das album erschien ursprünglich bereits am 27. september 2005, und zwar beim label decaydance records von fallout-boy-gründer pete wentz. dieser hatte zuvor demos der band gehört und nahm sie unter vertrag, noch bevor sie jemals live performt hatte.
aufgenommen wurden die 13 songs von »a fever you can’t sweat out« in den somd! studios in college park, maryland. für die produktion zeichnete matt squire (good charlotte, the used, taking back sunday) verantwortlich.
das album wurde ein kommerzieller erfolg. die zweite singleauskopplung »i write sins not tragedies« schaffte es in den usa bis in die top 10 der charts.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. ofo the rock company (originally known as ofo the back company) were nigeria’s first acid-rock band. blending hendrix and deep purple with shamanism and a pro-black philosophy, they cut their teeth at fela kuti’s afrika shrine, developing a fearsome live reputation that intimidated every other band in lagos. no one wanted to follow the guys from ofo, not even fela himself.

soul brother records are delighted to release for record store day 2017 one of the most elusive soul lp’s of all time, a truly holy grail album. susan phillips ‘soft sexy soul’ was recorded for sylvia robinson’s all platinum label 1971, pressed in small quantities. few copies have ever surfaced, it is so rare that many collectors doubt if it was ever released, it is not listed on discogs and it has never been recorded as selling on ebay. if an original copy were found today, it would surely sell for a substantial amount of money. the album has that classic early 70’s new jersey orchestrated soul sound. the album contains the in demand 2-step single ‘he knows my key (is always in the mailbox)’, the northern soul floater ‘answer to my prayer’, detroit sounding ‘please don’t keep me lonely’ the multi paced ‘where do i go from here’ and many great ballads like ‘he’s gone’ and ‘this i’ll guarantee’. demand from soul collectors is expected to be high and this album is likely to sell out quickly in the same way that last years ‘this is eleanore mills’ (also from all platinum) and all the previous soul brother records rsd releases have.

ursprünglich war nämlich schon 1998 ein album mit diesem titel als bootleg-variante erschienen. dabei handelt es sich jedoch fälschlicherweise um die aufnahme einer show aus manchester, statt aus der royal albert hall.
