one of the most important harmony groups in the entirety of jamaican music, the paragons have a long and complicated history. first formed in the ska years by bob andy and tyrone evans as the duo of andy and ronnie, the group soon expanded to a quartet through the addition of howard barrett and john holt, the latter naturally assuming lead duties, following the subsequent departure of andy, holt, evans and barrett made the paragons the quintessential rock steady trio. they had an incredible run of hits for duke reid and coxsone during the mid-to-late �60s, and also issued some self-produced work, before holt�s solo career skyrocketed, leaving the group on the back-burner. then, in the mid-1970s, the paragons reformed, cutting material for new york-based labels such as clocktower and clintones, which led to this intriguing album, which saw material recorded in jamaica at harry j for bunny lee mixed with work cut at bullwackie�s studio in the bronx, along with re-workings of classics such as �left with a broken heart� and �memories by the score� is a whole range of new material, dealing with contemporary themes.

2021 repress!!! x-ray records catalogue is as under the radar as it is rich and ahead of its time. releasing between 1992 and 1994, most of the label s outputs were produced by raymond castoldi. although people primarily know castoldi for being the music director and organist in madison square garden, he also has a lesser known chapter of his life. in the early 1990s, raymond released 6 eps on his imprint x-ray records. by coupling his musical education with a four-on-the-floor club pattern, castoldi managed to create a jazzy vibe with spaceous sounds and keyboard jams, all coalescing into a relaxing atmosphere that would eventually become the signature sound of 90 s deep house. in partnership with castoldi, kalahari oyster cult delivers the goods once again: 11 tracks from the x-ray catalogue over a 3lp for your deejaying pleasure.

rare record from kaka recorded in portugal and arrangements by the virtuose paulino vieira. last track on this l.p. is a funana track from the legendary bulimundo band. limited warehouse find, these records have been remaining for years in original boxes straight from the press plant, never played mint condition.

following the �frequency vs atkins � mind merge lp� (march 2017), featuring the collaboration between orlando voorn and juan atkins, italian label out-er (out electronic recordings) welcomes long standing detroit producer terrence dixon for a 21 track triple vinyl pack �12.000 miles of twilight�, out in july 2017. this is dixon�s fifth album and follows his last �badge of honor� released back in 2013. the legend has been putting out material since the mid -nineties. recognized worldwide for his visionary, futuristic sound, dixon unites ages of inspiration traversing diverse musical styles including electro, jazz and minimal sci-fi techno. this overall hypnotic approach can also be seen in his parallel project population one, which appeared on out-er respectively in early 2016 with two-tracker solo �temporary insanity ep�, as well as in late 2016 with �temporary insanity remixes� which saw the label offering reinterpretations from cosmin trg, pangaea, voiski and label co-founder simone gatto. �12.000 miles of twilight� remains an experimental techno asset offering a non-linear, emotionally absorbing journey into the singular experimental edge of the detroit artist, pulling the listener in all kind of directions from the opening track to the closing finale.

following the success of �ride� with miss kittin, eminent sci+tec founder dubfire returns with another chaos-conjuring techno composition. previously the sole-preserve of his epic sense-blurring hybrid show, dubfire is finally unleashing �dust devil�� his first solo release in several years, �dust devil� is all about precision momentum. a move that dubfire�s made his signature, you can physically feel movement and destination throughout. especially as we reach the short breakdown where the riff revolves faster and higher, providing space for the echoed stabs that whirl and twist around you intensely. as the drums re-ignite, the riff is suddenly converted into groove energy as the jack-minded persistence brings the elements back together with pure focus. this is what ali has to say� �this was an instrumental i had done that i wasn�t quite sure what to do with. it wasn�t strong enough for a lead single and it always felt as though there was something missing, perhaps a spoken or sung vocal. so i sort of put it out of my mind until it was time to compile the music for the hybrid show back in the summer of 2013. once i had the backbone of the set list, along with the visual look, there seemed to be a more defined mood and look. and when i happened upon this track again it seemed to have been tailor-made for this show. it was also nice to insert something no one had heard before to break things up a bit.

say you love me wasn�t �om� alec khaoli�s first solo recording but the 1985 ep solidified the bass player and songwriter�s standing as one of south africa�s most consistently innovative pop auteurs. he built a career on ubiquitous rock, pop and soul hits with groundbreaking bands like the beaters, harari and umoja. but khaoli�s seemingly endless fountain of music continued outside these ensembles, where he usually played bass and contributed songwriting and vocals.

torn is a new face to the samurai camp and our first signing from russia. a st petersburg native, torn has been developing over recent years into one of the most interesting producers in the half step community with his tracks featuring heavily in the sets of many of the scenes most prominent dj�s including homemade weapons, loxy, clarity & presha.
the grethen ep is a gateway to the torn sound. �stagnation� is the most traditional drum and bass of the ep with it�s bouncing, grunting lurch. �grethen� goes down low and deep, while �self reflection� is the tune bound to populate many dj sets with it�s tribal percussion. �insomnia� ups the intensity with frantic, restless energy to close the ep. more torn music to come on samurai later in 2017.
