massive two tracker from jonny miller on his 2nd edits release on kat.what you did is quite simply a whopper! disco music as god intended it - arms aloft, eyes shut, inhibitions nowhere to be seen, smiles bigger than life itself. what we have here is not an edit as such but a reworking of chaka khans what you did, subtly housed up, re-arranged, chopped, fil-tered and re-mastered within an inch of its life - chaka herself pretty much always sounds in-credible but here the vocal just seems to stand even taller than usual. on the other side we have something in which some of our slightly older party folk may well recognise. dionnes house classic from 88 gets the full edit treatment and the timing on this just seems so right. originally released on the ace bigshot label out of canada (and was just huge in the hacienda), re-mastered, stretched out, re-arranged and making the most out of all those old school stabs, ploddy bass lines and timeless vocals.

roberto bosco has selected in recent months kinys music, to better prepare his first 12 inch, consisting of four tracks, named *damaged memory*. the track *unknown* (a1) leads off the dance of the release on last drop records imprint. it is a proper exploration in an unknown sonic territory to most of the people, and also a difficult element to make out for those who are novice to the visionary component in the musical poetic of kiny. the track starts with rounds of recurring sirens, almost deafening, framed by dark and ghostly noises. something not easily identifiable, ambiguous and unknown, as the title itself says, is perceptible in its sound. all this helps to shape a bad presage that fades away into the mystery.

the original, with a well-constructed bassline incorporates a warm up melody that begins to set the tone for the night ahead. each layer is distinct as the track begins to build itself right to its crescendo when each of those individual layers collectively come together. you can distinctly hear the 80 s like synths that are cleverly inserted into the track which are highlighted by the female vocal samples. the grittier elements add a touch of darkness and instantly transport you to a warehouse club with an intimate atmosphere. the remix, done by the widely loved tech-house duo pleasurekraft jack up the tempo a notch, and add a bouncy groove to the track. where the original brought out a darker side, the remix is more upbeat and settles in well for a peak hour set. bringing that crisp bassline to the fore, and tuning out the melodies to make them a tad subtler it showcases a more tech-house version of the original. there s an added element a slightly more haunted vibe which is coupled together with those gritty and harder elements. all i can conclude is what a tech-house bomb this is from the highly talented pleasurekraft. they always manage to bring something new and unique to every single track they ve ever remixed which truly shows their remarkability as consistently good producers.

nick curly and gorge are welcoming tania vulcano, jose de divinia & audiohell to their debut on 8bit with a massive 4 track ep! the indisputable first lady of circo loco, tania vulcano was there when it all began on those monday mornings back in 1999 and continues to be a beacon for quality underground dance music until today. for her upcoming release she joined forces with jose de divina and audiohell to create yet another timeless piece.

in the late 60s early 70s many american soldiers where stationed all over germany. among those where musicians who played in several army bands like the east of underground who recorded a now sought after album after they had won the special services entertainment showband contest held in frankfurt in 1971. nobody knows which other bands participated in this contest, maybe also the soul explosion which were stationed in augsburg, upper bavaria. around the same time, a man named charles held opened a club in augsburg town called tarantel. furthermore he was running a record label of the same name on which he released a handful of 7inch singles from different, local bands, mainly not funky at all though. the soul explosions release remains the only one in the field of american soul & funk music. the band recorded a fantabulous double sider, one deep funk side with a soulful ballad on the flip which makes both hardcore funk and soul collectors happy. unfortunately there is no more information available about the band, only that they even performed live at the tarantel club.

those generous chaps at aficionado return with their tenth release, eager to extend your summer with a 12 inch ticket to the sun and fun of la isla blanca. as you should know by now, messrs moon and boardman dont do things by halves so rather than hastily booking a scattering of seats on an easyjet airbus, they have plumped for the luxury and bliss of club class on onyricon air, the airline that gives you mas y mas. this pan european consortium, headed up by the production duo of leo mas and fabrice (ably assisted by the writing talent of italo legends rago and farina) formed with the aim of creating the perfect flying experience and their triumph is presented in all its transcendent beauty on the opening track.

decadubs 4 is a vinyl-only companion-piece to hyperdub 10.3, the latest cd in hyperdubs ongoing series of birthday-marking collections. following on from the labels first two 10th anniversary compilations, the third act represented in 10.3 transects and extrapolates forward the hyperdub catalogue from yet another angle, this time following the melancholy vapour trail drafted by burials numerous atmospheric beatless moments. this ep tunes in to those 11 new moments of downcast ambience that comprise half of the cds complete content, resulting in over 40 minutes of hitherto-unknown audio which squarely shoulder their extended play billing.

after nearly a year has passed by - and kitted out with heavy hitting drum timbres, hook laden nuances and a textured palette of unique effects - south african born esa makes a welcome return to the burek family fold with another ep that skirts the boundaries of the dance-floor and soaks up the sights and sounds of those on the peripheral edges. a family thats consisted of many strays and deviants being welcomed in, esas ep is another mellifluous fit for the croatian based house label that prides itself on beats that drip with greasy flavour and a fine follow on from his killer ‘serenity in a forbidden place ep for the label in july of 2013.

serge gainsbourg may primarily have been known outside his native land for the heavy breathing masterpiece *je t aime (moi non plus)*, the only french song ever to top the british charts, but to those at home he stood as one of the more potent cultural figures of post-war france. discover why he is held in such high regard with this 180g double-vinyl set.

first up we have some seriously funked up jazz disco business here, vocals have been stripped out apart from the line searching, fierce drums and percussion, baseline is just sublime with keys to die for singing out over the top, gorgeous guitar with soaring strings, extended to keep those feet happy on the dance floor.

black rox is back with 2 more sneaky soft rocks specials that have somehow been liberated from locked cd wallets and released into the wild for general consumption. the a side sabu dance combines horns, flutes & percussion on this killer slice of midtempo funk from africa via berlin. this has been thoroughly road tested by soft rocks at their kinfolk night & never fails to get a great response from the dancefloor. side b. don t worry it s not the tantric one s ode to voyeurism but a rare as hens teeth slice of uk. reggae at is s finest. adjustments have been made sensitively and sounds have been chosen to carefully match those from the appropriate era. a perfect track for blissful summer evenings (yeah whatever!).

last year moscow records set up sub-label moss co and each release so far has introduced a new set of artists. for this third release it is nu zau, aka stefan gabriel zamfir and loopdeville, aka d zlatinov. nu zau debuted on fear of flying in 2012 and his 2013 was prolific with seven releases added to his name. he provides an 11-minute drum track, *cumse cuvine*, that is filled with kooky and super minimal, squeaks, tweets and vocal samples, a fine production. loopdevilles kick drum on *piance* in comparison to zaus a-side is standout, and here he provides a cold and moody track designed for those deeper moments of the night. it is the london-based producers third release after debuting in 2013 with two 12 inches, one of which, phantasmagoria, inaugurated new label delooped.

summer is in full effect, and even as we enjoy the warm breeze and the occasional boat party, we never quit hunting for fresh music. this time, with a perfect ep for those who enjoy their dose of soul and funky rhythms.

steve frisco, of serie limitee fame, brings us the latest bundle of hot tracks to hit wax classic in 2014. as the title suggests, steve takes us on a journey through low fidelity sounds and production techniques. think dark, moody, yet crunchy basement house tracks with inspiration taken from all over the u.s and the rest of the house world. it’s a generous offering as well. six whole dusty tunes for those diggers who are looking for something with a bit more range than another record of generic piano laden, house-by-numbers pieces that still seem to be flooding the record store shelves in 2014. the moods do vary from track to track, but they remain very reflective and almost melancholic at points. the title track, ‘adventure in lo-fi’, is the deepest of the lot with filtered chords, echoing claps and a sporadic kick pattern that often clears way for the track’s bass hits. now, compare that to ‘da brooklyn beat’. whilst the former had a distinct sunrise/sunset kind of feel to it, the latter is definitely more of a club affair. skippy snare hits and a strong organ lead the track on, and at the risk of utilizing very overused buzzwords such as ‘raw’ and ‘ruff’, this track, and the rest of the a-side for that matter, certainly captures that essence. stalwart wax classic fans will no doubt be picking this one up to add to their collection. however, i strongly recommend this ep as a jumping in point to the label for any newcomers out there

new york endless is the first appearance on vinyl of new jersey born new yorker dan selzer. you may not have heard of him, but many of your favourite producers, bands and djs massively respect his record collection and ear. many of the sounds he has spent years exploring and djing can be heard via the three tracks that make up the strategies ep. elements of techno and house, idm, italo-disco and new wave, cosmic and kosmiche, krautrock and a certain debt to the new york school of minimalist composers all appear. the music is pure and (mostly) analog while still centred around accessible melodies and clean synthesized tones. golf channel every time!

the classic song of the siren is yet another sublime piece of deepest nyc house music from the legendary ronald burrell under his aphrodisiac alias. a stone cold nu-groove classic from 1990, this record has always been a firm favourite with discerning house heads & those in search of a more sublime groove. here, re-mastered & re-issued in its original form, song of the siren is a must have piece. a mysterious, melodic journey that transcends time, sounds fresh & works perfectly no matter how late or how early it is on the dance-floor.

accompany the reissue of woo s into the heart of love, emotional rescue is releasing a limited 7inch featuring songs not included on the vinyl pressing, plus a previously unreleased version of the beautiful title song, which only appeared in later form on their cd only, la luna album. with the original into the heart of love album only appearing as a 60 minute cassette-only release, several of the albums songs could not make the first time vinyl issue from emotional rescue. therefore, this limited edition 7inch includes two of those ommited songs. the wistful english folk duet between mark ives and sue amor on make me tea and it s sibling on the album, a little long way. possibly woo s most straight forward folk song, make me tea is as the title imagines a very particular english poem. recording as a duet between two late night lovers, awaking from post-love making slumber to find peace and with it, a nice, perfect cup of tea. however, it is the inclusion of the unreleased version of the title song, magic in the dark that is worth the admission price alone. taken from the cd only album, la luna, the original s short and gentle story of late night love is presented here in it s alternate demo form. a different vantage point is shown in revelation and then exhaltation. the sadder start expands in to a beautiful and wonderus folk celebration. mark s vocals and guitar are later joined by gentle rhythmic percussion from brother clive, before clarinets duet to a yearning finale. woo once again showing their unique mix of folk and new age electronics. a one off to cherish.

if you re going to beat em down, you need the right tools. on the label s second release, grimy trax has given you a couple hammers. the a-side, dejay cease s the fixer is straight chicago. we re talking banging 909 funk that might be found buried on a particularly unhinged ron hardy mix. a simple bass line and two notes of acid are all it takes to make the floor go wild. this is functional heat with enough atmosphere to engage the mind, body and soul. on the b-side, rising chicago son boogienite proves he s earned the hype. boy, ok is an instant classic thanks to some recognizable disco strings and a funky escalator of a bassline. the producer uses a trippy, rubberband synth which eventually turns into rhythmic, teasing vocal. the mixdown is ridiculous, especially as the lengthy track passes the halfway mark. boogie brings the bassline in and out in between beautiful ambient rhodes and a call and response male and female vocal. those strings hit again and you feel no pain.

nsm002 is me, mosca, again. two not-house not-techno tracks, a little more raw and textured than my last 12inch but with the same emphasis on dark, sexy grooves and just enough dissonance and freakiness. the greyhounds is a dubby rolling thing with an indulgent breakdown that i wondered about scrapping. i ended up backing myself because the crowds i played it to seemed happy, and ive wanted to use those strings for eleven years now. i tried to make clinical trial for the basement clubs, dust and metal and tape. thanks for checking it out.

make no mistake, for vault series 15 the doors have been flung open to welcome a new act to the fold. theres very little known about mistake made. no records or releases exist to date, but they have impressed vault chief subjected enough to have them join the sequestered berlin-based crew. and in sublime compliance with the vault series creed, this debut effort from the shadowy outfit presents yet another set of functioning and frill-free dancefloor material, complete with a rusted-through hue of its own. on the a-side >wrist< jumps straight in with marching intent, complete with fidgety hat work thats both anxious and infectious. then on the flip, >ricochet< opens with field recordings tossed into a stormy concoction of ticks, hats and fuzzy atmospherics, teamed up here with one of those basslines that will keep you glued to the floor. >indec< then concludes in signature vault series style an ominous, growling number rattled with alarm bells and screeching, clangorous detail. its one of those monstrous slow-burners that leaves you wounded yet longing for more. all in all, a rounded first release from a new techno tour de force. this isnt the last we will be hearing from mistake made.

david k is the parisian-turned-berliner producer who has been a prominent artist within the underground house scene since the late 90s, having first joined forces with dan ghenacia of apollonia when releasing his bestseller * boul de nerf* on freak n chic. a fruitful career in production led to music on labels like cocoon, visionquest, supplement facts and bpitch control, while his new album * out of range * is just about to drop. ten years in the making and signed to tiefschwarzs souvenir, david proves his music is still as relevant today as ever. as one of the main artists on freak n chic, david k seemed a natural fit for apollonia to approach...* david is an old friend and talented produced who we have known from the beginning back in paris. of course we wanted to see what he could do for the new label, as you know by now we apollonia are always referring back to our roots. a 2-track package, * middle-aged romance* is characterised by its bell melody and hard-hitting bassline, an electric story moving between ethereal wonder and an intense workout. * drop the beat* perfectly demonstrates the classic chicago house style david k and apollonia first enjoyed together all those years ago, but adding a very modern, textured touch. coming 2014, apollonia invite premiesku to the label – the combination of livio & roby and their pal george g – and also the newest addition to the lola ed roster.

killer debut album from jared wilson on his own label 7777. wilson states the album draws inspiration from the literal underclass. ghost miners is influenced and dedicated to all those who have worked and lived underground, from gold miners in south africa, copper miners in the 1800s in northern michigan, the mole people of nyc to orphans living under bucharest. raw acid and techno of the highest caliber as only jared wilson can do!

the supremely talent william burnett makes a belated return to emotional response, and this time he s got brooklyn-based studio pal john beall in tow. those who enjoyed the duo s release on the l.i.e.s. white label series should lap up shimmer. it hits hard from the off, with -snaker charmer- delivering a velvet-clad punch to the guts. it s techno right from the top drawer, with darting electronics and drawn out pads riding a thunderous groove. the title track is impressive, too, with surging electronics and throbbing synths riding a techno-tempo groove crafted out of an old hardcore breakbeat. there s some more considered fare on offer, too, with the shimmering ambience of -hold me take me leave me- completing a superb package.
