church label boss seb wildblood continues his catalogue with sw004. the release follows wildblood’s much sought after cassette from earlier this year (sw004) which featured three of the four tracks on the record, whilst the new addition doesn’t deviate far from the sw playbook. ‘every body looks good at the restaurant’ offers up meandering sax melodies, warm jazzy pads & soft percussive layers amidst an intriguing monologue.

the mythical transdance from uk duo night moves is given a much needed official repress by domestica records and the barcelona label have spared no expense. a limited pressing of 400 10-s come housed in hand screen printed sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. despite the paucity of night moves discography, it s clear the duo of michael guihen and john davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. transdance was originally released as a limited 12- white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of europe and new york city yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. original copies of the gc1 pressing of transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on discogs so kudos to domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut -life up- on the flip.

with jealous god, eerie and l.i.e.s on his c.v. they don t come much more approved that domenico crisci, but few would be prepared for the onslaught that leaps out of this first release on summa cum laude. the violinist champions distortion as a weapon, running everything through a fuzz pedal in a most unrelenting of fashions. its certainly not for the feint-hearted, and all the more powerful with it. meanwhile return would sound brutal in any other context were it not for what came before, all slamming, grubby drums and the noises that splay off them. blacklord them manages to push the vibe further back into the red with a searing throwdown to finish the ep off in a masterful display of intensity.

veil of light is the synth/postpunk solo project of a mystery man from zurich known to the wider world only as m. the project was born in 2012 when all the tracks for the veil of light eponymous 2013 ep released on belaten were recorded by m in a bunker near zurich. that last fact incidentally is a good way to describe the music released under this project’s name much like the mental image of a bunker it is cold dark and forces one into a contemplative resigned state. the influences that immediately come to mind listening to veil of light are 1980’s wave music post punk industrial and dark ambient all weaved together by an overarching depressive yet dreamy atmosphere. it has been called gothgaze and the description seems apt. the followup to the opener the 7” cold skin single released on edition gris and the debut lp simply titled as well as this years head/blood/chest ep continue in the same vein.

over the last few years, dutch electronic misfit vc-118a has delivered a number of killer eps and 12inch singles, each packed with sharp-edged electro, spacey techno, and industrial-strength analogue house. shift regsiter is his second full-length excursion his debut, international airlines, appeared on lunar disko back in 2012 and offers an expansive and hugely atmospheric journey through his trademark sound. naturally, there s much to admire across the 14 tracks, from the woozy, spaced-out electro-dub of input mode and the sparkling idm of serial data transmission, to the ultra-deep throb of radiation curve, and the hard-wired dancefloor bounce of the drexciya-like apex

its the music of the space that extends between oceans and mountain slopes. its the music of the space that is much bigger and much more adventurous than the four walls of a club look like. its the latest record on acker, and it orbits around a song from il civetto. the band from berlin is a wonderfully multicultural bunch. their sound is reminiscent of gypsy, folk or swing, but at the same time it doesnt really fit any of these labels. liberté ana is a perfect example. monolink turns this track into a groovy downbeat tune that vibrates much higher than its low bpm count - the perfect soundtrack for laid-back afternoons or afterhours. pophop does what he does best: party. however, between the catchy bassline and the tight percussions of his remix theres still a lot of space for the soul of liberté ana. umami goes even further and creates an ecstatic banger that has everything it takes to be played during the prime time on the dance floor.

argot excavates an unexplored corner of chicago house history. lab work 91-96 collects the work of chris ike and john kardaras, two chicago producers with few records to their names but a wealth of compelling unreleased material waiting in their archives. the compilation highlights the pair’s particular vision and musical breadth across 14 tracks, drawn from a cd-r given to steve mizek in 2010 that was recently rediscovered. lab work was remastered in it’s entirety by dietrich schoenemann, sounding much at home today yet intimately connected to a formative time in chicago house history.

it s a first for pinkman and lux rec. yet the two labels have so much in common that it isn t surprising they have been drawn towards each other. and the rosa luxembourg files is the result of this collaboration. rotterdam and zurich, ian martin and barbir & nicola kazimir, exploring different shades of the same black, wandering at the fringes, plunging into obscurity and machines talk. there s no rest and no comfort, but manic fixation.

increasingly known for his productions as much as his storied dj sets, eric cloutier approaches the studio with the same kind of precision that marks out his club and festival appearances. on this first release on palinoia he exercises a keen sense of control over playful elements, not least on lead track -heuristic-. the nagging lead synth may hop around the mix, but it stays locked on to a thoroughly focused undercarriage of drums and low end that suits the professional techno set. -ipseity- is lighter in its demeanour thanks to some calming pad tones, but the strong structure of the track remains. the release rounds up with the slower thump of -opprobrium-, surmising cloutier s attitude to the warm-up part of a serious, long-lasting dj set.

san fran-based artist, tape_hiss releases his second ep on love notes and you can clearly hear both his sound and the label s maturing in tandem. moving on from the depth of his first record, love is a dog from hell, tape_hiss takes things into headier waters, going heavy on the acid and the rugged basslines on this 4 track ep. angelian war storm begins in exactly that fashion, with 303s squelching and bassbins rattling. this continues through the clear standout trackout, the vivian girls. the gears shift a bit on the b1 where sistrum boss, patrice scott is allowed to rework the vivian girls and does so in a warbly, dirty jazz fashion. tape_hiss then closes things out with the title track, realms of the unreal, which uses an appropriate sample annoucing, “this is me, yo. right here”, and it does very much sound to us like this budding artist is annoucing himself to the world in a most proper fashion. we can’t wait to hear what comes next from both artist and label.

john tejada and arian leviste are back on areal after their much celebrated release “reactance“. these guys are working for 25 years together meeting up weekly in the studio to try new things. they say themselves that it is their longest and most special collaboration. they use mainly hardware with an old school mind set that comes more from the early 80s nyc hip hop culture than anything else. early pioneers misusing gear and making the best of their limitations. their newest release “hysteresis“ comes along strongly functional for the club.

mystery, poetry, a play of masks: artistic creation according to john cravache. his collaboration with versatile dates back to the beginning of the millennium. a childhood friend of i:cube, he is 44 years old, lives in a paris suburb, and is not a professional artist. getting involved in writing, he has been boasting his artistic and economic independence and his crafty attitude outside of the industrial system. he gave himself time to invent a personal world, wild and funny, which eventually gave birth to the album -cités nomades-. even though his influences are quite varied and avant-garde (magma, captain beefheart, tom waits), they did not really affect this unclassifiable project. poetry and mystery come before all, because john cravache is appearing masked. john cravache and nicolas chaix (i:cube) have recorded radio creations since the early 90s, in particular for chimère fm in paris, as well as numerous long improvised music sessions. at the approach of the millennium, they embarked on the creation of an album that was not completed until sixteen (!) years later. john is a poet, accomplished pianist, and registered truck driver and nicolas, a self-taught musician, have both made the realisation of -cités nomades- possible. this is not an ironic pop album, this album is simply all you want. listening will do you much good

Æ is the third part of bjarki triptych of lps to be released this year. Æ is a particularly icelandic form, pronounced “i” in english, bjarki thinks it just looks good. here it is a selection of music that is at its core quite simple, with restrained instrumentation, made on hardware and features a selection of older works and the most recent produced just weeks ago. bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dance floor tracks he doesn’t seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrates very well. his music is at times cinematic and there’s a story behind each track. bjarki’s music always has something to do with him personally, but he’d rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcode s commitment to releasing the scene s most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. with releases last year from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, luigi madonna, jel ford, dubspeeka and mark reeve, the label continues on in 2016 in much the same way, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community.

going back to classics could fall so easily, luckily for skudge presents, the persistent and class-act of mark broom leaves the mediocre in its rubble. eric cloutier: broom is a legend. i can t even count how many of his records i own. both of these are pure fire loving it! the kicking a-side, moments1, with the high paced energy and flirtations with the dutch classic style of techno-house crossover brings a smile upon djs and dancers alike - without going too much into nostalgia, this track is sure to find its way through the peak times. moments2 on the flip submerges deeper into this records vibe, with a progression that throbs more than kicks, with a saw tooth lead that keeps the moody atmosphere intact. a sure-shot 2 tracker is what we need and what we get

techno duo slam present a brand new artist album “machine cut noise”. with the double vinyl album, machine cut noise, stuart mcmillan & orde meikle delve into the everyday workings of what makes us human, with life, so to speak, running at the very heart of album. much of their time is spent on the road, therefore, many of the original ideas for the album were created in airports, hotels and where ever the two found themselves inspired around the world. this created a vibe that each track was born of the modern machine itself.

one more time we choose two little known gems for re-release on 45 rpm single. another single by the same group is pretty in demand by funk 45 collectors. these two sides are not that much known but they certainly deserve the same attention. while funky you is pretty good, uptempo funk, the b-side is the real beauty of this record. love come down is a fine example of chicago soul which has not been re-released yet. hopefully many people appreciate the work behind this release, from both the original musicians as well as those who are responsible for this high quality re-issue.

the turbo debut from gilmer galibard is a collection of four dark, visceral techno floor-destroyers from a young canary islands-based producer about whom we know relatively little. it also marks the labels first release to feature a swear in the title, offering a foreboding glimpse of the paranoid machine-driven warehouse terror contained within. by now you will have heard the demo in its entirety and are still dancing whether you want to or not. for my purposes, you will use the search engine optimization terms dark, visceral, techno, floor-destroyers and paranoid machine-driven warehouse terror to ensure that it finds its way to the 83 people who need to hear the release through this specific channel. you may tell people i am 26 years old and from the canary islands both facts are true and sound comforting enough but as you now know this does not matter. print this in its entirety and leave the release title unchanged. i would say ive said too much but that is impossible because as youve come to understand all of this has already happened.

my cube is cube’s first vinyl lp and it is a multifaceted, kaleidoscopic listen, containing a multitude of moods and atmospheres. it sounds like the west coast’s answer to container, and will appeal to fans of aussie synth-punks total control just as much as it will to fans of regis, silent servant, and their seminal downwards record label.

despite the renewed interest in music from kenyas past, finding these tracks and their rights holders hasnt become any easier. only a handful of music archives around the world harbour collections of kenyan music, and just a few private collectors in kenya and abroad have been sharing catalogue info online or privately. one of the problems with east african music of this era is that much of it was originally released only on 45 rpm, seven-inch vinyl singles, many of which were only ever produced in tiny runs of a few hundred. 45s with their thin, paper sleeves do not age as well as lps and are often far more susceptible to the elements

jake one’s discography reads like a who’s who list of some of the greatest and most successful artists in the history of hip hop. that’s what makes him truly unique. blurring the lines between the underground and overground. providing sonic backdrops for such incredible emcees as de la soul, scarface, freeway, mf doom, evidence, casual, elzhi, brother ali, and rakim among others, but polishing that same formula and providing records for the likes of drake, rick ross, t.i., 50 cent, snoop dogg, j cole, wale, dom kennedy, and royce 5’9”, jake one is one of the exceptions that has worked equally with both of these sides of the industry. exceptionally. “prayer hands”, a collection of instrumentals created from gospel sources, includes some of those recordings amongst others that all remind you that jake one has pretty much become the go-to producer for any major artist that wants some real hip hop shit on their album. and understandably so.
