ridiculously low-end remix thats both warm and unsettling at the same time. deep basslines keep pushing everything forward, while the constantly rising church-like organ brings a nervous mayhem quality to it.

the first supply showcase: four label-newcomers range with veteran authority from deep house to driving techno. the opener is a grooving house burner: an infectious loop and low-slung drums build triumphantly. anders hellberg drops in some acid, with a strident 909 beat stalking an open, melodic soundscape. kicking off the flip, label co-owner jb teams up with bostonian paul morse in an icy, tantalizing variation of elastic, swinging deep-house, before stojches outward opens up an ending, its pounding beat laced with bitter-sweet detroit strings.

here it is, the tenth and final chapter in the seaghdha story, as lo shea wraps up a monumental series with a special, limited 12 inch & cd compilation package. first up we get four more new tracks on the wax, its on is an atmospheric, driving house jam complete with melodic guitar effects, which ride the groove and combine with the devilishly deep low end to startling effect. got swagger strips things right back to the bone, a skeletal rhythm framework, those trademark atmospherics and rock solid low end. buchsheff sees us back in familiar lo shea territory, with a powerful warehouse rattler. finally to be sure brings it all home with a cinematic ambient piece. as if that wasnt enough we also have a hand-stamped cd comp, featuring those classic cuts from the earlier part of the series, which are now fetching serious change on the second hand market it is a great package, and a serious send off for what has been a hugely successful & widely supported musical endeavour.

although delivering a mysterious & scantily clad 12 inch is hardly a novel concept these days, we must confess to being more than a little excited when we heard this one! it is undercover time again, and we’re sworn to secrecy, of course… what we do know, however is that this mighty release is an absolute dancefloor sureshot! made up of two long, pitched down and utterly mesmerising workouts kicking off with itaque putant, a mid-tempo, tripped out disco number that marries elements of techno, late 80s balearia and more than a nod towards classic red zone dubs. super low subs and bags of melodic atmosphere conspire to provide a perfect dancing under the stars moment. on the flip timento is a lysergic, tribalistic epic, stitching together a series of ethnic ingredients and overlaying some seriously transcendent modern synth candy. building into the soundtrack for a full blown shamanic vision! a serious platter then, and when the music is this good, who needs more?

the latest drop from retrometro is not for the faint-hearted, as germanys myk derill brings the metal machine music. you are is a stomp and grind monster, with speaker-troubling kicks and torture chamber soundscapes. zerone is a brutal, relentless berlin warehouse workout, with deep reverbs, on-point percussion and a juicy roll on the low end. alert brings yet more of the factory floor pump, with its white noise build-ups and decayed percussion. and the caustic rhythms and haunting synths of between bring another dynamic to the ep! bruising!

a side with original title ep track meets dark groove, soft synths and catchy athmosphere together. also uk based artists, matt fear & kreature - the guys who have placed themselves on the worldwide house scene with resonance records, mexa records, nurvous records releases - are uniting the powers and deliver their version of the track, this is closing the a side. b side opens with low bass influenced remix of track by german based artist, gomma records coworker telonius. the key of this remix can be described as raw, linear and experimental. kevin over (noir music, defected) completes the b side and release in general. the dubby experience of melancholic notes with punchy sub bassline is a perfect banger for dj sets.

we’re really excited about this unusual ep from the unusually talented photomachine, his first outing on wicked bass. ‘black motorcycle’ a dark but deep number, measuredly working its way down into to a solid groove before it lifts its eyes skyward for a breakdown made up of delicate synthwork. ‘good news…bad dope’ is a more skittish cut, with its percussive elements laying low in the mix, whilst circling synths provide a menacing mood that juxtaposes itself with a well-placed vocal sample.

torrebros (numoment recordings / komplex de deep) is a french duo delivering in melted faces a subtle collage of samples and original floating textures. melted faces original mix reminds, by its driving beats and low-slung bass, the early nineties detroit moisture. borrowed identity (mistress recordings / quintessentials), a german-romanian producer, which last productions has been released on dvs1s new imprint mistress, gives here his layback and savoureuse interpretation by rearranging the original sample groove. dj steef (retrofit / gomma / numoment recordings), the mysterious french producer, finalized the ep with 2 more deep and downtempo remixes with a catchy and seductive rolling bass perfectly seated on a powerfull drum loop pattern.

jbla came into being after julian jöckel (midnightopera) and stuart argabright (ike yard, black rain, o13) performed at a party in brussels on the 5th of oct. 2012 on invitation from bernardo risquez & michael langeder (different fountains). they all had met for the first time the year before through michael kreitz from meakusma when different fountains & o13 played concerts in eupen. after staying at different fountains studio the day after the brussels event they set up a rather improvised jam session. julian played synth on a yamaha dx7, bernardo worked the low frequencies on an old eminent organ while michael contributed machine sounds and took care of the live fx engineering. stuart put together some words and brought a beat to the occasion of the jam session at the df studio. during the short euro tour with ike yard, l.i.e.s label head ron morelli and artist svengalisghost came to the paris show and were talking with stuart about the streetwalkers of belleville, specifically the sad chinese hookers out on the street. combined with news about recent foxxconn workers suicides in china and witnessing altercations close to the air bnb where he stayed. the belleville ep are two cuts from that session with remixes from ron morelli + svengalisghost and vereker, pressed on translucent vinyl.

tartelets latest comes from glenn astro. currently residing in essen, he has spent a bit more than half his life djing and producing, first in the realm of hip-hop and more recently with an ear toward dance music. after his first releases in this style in 2011 and 2012, glenn really went for it in 2013 with a trio of eps that showed hip-hops soul and house musics drive are in no way mutually exclusive. this 26-year-old may embrace the latter these days, but when you close your eyes and let his gritty low-end do its dirty work, you will hear plenty of the formers bump still kicking around in there.

yellow is the new black! bright and shiny comes the new ep black harder by south german guy chris milla over the hump. after a smooth wobbling enter into the track, its the majestic sounding melody, which sweeps around you and smells like an early spring messenger.

nofitstate chalk up their 3rd release with the much talked about swedish duo mr. tophat and art alfie providing ‘vretis’, an elongated groove fit to bursting with tension thanks to its extended filtered intro. ‘locked groove’ provides the remix on the flip, opting for a more blissfully melodic approach for those early morning sessions whilst ’takelant’ rounds things off in fine style with a low down and dirty slice of machine-phunk.

we have been a fan of motor city drum ensemble since the brooding and eerie >escape to nowhere< in 2007 - a track that sounded like someone had listened to > french kiss< on acid and then tried to recreate what they heard. so when we started re-issuing romanthonys classics with fresh remixes, mcdes danilo plessow was always someone we wanted to on the project. it has taken 2 years to organise this mix and now it is finally here it doesnt disappoint. taking on > trust<, most people would head straight for the vocal but plessow instead eschews that idea for a warm, low slung dub mix reminiscent of muzique tropique and early glasgow underground releases by studio blue. as a more dj-friendly alternative he also delivered a completely instrumental dub mix.

retrieval is the debut collaborative album from faith coloccia and alex barnett. artist and composer coloccia was a founding member of everlovely lightningheart, and is perhaps best known as one half of mamiffer. she has contributed to recordings by house of low culture, boris and william fowler collins among others, and collaborations with circle and daniel menche are forthcoming. alex barnett played in oakeater but since 2009 has been active primarily as a solo artist, with releases on catholic tapes, draft, nihilist and others.
