one of our specialties at jazzman is focusing in on the obscure and often previously slept on regional based sounds across america. this time our radar was honing in on state of virginia and its norfolk sound. many celebrated musicians have contributed to the norfolk sound, but lenis guess was probably the most active, prolific and influential showman of the soulful 60s and 70s. this collection of unique recordings captures the essence of the multi-talented entertainer, singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, band manager and label owner a calm, cool and collected quintessential music man about town.

deadbeats dub credentials are by this point are as solid as they come, and being asked to remix 2 of the genres heaviest hitters, not once, but twice is just about the greatest complement anyone in said position could ever hope to receive.

polymath james leyland kirby must surely have one of the most confounding cvs in the business: he spent years taking the piss out of the music industry with anthems rallying against the (vv)mcps, he notoriously fell out with various well known record labels for reasons you ll just have to google, goaded aphex twin with a series of tributes and channelled his love of everything from falco (rock me amadeus), chris de burgh, frankie goes to hollywood and stockport karaoke nights into a stream of increasingly bizzare 7 s back in the early noughties. but at the same time he was responsible for releasing some of the very earliest material from boards of canada (hell interface: 1997), made a ruck of frankly groundbreaking industrial electronic records, brought new beat to the worlds attention and, in 1999, made his first album as the caretaker, a project that would go on to release some of the most loved ambient/ lynchian albums of recent times.

the kicks started as a collective of different musicians, electronic & instrumentalists, that gathered together under one roof just for the fun of it, coming together and jamming at their own expense. a jam is a jam. theres no aim, no target. it is free from expectations and just like that the tapes piled up with no specific style or genre lines. whatever happens, happens is pretty much the attitude that created a label, not out of necessity but out of convenience of being free to release the more outstanding cuts recorded, regardless of their personal definition. the first release is from the curators and creators of the project, maayan nidam & alex picone. the record starts with the psychedelic tone of alice in the desert, continues to a still hypnotic yet down to earth 020 and ends with the stabbing butt shaker think about it. the next releases will continue featuring picone & nidam, joined by cool cats like aquarius heaven, san proper & cesar merveille.

fleetwood mac is a band with many faces. in contrast to their poppy sound of the 70s, fleetwood mac actually started out in the sixties as a psychedelic blues band under guitarist peter greens lead.
pious bird of good omen was originally released in 1969 as a compilation of the bands bluesy roots: their first four uk singles and their b-sides and two tracks by bluesman eddie boyd with fleetwood mac backing. the albums sound is laidback, down & very dirty, featuring scorching cover versions of little willie johns >need your love so bad< and robert johnsons >i believe my time aint long<. the b-side features the international hit single >albatross< and peter greens composition >black magic woman<, the latter being popularized by santanas version in 1970. this album is a must-have for blues fans. anyone interested in the roots of fleetwood mac might discover they are essentially a totally different band than one might think.

in september 2010, blame one hit j57 up via twitter when he heard that the legendary nyc record store and hip-hop cultural icon fat beats was closing its doors, knowing that is where j57 worked, to tell him he was sorry to hear the sad news. they immediately clicked and linked up for a project. fast-forward to 2013 and they give you the *walk in the sun* lp.

cardiff massive giovanni branciamore and bradley albertides heard nicoles amazing sultry folky tones on the flowers of flesh & blood album and just had to work up some nip and bop to sit with her voice. nicole loved it and this is it! we are not too sure what to label this music under but tags of future nip hop ambient folk bop seem to be close. sarah burgess is a secret forest folky vocalist from york with a super soft ambient tone to her voice which was crying out for a touch of flyypost nip. luv*jams ambient alter ego flyypost slides out some wobbled out bass lines, floaty synths and a 68bpm raw kick drum all gliding on a bed of waves with sarahs stunning memories vocal. what style of music do we label this as? neo italo nip folk acid whop?

its often said that sequels never live up to their originals but, in this case, wed like to take a slightly different stance. the ingredients might have changed however, the recipe is still the same as we introduce the sequel that is greater than equal - supplement deux. four more slices of organically grown, 100% authentic house music from the mind of ny house icon - the nathaniel x project.

golden age thinking was previously a three part, split lp but the three tracks featured on golden age thinking were to be an additional footnote to the project before the complete lp was released as a whole package digitally in june this year. written just before martin passed away in late-2012 the tracks featured on this, the 12 release, are the sort of timeless house music the duo shared a deep love of and the decision to release them was taken by giles and martins father.

after their hot contributions for treats vol. 2, session victim prove indeed that they are on the roll with a funkafied and no holds barred ep that pays homage to their hip-hop roots. move me so starts rather simply, with just a guitar and a vocal, but you can hear a moving bassline and distant rhodes chords creeping up from the background. two minutes into the track and theres still no kick drum, although the level of excitement produced by the magnetic groove is almost unbearable. a filtered drum break finally gives way to a four to the floor beat that should turn any dancefloor into a frenetic party. the track builds with high energy, as the pounding bassline seems to be directly lifted from an early 90s hip-hop classic. the breakdown sees the vocal/guitar loop being played differently until the second part shifts gear and brings more surprises in the mix with the intro rhodes chords coming in and out.

crossing classic alleys with the eintakt 28 – another various artists compilation offering a warm summerblend of well grown techno/ house/ dub plants and vegetables. starting off with >>achim maerz<< and a harmonic drifter with just that tiny acid touch it needs here. then mr. >>dub taylor<< takes over with a wooden dancefloor spoon cooking up a decent mixture for the massive floor.on the b-side >>idealist<< reduces it to the max with the well known hits and drum bits and so fulfils his past future classic promise once more.fading out with >>pawas<< and his slight jazzy cold dubb (which is not so cold at all) and being aware it’s another proper piece in the eintakt puzzle

illusion recordings is bringing an absolute stomper from the appropriately titled ny stomp with a track called >the ny house track<. a massive track inspired by new york, jersey house music and designed to get every party rocking! ny stomp is a special project by gerd (clone/4lux) who made this track to add to his live set with no intention to release it. it was just a cut made for his live sets and done as an hommage to the early days of ny and nj house. however after playing this at a party from the illusion guys in leeds he got tortured by the guys to make him release it... and lets be honest... it would have been a shame if these cuts never made it to vinyl! one the flip side a slightly more introvert track calles >can you feel it<. on remix duty its nicholas and dj aakmael both doing an excellent job by smoothening things up and take things a bit deeper. proper house music!
