obbatuké are an 8-piece rumba group from santiago de cuba, lead by renowned quinto player carlos guerra. the band are mainstays at the casa del caribe, widely regarded as the epicentre for the eastern rumba scene.
rumba is a percussive-led genre descended from africa which was formed when mixed with spanish influences in the ports of havana and matanzas.
as innovators in the genre, obbatuké have been a huge inspiration to the manana project, and were involved in collaborations at this year�s event with plaid, quantic, nicolas jaar and london based breakthrough act, ariwo. this particular session was recorded at castlesound studios in edinburgh on the band�s first trip outside of cuba. it features three different sub-genres of rumba and an extended yoruba bata piece called orun seco.

(lena platonos) is a greek musician, pianist and music composer. one of the pioneers of greek electronic music, she remains active today. lena was born in heraklion, crete, and grew up in athens. she began learning how to play the piano at the age of two and became a professional pianist before turning eighteen. soon afterwards, she received a scholarship to study in the the berlin and vienna academies , where she was exposed to jazz, rock and middle eastern music. she returned to greece in the late 70s and began working with the hellenic broadcasting corporation.

little beat different issues is a new series focused on reissuing music from eastern european regions previously unavailable on western markets. the first release is a compilation by project orm, the moniker of czech producer team petr and pavel orm. originally formed as a disco group in the late 1970�s, pioneers of electronic dance music in former czechoslovakia, petr and pavel quickly rose to fame as the country�s eminent pop producers. working with the then icons of the communist czechoslovak scene such as karel gott and josef laufer, they stand behind countless hits from that era. however, not many knew that the duo also released their own records, whose sound and artistic direction was different to their mainstream pop productions. this compilation cherry-picks the tracks from 4 different albums released between 1979 and 1984.

even if russian producer gradient logic is found here turning out the business on serbian label disco fruit, the sound on the far away ep comes on like a snappy fusion of garage-ready new york proto house and laid back west coast boogie of the highest order. it s the third vinyl release for tonbe s label, and once more marks the serious clout behind the eastern european operation and its closest artists. just try grooving to the slick bass pops on feel me without being transported to an early 80s dancefloor. there s a more organic funk to lock into on i want you slide, but as ever it s hard to tell where the sampling ends and the musicianship begins on this utterly natural sounding ep.

generator by rodion incorporates hippie dance grooves, middle eastern vibes, simon & garfunkel-esque vocals, lisergic synth licks, and future kraut atmospheres. tracks like bococa hills and phobos berl have a rolling cosmic groove, whilst allee der kosmonauten and run-out head for the dance floor. colazione and riposa! have a more icy ambient feel, whilst alta marea and gamma make good use of rodion�s supreme collection of analogue hardware, producing a pair of synth drive grooves.

skalen ep consists of sleek, functional but no-nonsense techno variations from snitch. leading with >skalen< - a deadly, serrated tool fashioned to carve up the hardest of dance floors and takes you through the tunnel without a torch.>kromag< displays a bit more of the swing that this producer does so well adding darker atmosphere to a killer effective techno banger. the ep rounds up with a terrific laiva remix of kromag. laiva was discovered in the eastern town of kuhmo and made an appearance on wavereform before with a killer t16 record. he makes it all about dub-scuffed kicks here and pulsating bleeps throughout his version of ruthlessly straightforward, point-blank attack for the 48-hour-party people.
