it s been around three years since jpattersson opened up a whole new horizon of formerly unheard possibilities between the worlds of dub and techno. a lot has been happening ever since, and that’s very noticeable on his second album. it still has all the signature elements of jpattersson: there s his dreamy, virtuous trumpet play and his witty vocals, there s his dubby delays and heavyweight beats which often line up in a downbeat rhythm. however, besides his fanfares there s now also many folks, many musical friends who contribute to the vibe of this album. there s a track with berlin mc longfingah, latin-flavoured rhythms from polish reggae and dancehall producer dreadsquad as well as a stylistically wide range of remixes that reflect the symbiotic cooperation and mutual inspiration of these last years.

2017 saw cesar merveille & ryan crosson deliver their second long player in the shape of cerulean, drawing on their modern classical, jazz, ambient and abstract influences to create yet another unique listen featuring collaborations with a classical pianist, trumpet, guitar and double bass players. here we see those original parts eschewed into something entirely fresh from friends and close associates of the duo. leading on the release is cadenza boss lucianos sous le sol interpretation of arp, which twists and turns through the hypnotic chimes and emotive piano chords of the original whilst stirring in luciens signature modulating and intricately evolving rhythmic style. following is a collaborative rework from new yorks phil moffa and seth troxler which employs ethereal synth drones and stuttering vocal cuts alongside a bumpy percussive drive and pulsating subs. perlons bruno pronsato steps up next to remix even tides, delivering his typically raw and emotive style via glitched out, mind-bending percussion, elongated bass drones and cleverly reshaped cuts of the originals cinematic elements. l.as clovis then closes the package with his remix of nordic bummers, employing shuffled hats, lumpy subs and crunchy claps at its core whilst horn swells and aiy atmospherics ebb and flow throughout.

‘family horror x good times’ is an extensive 15 tracks compilation, where the leipzig label reflects on an intense and impassioned decade. kann asked close friends and long time idols to play their part to the full to complete the third edition of the label’s family horror compilation series. the outcome is a clear snapshot of the musical inclinations of the three label founders, sevensol & map.ache (aka manamana) and bender, encapsulating an idiosyncratic, modern house sound that demands an emotional response. the compilation comes rounded off by a booklet of photographs from ria aka lux which just like the music captures some of the beautiful ‘good times’ from this very special period, this time on paper.

the label will serve as a vehicle through which the german producer takes a step away from the club environment by presenting new sonic interpretations, including experimental, minimalist, and atmospheric. material will come from monoloc himself and friends, and the focus will be on “dramatic” sounds with drone and noise influences. think movie soundtracks and film music, albeit with both feet planted in the electronic genre. each release will aim to “tell a story” through 8 to 10 productions.
unterland will launch in end of march 2018 with a collaborative ep by monoloc and beauty of inconsequenz, a unsearchable and unidentified project with no previous recording history. the eight tracks are all based heavily on field recordings, the sound is dark and deeply atmospheric with dubstep influences. while distanced somewhat from the 4/4 format, the tracks are cerebral and hypnotic.
from there on, there will be 3-4 releases per year, each of which will be accompanied by high quality artwork as curated by borchardt, who will work closely with selected photographers and artists to provide imagery that aesthetically compliments the music.

located in toronto, forth is a collective of individuals who care deeply about music and its community. having started out throwing diy style raves, they soon became inspired by the city’s hunger for self-expression and the need for a local space that could offer artists a platform for their vision.
with this in mind, the crew present their debut release forth vol. 1 a six-track compilation of some of toronto’s finest talent. calling upon friends and colleagues who represent the diverse underground electronic scene, the compilation features club focused material from ciel (peach discs, diswoman), gingy (clone/royal oak, it’s not u it’s me), r (opal tapes, jericho one), kontravoid (cititrax, fliesch), hadi (forth), and joel eel (forth, x-img).

art alfie inaugurates his velvet pony imprint with a four track ep. the new label will function as a platform for the artist and his friends, shining light on a catalogue of music from the stockholm scene. having built a strong reputation alongside mr. tophat with a string of revered releases on the duos karlovak imprint, velvet pony signals the opening of a new door for art alfie. the project arrives after a highly acclaimed album on studio barnhaus, as well as his first solo ep on karlovak last year on which the underground hit flaunting was featured. velvet pony trax 1 sees art alfie brandishing his immaculate production technique over 4 distinct grooves. soft spoken takes us to the twilight zone with low slung bass riffs and jazzy chords, whilst ‘since ive seen you offers a dubbed out dose of twisted disco for the after-hours. on the b side, hideouts pairs hypnotic percussion with an undeniable funk, and front, a co-production with mans glaeser - raises the heat for an energetic finish.

the score introduces several new themes interwoven throughout the film, including identities for the character rose tico, the interactions between rey and luke skywalker on ahch-to island, and the resistance’s desperate escape from the first order. the score also reprises numerous themes and motifs introduced in the force awakens, including those for the characters of rey, kylo ren, poe dameron, and snoke, as well as the -march of the resistance- and -the jedi steps-. themes introduced in the original trilogy return as well, including -luke’s theme-, -leia’s theme-, -the rebel fanfare-, and the -force theme- from a new hope, -yoda’s theme-, -the imperial march-, and -han solo and the princess- from the empire strikes back, and, -luke and leia- and -the emperor’s theme- from return of the jedi. excerpts of the -tie fighter attack- cue, first heard in a new hope and reprised for return of the jedi, are also included. -the emperor’s theme- is the only returning theme to not be included within the official soundtrack presentation, it occurs in the film when snoke tortures rey for information. the score briefly quotes -aquarela do brasil- by ary barroso in its -canto bight- track as a reference to the 1985 terry gilliam film brazil. it also contains a brief quote of williams’s own theme for the long goodbye (co-composed by johnny mercer) during finn and rose’s escape, although this was not included in the official soundtrack release.

dj boring and stanley schmidt launch new label ‘vienna’ with their collaborative ep - vienna001. a new place for their friends and like minded artists to call home, vienna (named after the city in which they met) kicks off with a three track ode to 90s idm and rave culture.
heavy on the atmospherics, opener ‘stay young’ weaves field recordings and background noise between primal melodies and uk breaks for an immersive and deeply ethereal cut. ‘butterfly walk’ takes you further into the rave, blending classic 90’s euphoria with uplifting piano chords and twisted acid synths, before stanley’s nostalgic anthem ‘i neva said it’ closes out the ep by reworking a david grant vocal over a kinetic electro beat.
recreating all the experiences and emotions of raves gone by, but through a contemporary lens, vienna001 offers an impressive glimpse into what’s in-store for the fledgling imprint.

violet and bleid met last year in lisbon, at the radio quântica studios. in the very same day, they impromptu started working together on a track: a cover of underground sound of lisbon’s so get up to celebrate international womens day. together, alongside a crew of young lisbon djs and activists, they also run the queer techno party mina, one of the most vital things going on in the city’s nightlife - the picture in the artwork was taken in the backstage of one of those infamous, dark-room-equipped parties.
bleid remixed naive001’s togetherness by violet, and that dope rework made it to rroxymore’s bag (as heard at berghain) and was played on bbc radio 6, rinse fm and +++. the pair became friends, started bouncing ideas about production techniques, rap skills and the importance (or lack thereof) of the classics in dance music. making more music together happened naturally.
naive002 feels like a continuation of naive’s first release in some ways: the jungle-inspired chopped breaks, sonic synth work and oneiric pads are still there but gain a heavier, perhaps more somber tone at times, exploding into depth or ecstasy at others.

a vinyl debut of a great serbian label cmok (centar muzic, omladinske kulture), which is quite known by a narrow circle of professionals and great sound lovers. this release has got a total urbanism in the sound that undoubtedly will be a big joy to drop on some good party with friends.
