along with his rival, cornell campbell, johnny clarke was one of the most esteemed singers of the roots reggae era. having grown up next door to a popular sound system on waltham park road in western kingston, clarke s early fascination with music led him to hang out at studio one with jacob miller while still at school. he then made the rounds of talent shows with barry brown, sugar minott and the diamonds, which led to a debut recording in 1973, for the pianist glen stair, which remains unreleased. an early effort for clancy eccles, ‘god made the sea and sun,’ was not promoted properly, though ‘everyday wondering,’ for rupie edwards, impacted in britain, ‘golden snake’ for stamma houghton and a cover of smokey robinson’s ‘you really got a hold on me’ for glen brown were also false starts. the breakthrough finally came in 1975 when clarke linked with bunny lee, who had him voice the rastafari landmark ‘none shall escape the judgement’ (written by earl zero, who failed to muster a credible take), which kick-started the ‘flying cymbal’ craze. clarke’s resultant debut album, enter into his gates with praise, mixed hard-hitting rastafari devotional material with sympathetic cover versions of classics by the likes of the paragons, slim smith and delroy wilson, along with a few reggae renditions of some vintage american r&b.

alvin toffler war überwältigt. als er am morgen des 4. oktober 1988 – es war sein 60. geburtstag – mit noch etwas abwesendem blick in eine schale cornflakes starrte, glaubte er, in der oberflächenstruktur der gelblich schimmernden milch, die mit ahornsirup eine emulsion bildete und die knusperkristalle der maisflocken langsam, aber unumkehrbar immer weiter zersetzte, wie durch ein fenster in eine zeitlose dimension schauen zu können. toffler, zu jener zeit auf dem zenit seines ruhms als zukunftsforscher angelangt, war von dem blick ins extratemporäre guckloch nachhaltig verstört. in keinem seiner bücher – „future shock“ war soeben in einer weiteren auflage mit dem stolzen zusatz „more than 5 million copies in print“ auf dem buchtitel erschienen – sollte er das erlebnis jemals erwähnen. auch nach seinem tod ende juni 2016 konnten im nachlass bisher keine ausführungen zu dem vorfall gefunden werden. die von toffler in später geschredderten notizen so getaufte „flake dimension“ bleibt ein geheimnis von opaker, schwer zu fassender strahlkraft.

penelope is the 2nd installment from the ag & john robinson ep series produced by ray west. this time around they call on the prolifc west coast wordsmith blu on the title track “penelope” where all the emcees are painting verbal pictures of their own personal dream girl, this track also features frequent collaborator dave dar. the soundscapes provided by ray west are ill collages of jazz loops, live horns, percussion sounds, vintage drum machines and more. each of these recording sessions were labeled “tea with the butcha” by the collective and it truly does describe the essence of the sounds and conversations on these recordings.

the trickfinger project was recorded 10 years ago with no intention of being released at the time, made purely for discovery and learning experience. in my opinion, making music with no intention of releasing it is the best thing a musician can do for his own development in this day and age. the trickfinger lp was made in that mindset, and it was the beginning of a new musical life for me. when i hear it, it sounds like i am opening up doorways to new worlds, and i never have had that feeling listening to music i made for the purpose of releasing it and selling it.

at last! the full 12:45 john morales mix of this underground boogie classic gets the proper vinyl release it has always deserved! all those discogs cowboys can now safely crawl back under their stones! replicating the original 1982 12”, except this one doesn’t fade out a minute and a half before the end. the original flipside is present, only this time cut at 45rpm for higher audio resolution. available from 14-07-2017. this release is (i think!) the first time all twelve minutes and forty-five seconds have been pressed on wax (in an ultra limited quantity) so don’t miss it, steven!

we’re seeing red! promnite’s absolutely mental snake charmer ep gets the physical edition it deserves. this ain’t no soundcloud special — snake charmer is a four-track dive into life itself, showcasing the collaborative songwriting chops, elevated sound design and alwaysfunky approach that makes promnite one of the most exciting young producers in the game. this cali-via-nyc producer (and co-founder of la’s beloved athletixx dj collective) eschews run-of-the mill bangers for the bittersweet turn up of “gunsmoke,” featuring denzel curry, nell, j.k. the reaper and twelve’len, and short-story worthy clubland tales on “ride around” with adam vida. meanwhile, prom’ssmooth stepper “call me” with mark johns nuzzles up against the space-age trunk rattle of “cruise’n usa,” featuring ladonnis. promnite is bringing the love back to club music. for all their futuristic thump and sonic precision, the tracks on his snake charmer ep are wonderfully, messily human.

house music maestro louie vega returns to nurvous to remix disco hit ‘up jumped the devil’ by john davis & the monster orchestra. originally released in 1977 on sam records, ‘up jumped the devil’ featured music performances from some of philly’s finest musicians, many of whom also featured on albums by the salsoul orchestra. among them were michael “sugar bear” foreman on bass, drummer charles collins and guitarist dennis harris. percussion came from larry washington, whilst don renaldo provided the strings and horns. with a rugged and rough rhythm section and blazing horn parts, the track was an absolute bomb amongst disco djs at the time and continues to shine as a gem today.

2 classics on one 12 single, gems excavated from the deepest realms of the tk disco vaults.on side a we have former foxy frontman ishmael ish ledesma with his sublime esoteric disco cut from 1979 called don t stop , a deep, late night diamond of a track that will appeal to the more left-field disco lovers out there. don t stop has long been a favourite with the diggers with it s sweet vocals, synth heavy production and overall cosmic vibe. a beauty of a track indeed and one of tk s lesser known cuts. side b sees fusion guitarist john tropea s 1979 cosmic classic living in the jungle , a long time spin of dj s like daniele baldelli and dj harvey. infusing tropea s rock sensibilities with the throb of the disco dance-floor the track is a low slung, midtempo groover that touches all the right spots. overall, this essential double-header is a must have for all disco heads and left-field dj fiends.

first release on the label rhythm control barcelona, which is also the name of the record store owned by dj bruce lee. the a side comes with a track by phran featuring ivy barkakati titled -impulse-, old school flavored vocal house with a strong personality. this side is completed by an acidic remix by john barera. the b side is a track by phran called -yuka-, which samples cuban voices over minimal analog rhythms and an acid bass line. the remix is by a well-known dj from madrid, tr, a newcomer producing incredible tracks.

‘race to zero’ is the new album by musician and composer john matthias and producer, musician and composer jay auborn.
the album’s starting point was a series of acoustic improvisations recorded in a variety oflocations, from a 700 year old chapel in the devon countryside to a basement studio in reykjavík, iceland. in an attempt to create a fractured sense of space reflective of the digital condition, the duo found themselves working within a place that could only exist in the digital landscape.
by crushing the recordings through a hundred different virtual rooms of reverb and other chaotic digital processes, they collided, soared and splintered into sweeping new rhythms, melodies and drones.
the outcome is a unique landscape that blurs the line between the virtual and physical worlds.

nice price deal !!! a key milestone in the labels discography. the ep begins with a cool drifting taste of modulated pads, rhythmic guitar and simple drum work. highlighting a bit more of a funky disco groove, atlantis is a liquid soul jam for the ages. the beat picks up with count down to zero, as an uber progressive hypnotic loop track gets lost in the smooth key stabs. the tribal vibe picks up with dont look down, adding some more percussion, slow attack synth chords and crazy rhodes melodies. gabriel slows things down to a lazy dubbed-out house cut full of succulent strings, charismatic claps and middle-eastern harmonies. great for the late-night club slot or an introspective headphone listen, this solid ep is a sure fire success!
