gost zvuk continues its journey to the depth of today s russia experimental music scene with the debut ep from infx, yet another emerging artist from country s capital moscow. young muscovite prefers to work on the margins of popular electronic music genres, using the complex broken rhythmical architecture to create his own kind of introverted club tracks for highly observant and thoughtful listeners. the resulting music is an ever-changing, multifaceted and polychromatic living organism with a constantly mutating structure — a truly unique piece of art that should not be overlooked.

spice 1 is an undisputed west coast legend, who first hit the scene after the n.w.a. and closer to home too $hort explosion of the late 80s. as history showed, he continued that bloodline with finesse and authority. his nasal flow is menacing and strong, and fans have been consistently captivated by his hood tales since his self-titled debut in 1992. if you want thematic range with your mcs, spice isn’t that dude he is all about crime tales and the perils of ghetto life. and he attacks that storytelling sweet spot with each new cut. spice 1 boasted four singles by the time it was all said and done, and breezed to gold status on the strength of cuts like the catchy east bay gangster, the heartfelt tales and truths of welcome to the ghetto, and the thick, grooving in my neighborhood. he even produced the alcohol-themed 187 proof, another of the albums singles, and the hands-down cleverest vocal outing on the lp. sonically, the backdrops on spice 1 range from plunky, keyboard-bassline funk to deeper, fuzzy 70s samples and he sounds strong on top of both. break yourself is fueled with an electro-funk drive, 1-800 spice brings reggae flavor, and peace to my nine gets chunkier, with a well-placed p-funk one nation under a groove sample. presented here on official retail vinyl for the first time since its initial release 26 years ago, spice 1s debut holds the test of time and carries the california gangsta flag with pride. some colors just don’t fade.

one of firecrackers founding fathers returns once more, this time shoving two fingers up to current dj conventions smashing out a 150 bpm electrofunk hybrid. on the flip, two deeper cuts traversing ambient wormholes and reflecting that classic linkwood sound. ultimately, a miscellany of unique, syncopated weirdo sounds, barely orbiting the outer regions of dance music or, depending on how you look at it, three timeless cuts designed for the dance floor, the sofa and all points in bethween.

another year on the hitd calendar, another stunning new solo release with brian case plays paradise artificial. this third album somehow manages to compile and condense the best bits of its predecessors, and the magnificent viridian, glacial universe developed by case since the beginning of his solo ventures is brought to the forefront. the chicago artist centres his elusive, dehumanised compositions around two simple, minimal elements. using just vocals and synths, he has created a simultaneously modern and post-apocalyptic soundtrack, where music exists as the final traces of the footsteps of humanity. pressing on translucent yellow vinyl.

the „will you be there ep” completes the „christophe salin - ep series“. he is taking us on his musical journey and paves the way for cooperation with future artists on his very own imprint „salin records” that he runs with his wife daria salin as a platform for electronic music and art. „to love” is what it’s all about, love your next one, love yourself, love what you do, love music and art. needing a bridge at this point nothing would be sweeter than a little excursion to the french touch sound and vibes of the late 90’s and early 2000’s. so, the a-side ends up with a question „shall i give love another try“…flip side „i’ll think of you” keeps this mood until „your soul” takes us slowly over to the final declaration of love „lullaby for daria“.

after marcin krupa’s jazz laden pumpers on sour edits vol 2, sour edits is back with a four-tracker featuring the first vinyl release from emerging talent braga circuit alongside label boss xxxy. the a1 is the collaboration between the two artists “take you there”. slamming drums, melancholic vocals and soaring soul samples to bring a tear to the eye and a pump to the fist a2 “one i got” is a straight up romantic soul swinger from the boy wonder on his own, craftily chopped samples sit alongside swinging drums to get any good dancefloor moving b1 “i won’t, i never” sees xxxy mixing baltimore breaks with romantic vocals and soaring strings for another tears on the dancefloor moment. b2 “what you do to me” closes out the record with a slap bass fest that builds and builds.......

it doesn t get much bigger than this: adam beyer links up with green velvet and drumcode s outstanding rising star layton giordani for a debut collaboration. some musical partnerships feel fated. both fans of one another s work, for years adam beyer and green velvet had discussed writing music together. in turn, beyer s protégé layton giordani had admired the chicagoan s work for as long as he could remember. when the 25-year-old found himself playing alongside the green mohawked legend at belfast s shine, the spark and subsequent friendship was immediate. with the links now set in place, it was only a matter of time before the trio s creative chemistry would manifest musically. ‘space date was conceived organically and birthed quickly. propelled by green velvet s trademark vocal hypnotism, the triumvirate combine to craft a pumping intergalactic slice of techno laced in melody that s highlighted sets by beyer at awakenings, ushuaia and also edc vegas when green velvet dropped it to a raucous response. the track is complimented by rome future , the product of a year-long series of productions between beyer and giordani. deftly combining crisp drum work, catchy vocal effects and a powerful bassline melody that gives the track an almighty kick, it will be familiar to many who ve followed their sets over recent months.

brendon moeller offers up his set in motion ep on echocord sub-label echo echo this september, comprising three originals from the dub techno veteran. south africa, new york based producer and dj brendon moeller aka beat pharmacy/echologist has long been respected as one of the pioneering figures in ethereal, dubbed-out techno with regular appearances at global hot spots like fabric, berghain and cielo as well as releases on labels like third ear, kimochi, neovinyl and echocord. here though we see moeller joining the roster of the latter’s sublabel echo echo, marking its fourth release. title-track set in motion leads with brendons signature murky synth textures at its core whilst lumpy low-end tones, shuffled hats and spiraling dub echoes fluidly undulate amongst one another throughout. eastern beach follows, and as the name would suggest, nods towards brighter sounds with airy pads, soft bell chime synths and pulsating subs driving the composition alongside swinging, heavily reverberated percussion. economy then closes the package, stripping things back to gritty dub stabs, dusty 4/4 drums and billowing noise sweeps.

after offering-up paratrooper as part of dj tennis recent dj kicks, the israeli duo red axes arrive on life and death for an original ep. sami is a post-moondog shamanic tribal trip, while round combines dilapidated post-goa electronics with just the right amount of cowbells and guitars psych. vego is a lo-if western spaghetti full of tape delays and amplifiers sauce while pulse waves and wind blows on a big russian bell at the title track kalacol. a record that could only come from niv and dori another reconfiguration of the life and death mausoleum.

my favorite robots next release is a very special remix by dj tennis. it initially comes as a 10 white vinyl and will then be available digitally in autumn. mfrs ‘barricade was first released on dj tenniss life and death label back in 2012. it was a huge house track that resonates to this day, so it makes sense the taste- making italian steps up to remix it. he is someone with a cultured take on brooding house and techno, as evidenced by the music he a&rs for his label as well as things like his own standout dj-kicks mix from last year. his new remix is a masterfully melancholic one that starts with a delicate ambient synth line hanging in mid air. breathy vocals eventually arrive to send shivers down the spine and finally, deep, rolling, mid tempo kicks bring a groove that carries you away into a reverie. its made all the more mournful and poignant thanks to some broad synth chords and swirling pads later on and is sure to provide a real centre point of any seriously emotional set. this is a stunning and absorbing single and another high point for my favorite robot records.

up next on amsterdam’s format label is a four-tracker featuring original cuts and remixes by matrixxman, echologist and label boss juan sanchez himself.
the fourteenth format release is definitely one not to miss out on, as it offers material from some of today s most sought-after techno heads. up first is expiration, a joint effort from matrixxman and echologist. this one combines matrixxman’s signature bass and echologist’s one-of-a-kind dub techno flavors across a very trippy canvas. format’s juan sanchez follows with a dark and synth-heavy rework of the track. on fokus, juan displays a more melodic cut propelled by a playful groove. closing things off, matrixxman and echologist turn fokus into a crushing techno track filled with sweeping fx.
format continues with another strong release that’s destined to do the damage.

i like to move it, go on move and can you feel it had already established erick morillo and the mad stuntman as one of the biggest new acts in 1994 - and then came raise your hands . originally starting life as asuca by r.a.w. (another morillo alias on the legendary strictly rhythm label), the addition of the mad stuntman s unmistakable vocals helped give them their 4th top 15 hit of the year. the update comes courtesy of uk producer shadow child, no stranger to chart success himself. -i couldn t wait to get my hands on this one,- added shadow child, who also debuts his acidub edit as part of the record s release. -that infectious riff has been going round in my head since i originally heard it and it is such a honour to get to make 2 versions!-

ellum black, the new sub-label of maceo plexs notorious imprint, focuses on the dark and intellectual side of techno. this second record instalment features spanish producer architectural. following an ep on the main branch of the label in 2017, juan rico aka architectural delivers 3 forward thinking cuts for this record. architectural is known for his detailed and magnetic productions and on ‘a girl with no friends ep’ he goes deeper into the hypnotic edge of his soundscape. the first track we hear ‘romanticism movement’ creates a statement for the vocabulary of sounds rico used for this record such as low frequencies and deep grooves. the title track follows on the b-side with develops on these textures. closing the trio ’never yours, boy’ finishes the ep with another variation of architectural’s romantic techno repertoire.

poolside began as a recording project in a converted los angeles backyard pool house in early 2011, producing sunny tracks of subaquatic indie dance music in this makeshift recording studio. surfacing first in the form of a youtube video for the catchy track do you believe? poolside were soon gaining local and national attention, with djs like james murphy of lcd soundsystem, techno legend derrick may, and disco don todd terje spinning these tracks at events and a growing online following. throughout 2011 poolside continued making waves with a sound called daytime disco through tracks like their cover of neil youngs harvest moon and original tunes. in 2012 poolside worked on a remix for longtime disco punks the rapture and held fans over with a new single and video for a song called slow down as they prepared to release their debut album. that album, pacific standard time, was self-released in july of 2012. after the albums release, remixes for artists like matthew dear, little dragon and fools gold soon followed, as well as rehearsing and touring with a live band and doing dj sets around the world. as thoughts turned to a second album, poolside went on ice for a year to regroup, beginning to work in earnest on another album in the fall of 2016. while still revolving around the sunny, laid-back disco sound of pst, these sessions yielded the additions of up-tempo dance songs and more guitars, and generally more fleshed-out arrangements. poolside surprise released their second album heat in 2017. poolside have over 1.5 million monthly listeners on spotify and have fans all over the world. they are currently on tour as a live band.

plazmot are yovav (known for his past productions on malka tuti and correspondant records as well as being part of the infamous shame on us trio) & assaf bloom, another upcoming talent from the city that doesn’t want to sleep - tel aviv. with their debut release plazmot brings forward 2 very different tracks, showing the versatility in their productions (and amazing live shows!).

mennie and julien sandre team up under their jarau alias for an impressive ep on one records. dubnova features two originals that span hypnotic synths, warm, sonic basslines and intricate spacey layers. for the remix, musical craftsmen dewalta and voigtmann join forces for the first time since their monumental ground effect ep on jan kruger s hello? repeat in 2014. here they showcase the more techno side to their production skills. friends and colleagues, mennie and julien, began the jarau project in 2017 to experiment and push creative boundaries. 2018 saw the release of their interstellar ep on respected vinyl imprint pleasure zone, which will be followed by this heavy-weight offering on one records. tenax resident mennie was named by dj mag as one of the most prominent emerging italian producers. born in france and now based in italy, julien runs the acclaimed blind box vinyl only label, which he started in 2015. meander boss dewalta a.k.a david koch is one of the most admired artists in the industry, not only a talent behind the decks he delivers a remarkable live set and has released a wealth of music on key underground labels. claus voigtmann was originally born in germany but bases himself in london, where he co-founded the underground and conceptual party, toi.toi.musik. this year sees the release of his eagerly anticipated album and a focus on his subsequent imprint, also playing regularly alongside adam shelton and subb-an for their one records showcases

back with another pair of his heavy-hitting hardspace mixes, len faki hands two mighty club-weapons. aimed at no less than unleashing havoc on the floor is the edit of frantic drum-roll-fest lazer beam. already quite a force to be reckoned with, faki manages to beef-up the mix even more, adding rumbling bass-weight and injecting some extra steam to make it roll out until the end. on the flip side there‘s the hypnotic groove of space taxi. captivating and enveloping, this mix alters the original signature bass in order to shift gears into what feals like full forward there‘s no escaping this one! as with all releases of lf rmx, the proceeds of this record will be forwarded to the berlin organization straßenkinder e.v. to be used in actions against child poverty.

master of the moon much like the title, master of the moon has been created very much in a spacey, dreamlike disco influenced vein. perfect for any cosmic dancefloor trip. egarrr! egarrr! provides full on cosmic / disco infused full workout. a cheeky rework on a track of yesteryear, egarrr! is set to alight dancefloors across the country. glitter in the dark with the main hook taken from an iconic speech, glitter in the dark very much sticks with the common galactic theme of the ep. heavily driven by a moog synth-line, this track is set to take dancefloors to another dimension.

california’s the sentiments are back with another dose of sweet soul for all lovers of the low and slow. following the acclaim of their last 45, the group has arrived with another philly infused lovers lament. “what’s so good about saying goodbye” enters like a classic soul record with a signature drums fill leading into heavy hits accompanied by violins, fuzz guitar, vibes, and lush horns arrangements. and to answer the sentiments’ question, what’s so good about saying goodbye is knowing that after you do you can go to your local shop and grab this sweet seven inch. the song and arrangement, like the last, embodies so many elements that make up that sweet soulful sound that keeps reminding people why its better to smile now and cry later. produced and recorded entirely at the incomparable transistor sound studio, you’re gonna need doubles for sure. one for you....and one for your baby.

another very special ep on al zanders a to z label teaming up this time with vocalist sheyi, for a one-off foray into broken beat territory. the story of its inspiration begins with a trip to notting hill record & tape exchange... after asking for some broken beat, the assistant ventured a withering opinion that -won t be monotonous enough, try the house music section instead- turns out it was phil asher of co-op fame - who, after establishing a genuine desire for said genre - sold al a bunch of west london music which became the influence for this ep. allowing sheyi to shine over a bare bones, syncopated rhythm track on the title cut and an equally stripped down satisfy al amps up the groove, with the g.i.t dub, which was made for ig culture s radio show. limited run on these - don t snooze !

brazilian boogie merchants barefoot beats treat us to two very distinctive but equally refreshing flavours on yet another highly collectable 10 inch record. first up they welcome nyc dj & music collector jacques renault on board to exchange the loft for the beach bar as he drops a heavy slice of funk inspired boogie bliss that s perfect for the beach party. on the flip, selvagem s trepanado transforms the party sound by dipping into a more synth driven and edgy 80s influenced brazilian warehouse party vibe that builds to a break so tropical you can actually feel the sunrise coming. tudo bem! vamos!

this summer, my favorite robot records release another of their excellent and immersive full lengths, this time from german production outfit, rework. the trio of daniel varga, michael kuebler and sascha hedgehog aka rework, describe their musical aesthetic as cabaret-independent-house and combine icy minimal structures with catchy euro-girl vocals, anglo-french funk antics and a dash of dance floor melancholy. playhouse, meant and items & things have all released their work, which includes three albums before now. this latest is another musical adventure filled with surprises. this is an effortlessly diverse album that brings a wide range of influences to the table and ties them all together with reworks unique sense of style and cool

it is said that every generation casts its mind back to a previous era in times of crisis, the resources that will allow us to decode the questions of our moment may lie in the myths of another era. le renard bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between lafawndah and composer midori takada, and filmmakers partel oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. as transmitted by takada, the fox appears in both ancient senegalese and japanese folktales as the trickster archetype, belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature.

dâm-funk has left his la home for another dj tour across the european continent. what better way to celebrate this than to release a follow-up record to the infamous architecture release from 2016. architecture ii is an up-tempo, dreamlike journey through the sonic palette of the los angeles based producer. the 12” contains four tracks that are carefully crafted to co-exist on the same record.

4th tilly jam with four deep disco / house slammer
folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can’t stop, won’t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he’s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. “say say say”, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is “shadrach”. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, “impala” is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. “whoo-hoo-hoo” – that’s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you’ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it’s “baden powell dr” as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

firmly imprinting their legacy, amoss & fre4knc present watermark volume 1, the first in a series of devastating collaborative releases. on their own superb, but when producing together, amoss & fre4knc are another beast altogether, an entity capable of untold chaos, with a proven track record. a naturally formed pairing of two minds intricately in sync, the watermark series represents an outlet for the amoss & fre4knc sound.

uk producer pessimist opens the ep. his unique aesthetic of jungle/drum&bass - come - techno certainly makes its presence felt on the a-side as he delivers a monster of a remix, soaked in dark, brooding textures and broken rhythms. another uk techno export makes his debut on soma as shifted lends his remix skills to the package. pulsating and propulsive, shifted exudes pure energy with his version of santolaya. prolific french producer umwelt closes out the ep with his interpretation of belga. an old skool, electro affair umwelt still retains a melancholic edge to the production.

fresh off the back of their debut label release with archie hamilton and venda, subsonic music has delivered another sterling stripped back, dubbed out and groove based release from australia’s dylan griffin & chad b including a catchy interpretation by the internationally celebrated master of minimal sounds alexkid and an exquisite (vinyl only) remix by the critically acclaimed monika ross featuring her trademark groove.

berlin-based american kevin mchugh aka ambivalent is definitely no stranger to the scene. with r u ok on richie hawtins minus label he landed one of clublands absolute hits of 2007 which can still be found lurking in discerning dj’s record cases today. since 2015 he has been providing high quality tracks on his delft label, and he celebrated his cocoon debut two years ago with the daylights ep. together with dutch clone-producer martijn hoogendijk aka alden tyrell, ambivalent has cooked up another serving of straightforward techno complete with rigorous hi-hats, which will no doubt summon up the uncompromising energy of his berghain sets wherever its played. with its powerful incantation of sequential rave signals, wallfall recalls the best days of jeff mills in the form of ultra-modern detroit-oriented premium techno, while detente lays disconcerting industrial distortion over expansive dubtechno for maximum acceleration. the perfect fix for hot nights of celebration.
