august 2016 saw running back release a first volume of live tracks from redshape, but january 2017 sees the much loved artist return to delsin, his most regard label, for a second offering of the same. this time the ep has one track made in paris, and one in london, and both are filled with the sort of beautifully bleak and lo-fi sounds that have made this man such a standout artist over the years. up first is london, a chugging track that builds in pressurised layers of coarse hi hats, gurgling bass and pinging kick drums. it is a hypnotic groove that teases you as elements drop in and out and hisses of static and broken little guitar riffs add some cheeky funk. on the flip-side, paris is much more playful, with colourful pixelated melodies dancing about the mix, industrial drums working down low and steppy synths fleshing things out. overall it sounds like a future disco for inebriated robots and is one of redshape s more party starting tracks.

experienced crate diggers are no doubt familiar with new birth, the 17-piece funk ensemble sampled on classic hip-hop records by wu-tang clan, de la soul, junior m.a.f.i.a., black sheep, lil wayne, ice cube, and many more. the genesis of new birth can be traced back to the nite-liters, a louisville-based instrumental outfit. founded in 1963 by motown songwriter/producer harvey fuqua and saxophonist tony churchill, the nite-liters released a handful of albums in the early 70s, scoring a few minor hits and perfecting the sound that would power new birth to further success as the decade progressed. while much of the the nite liters’ early material has been overlooked, their self-titled debut album is worth revisiting. originally released on rca records in 1970, the nite liters is a raw, soulful masterpiece that has been sampled by kmd, ghostface killah and others.

mculo, aka dan schey, is a producer and dj originally hailing from london but now residing in berlin. over the last 2 years he has been cultiviting his own roots by the oder imprint on which he released his bunzlau tape ep and his i caught a glance ep which was out this summer, as well as regular appearances on the likes of kmah radio and nts. he is also a frequent dj in berlin alongside the likes of close affiliates chaos in the cbd and youandewan. this is the follow up to his dreamy i caught a glance ep. its a far darker record than his previous releases, focussing much more on the dancefloor. it s been a regular feature in mia dora s dj sets for the last 12 months.

rare brazil album made available again through mr bongo, incl. voce abuso & kabaluere. nice! a truly fantastic record that sounds the way it looks – psychedelic rock, samba-funk and tripped out mpb. features kabaluere as sampled by marcelo d2 on his hit qual e. arranged by rogerio duprat, featuring legendary guitarist lanny gordin. antonio carlos & jocafi were a very successful and famous brazilian writing duo, born in bahia. they worked with the likes of wilson simonal, rosinha de valença, trio mocotó, milton banana, toquinho and more. originally released on rca brazil in 1971, this was the duos debut lp. two versions of the album cover exist in brazil – this, the psyched-out, burnt out version, and a much less exciting photograph of the chaps, pressed to include the single desacato which became a popular hit in brazil and several european countries.

groove line records follows up the change remix 12” from the summer with the latest instalment of our officially licensed disco remix 12”s. next up are two exceptional disco remixes of the salsoul orchestra classics, “tale of three cities” and “tangerine”, by mike maurro, whose recent the mike maurro peak hour remixes box set has cemented the new york producer’s reputation as one of the most respected disco remixers on the scene right now. side a features “tale of three cities” (mike maurro disco remix), one of the salsoul orchestra’s funkiest cuts, written by bass player ron baker for their debut lp. maurro extends the arrangement to nine minutes, concentrating on the driving beat and rhythm section for the intro, subtly adding the guitar and keyboard parts before the first orchestral bridge at 1m36. stripping back much of the orchestral elements throughout the mix he gives more space to the deftly executed solo guitar and keyboard passages and gives special attention to vincent montana’s vibes, taking the dancer on a beautiful journey through the salsoul sound concluding with an instrumental, ethereal outro. side aa features “tangerine” (mike maurro disco remix), vincent montana’s skillfully rearranged version of the lilting jimmy dorsey pop standard which was the group’s biggest pop hit, also from their debut lp.

back in the days at the west-saxon highlands there was a missile, which marked the starting point. when credit 00 saw the legendary rocket rise on tetris’ final screen, it was the first time he became aware of electronic music at all. since then it actually hasn’t changed that much. he keeps pushing that buttons that belong to the impressive pool of music machines towered up next to his bed. after moving to dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of dresden’s club-canalisation. he quickly made himself a name as a dj, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. as a part of the idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. this led to “robo dance”, dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best electro club night featuring guests like dmx krew, luke eargoogle or imatran voima. the track credit made with randy barracuda of imatran voima has probably been created some time after the show. apparently, randy was not in good shape anymore and so “lebensraum” unmistakably bears credit’s hallmarks. for his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. after all, he loves synth wave, electro, afro, kraut, kosmische, disco, italo, miami bass and other proto stuff – a lot of machine music.

the kurl project started in the summer of 2014 where the primary concept was to sonically encompass the various influences of a twenty-year musical journey. the essence of kurls sound is mainly deep dub with hints of house groove that create a very unique sound environment connecting the listener to his lifestyle and movement. at the root of “sacred fire” is a very special love story. kurl started an emotional partnership, a genuine brotherhood with mj white, one of the pioneers of the soulful house music sound of the new york ’90s. marshall james white appeared on many hits in the nyc club scene including scandalous still irresistible just to name one. he tragically passed away in november 2015. mj white gives soul to sacred fire by writing the lyrics and interpreting it with so much passion that kurl was able to transform this track into an eternal love song. for kurl, mj white will remain the angel with a heavenly voice, and above all, a memory that will mark his internal and musical journey for the rest of his days in the words of mj white music has a huge heart that beats inside all of us.

analysis of time casts an almighty spell over the universe with the analysis of time ep on too many squares. infectious cosmic disco vibes that conjure up visions of a future world as much as they do classic 80s sc-fi movies.

the duo gravity disturbance opens with the first reference of his newly founded label ritual waves, where they intend to worship the electronics from his serious, dark and hypnotic perspective. his first proposal “unsynchronized movement” has three tracks created in 2014 (the year in which this formation is born) and representing the mutation that has been his personal vision of techno, without renouncing its essence purely underground. gravity disturbance finds its place in the production and makes the leap to the scene, where they have much to contribute.

brand new, rambunctious, rootsy, spiritual brass-band music from lagos, with singing, drums and home-made percussion. obadikah is a group of old friends who play together in the cherubim & seraphim and baptist churches of the ikeja and isale eko districts. a couple of them were founder-members of the eko brass band, they’ve played with pretty much all the key nigerian reggae artists. the tunes are mostly traditional yoruban melodies, often sung at bed-time. the songs are mostly original, sung in yoruba (though jomido is an egun song from the badagry area of lagos state).

2011 is set to be a huge year for yousef, and arguably his strongest yet in the production field. after spending much of 2010 recording remixes and productions for other leading labels yousef has come back super-strong on his own seminal circus recordings proven here if needed by his latest vinyl production. it is centered on a very simple premise. taking 2 pieces of music and recreating them with yousefs indiscernibly brilliant club night in mind. a resolutely dance floor-focused ep, that combine to create a unique aural tapestry representative of the circus and yousefs own musical evolution. each is an intricate and heartfelt paean of love to circus and the huge impact it has had on both clubland and yousefs career for the last almost nine years, with the clubs birthday approaching this september. yousef says that, >the ep is a special project for me and one that is indicative of the way im progressing. getting to re-shape these tracks from some of my most respected peers has been a great opportunity to craft them with that special circus sound<

jamie roberts is no stranger to the more experimental tenets of the techno genre, and much of the british artist’s output of late has hinted at more leftfield leanings. a recent return to will bankhead’s trilogy tapes imprint saw a brace of meditative, post-detroit workouts - employing the same heady, hardware aesthetic as much of his work on ternesc - though at a drastically reduced tempo. it’s this same willingness to break down perceptions regarding his own music that marks walk type – roberts’ debut on the avian label, as a notable chapter in the artist’s discography.

matt whitehead makes his debut on super rhythm trax, giving us ‘crosstalk’, ‘seeing red’ and ‘birdland’ channeling classic detroit and chicago house/techno that’s heavy on the analogue and all recorded down to tape for extra warmth. make sure you don’t miss matt’s electro opus, ‘we’re bombing’, a love letter to the 80’s street sounds that have influenced much of his catalogue to date. then as a special treat for ‘a is for acid’ lovers, we have the raw 303 workout in all it’s solo glory so you can ‘make your own’.

ltd 20216 repress ! italian producers steve murphy and dj octopus are regular collaborators, and earlier this year released an excellent split ep on chiwax. here, they return to the much adored german imprint with a proper collaborative four-tracker. theres much to admire, from the rush-inducing bounce of opener track 1 and mr lee-ish cheekiness of track 2 (check the 89 style riff, snappy drum machine groove and cut-up vocal samples), to the impeccable depth and sun-drenched warmth of the decidedly wide-eyed track 3. arguably best of all, though, is track 4, which reimagines sir james 1990 strictly rhythm classic special as an immersive chicago deep house jam.

over the last decade, bantam lions (aka liverpool producer mike carney) has devoted much of his spare time to “playful experimentation,” channeling 30 years of musical inspirations and adventures to create electronic music that sits somewhere between hazy nostalgia and far-sighted futurism. now, he’s gathered together some of his favourite moments to create short stories, a debut album – and scenery’s first long-form release – simply overflowing with page-turning musical narratives.

much may have changed over a two-decade period, but drumcodes commitment to releasing the scenes most cutting-edge and refined techno remains resolute. with releases last year from heavy hitters such as adam beyer, alan fitzpatrick, luigi madonna, jel ford, dubspeeka and mark reeve, the label continues on in 2016 in much the same way, bringing fail-safe, club-ready music to the techno community.

alma vox is an eccentric parisian combo, they gave us this little 7-inch without much explanation, and we were instantly drawn by its hazy poetical pop appeal. the a side covers the famous french 80 s song ‘toi mon toit , by elli medeiros, adding a sensual neurasthenic disco twist, yet danceable and fun. theme ii on the b-side, has a mid-tempo reggae/funk mood combined with some ecstatic emotional chords. perfect for a cliché-freemediterranean sunset, this tune has already worked wonders on various discerning dance floors. both tracks have been mixed by i:cube, who added his unique sound to great effect.

moscow records close 2016 with a fantastic 3-track ep from berlin imports roustam and tolga fidan. this being their first outing together, the pair deliver a high quality, intelligent journey through minimal house and techno. the record opens with brodsky beat, a groovy, dance floor-focused track. lively percussion and tight bass communicate perfectly with the hope-filled lead to build tension throughout. the omega variant on the a2 has a much more abstract feel. broken beats and skippy percussion play back and forth with deep, spacey hooks and a peculiar synth, giving the listener a sense of mystery. finally, growing up is just a phase is a calming 14 minute trip that uses the entirety of the b side to tell a story of reassurance and calm. laid-back rhythms, guitar samples, relaxed vocals and a wandering synth line work together to form the perfect warmup track.

father & son records and tapes have already had a strong 2016 with releases from naphta, dj sajko and das komplex, and now the polish label rounds off the year with a stunning album of style-spanning wares from niemoc. paramaribo is the first physical release for the emergent artist, and it sports all manner of instrumentation feeding into a wholesome, heartwarming whole. there s a danceable pulse propelling these tracks, and the likes of -lustro- head more overtly into club territory, but by and large this is an album of plaintive melodics to tug at the heart as much as the fee
