nena (1983) is the first album by german pop rock band nena and the second studio album of its singer, gabriele -nena- kerner. the album was a great success in west germany and the second single -99 luftballons- � a fable of nuclear war brought about by a bunch of balloons in the sky being mistaken on radar for a pre-emptive missile attack- successfully reached #1 in the music charts in the u.s. and worldwide.
the first nena album was released as part of the music genre called neue deutsche welle, new german wave movement in the german music. all five members of the band contributed to the songwriting. they were a unique group of musicians with a strong intuitive grasp of both classic pop and rock formulas. nena insisted that she saw herself as a member of the band and not as their leader.
the album is still regarded as an unsurpassed classic of german pop history, although most later nena albums are not far behind in quality.

the copenhagen based pop wonders blaue blume return with a new ep - sobs. the band formed around 6 years ago in a provincial danish town, drawn to each others love for rich, playful music. blaue blume (blue flower) is the epitome of a romantic band, their songs are brimming with love and yearning. now �sobs, the follow up to their �syzygy album in 2015, continues to build their reputation as a best kept secret, about to find a whole new audience of devotees. all four tracks for the ep were recorded in late 2016 in a three story villa, formerly owned by a religious cult. the band used the weird space away from the city to create a framework for the lyrics and the music. the band explains: blaue blume has been our band for about 6 years. in a bigger provincial town we started playing right out of highschool. at the moment we live in copenhagen and every day we play, write and work on sounds. its sort of become a life project. in our heads we make music that is playful, rich in detail and popish or somewhat smiling. for some beautifully inexplicable reason we ended up doing music together. in a way it seems sacred or at least meaningful. macabre is a happy song about being afraid of dying. some of us find that even the best life can be lonely sometimes. we found it interesting to address this taboo within the frame of a song that people could potentially dance or sing along to.

when wph boss red d heard toriton being played by ken ishii during a wph radio takeover on belgiums studio brussel radio station he ran to the booth and knew this track had wph written all over it. not abiding to any trends, just devastatingly beautiful house music. some licence negotiations and months later satoshi fumi agreed and made lalalalaland, a brand new track to go along with toriton and make up this ep the title track has that unmistakable detroit feel that takes you from melancholy to euphoria and back, while lalalalaland has been described by people hearing it in red ds sets this summer as japanese sunset trance or end of the night eyes closed hands in the air stuff. whatever the words, its the music that counts and satoshi fumi takes his place among the wph family in style!

astral dust is a 4 song excursion bridging the styles of derek michael and marshall applewhite. this project stems from a live recording of a set performed by michael in 2002. after being tucked away for almost 15 years, the recording was found and sent to applewhite who dissected the performance into fragments and breathed a new life into them. while some portions of this release are distinctly sludgy, the majority is a perfect amalgamation of both michaels and applewhites hard-edge, melodic borderline idm styles. the digital release will feature 2 digital only sub cuts from the sessions.

the original >chained to a dead camel< is a seminal track in techno history, and is still being championed by many djs worldwide. clouds have tuned their original to create three new, alternate works. perc completes the set with his own club-ready version.

it is time for the nang and rayko worlds to collide once more. the awesome madrid-based dj and producer is back with his second album on nang. as ever the grooves are wide, the beats are large and the musical elements ooze funk and nu disco sheen. thing open up with the title track and recent single no stopping. the track features the fine vocals from tania haroshka and it is a powerhouse of synth disco, electronic groove with real bass guitar and darting guitars giving it just a tint of miami vice sheen. 2016 single crazy is up next with it s catchy hooks and counter melodies. it comes with just the right amount of good-time groove to bring a smile to any face. things tone down robot life which is a creeping synth fest with wandering grooves and chunky drums. danielle moore features with a fine vocal on a pure rayko style classic cosmic pirate. muscular basses and darting guitars being deployed to maximum effect. ocarina of time is next with its layered complexity and stabby synth bass notes. tania haroshika returns for the final trio of tunes on the album. her fine vocals melding effortlessly with the slick production from our hero. first up is hot which builds the music slowly adding layers of multi tracked guitars and real bass before breaking forth into song. u sneaks in from the leftfield with its quirky strings and arpegiated synth-clavi lines. the album closes with the (slightly) melancholic and pensive groover space boat. tania adding a brooding vocal over a pulsating juno style bassline. a fine effort from our madrid based hero who once again shows everyone what this top-of-his-game dj-producer can do with some guitars and keyboards.

brand new glastonbury production duo speakman sound team up with frankie forman for the palliative psychedelic dance stylings of latest single warm. warm follows the breakneck success of debut single in flight which became a top viral track on spotify while being touted by key tastemakers including 6music�s lauren laverne, radio x�s john kennedy, soho radio�s eddie temple morris and radio 1�s huw stephens, monki and phil taggart. the latter commendations led to the brothers being offered a slot on the bbc introducing stage at glastonbury for a ram-packed homecoming. brothers todd and guy, the duo behind speakman sound, spent their childhood in the glastonbury area immersed in music through their father, a guitarist in psych-rock scene including bands such as hawkwind. growing into adolescence against a backdrop of rave culture in somerset shaped the psychedelic tinged future bass sound they create in their studio in north london today. warm is a sonic embrace, a trip into the uterine comforts of music. a rolling kick drum structures it, ostensibly four-on-the-floor, but with syncopated fibrillations, the sound of a heart skipping a beat. with frankie forman�s brilliant, mantra-like vocal and tobie tripp�s sweeping strings, warm reminds us of the comfort we find in music. enveloping in its beauty, it�s the latest majestic entry into speakman sound�s unique and beatific body of work. that the speakman brothers are producers in their own right should come as no surprise. having received a start-up grant for a studio in cricklewood, they have built an artistic hub from scratch and are surrounded by a creative coterie of young musicians and talented artists practicing across film and music in north london where they hold regular late-night jams and parties.

optimo trax presents a 4-track ep from germanys mathias schober, head honcho of berlin�s lossless label. as always we prefer to let our artists do the talking. heres what mathias has to say about this release - the idea behind all tracks on the ep was a simple setup of drums and one synth that would do a main sequence/sound, yet theres a lot of detail in all of them. in a certain way features a 808ish beat with a main sequence coming from a tiny monophon synth called atmegatron - 8bit love, it turned out being much more music than i thought it would be when i set everything up. but what rules are made for is the same setup but the sequence is a 101 and so are all the washed out fx synths. on is to break them i went a different route, i had the dub, delayed stabs synth first as i was messin with my moog and a space echo - which btw is used on every single track i release, if you haven�t noticed yet. so i was trying to build something around those stabs in order to fit the track to the others and so i ended up with another sequence coming from my moog. as there was still space on the record, i decided to add an ambient version of is to break them, i love the ambience on this track. i hope that my love for dub sounds is obvious enough on these tracks. happy i found such an excellent home for the ep!

on the a-side things start of with �inityiat� which simply can be seen as a distorted form of �initiation�. starting of hypnotic, the track slowly progresses adding a plethora of subtle percussive elements. an ethnic and mysterious chanting complements the latter throughout the sonic voyageand caters for a promising start. part two of the a-side, �hata isler�, takes off where �inityiat� ended, but amplified in strength. subliminal voices manipulated harmoniously into the pads are mixed with sophisticated alternations of snares and hats. the result: a perfect continuation of the spirit the first track. side b commences with �insan�, a title that serves the track right. straight forward, upgrading the tempo of the previous tracks into a drive that�s impossible to resist. the maelstrom of drones and soundscapes on a layer of thundering sounds, induce a new stage of sonic hypnosis, until it gradually phases out into silence. �tzotzil� on the other hand is a skillfuly crafted tooltrack that�s build around a glooming and reverbing baseline.

valby003 sees louf return, fusing heavier club elements with sentimental synth work. �if i was� is a pummelling drum track, laced with synths that rise and fall gently, providing a fleeting moment of warm autumnal euphoria.

in the year 2053, two japanese musical explorers by the names of katsuyoshi and yousuke, travelled to the city of breda in the netherlands. whilst drinking beers in a park near the train station, they stumbled upon an old, partially decayed usb stick, hidden behind a trashcan. with usb technology being long absolete by then, they had no way of checking what was on there until returning back home to tokyo, where yousuke still had a macbook from around the turn of the century tucked away under his bed. after retreiving the data, the stick turned out to contain two 128kbps mp3s of unreleased coco bryce material. utilizing an extensive and painstaking radiocarbon dating procedure, they managed to pinpoint the production date to the spring of 2017. the tokyo natives then proceeded to reverse the mp3s back to their initial wav format via state of the art 2053 audio technology, and emailed them to richy at binary feedback, who subjected the files to a spot of mastering. richy immediately recognised the tunes from a series of youtube id request videos that had been doing the rounds for the previous 36 years. being the shrewd business man that he is, he decided to contact rick sanchez, who in turn teletransported the tracks back to 2017, dropping them off at an undisclosed dutch pressing plant. romanian visual artist raw parigi was contacted to sort out the labels, after which the records were pressed up and distributed to shops across the globe, hopefully making their way into the homes of hundreds of jungle and drumfunk enthusiasts worldwide. amen

�i�ve said it before, but dancehall and its influence on uk music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing chris goldfinger on radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else i�d heard before. i love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and i love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.
when it came time to build another ep for critical, i decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator rider shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets i ve become known for. there�s no halftime and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even disciplined - and hopefully we�ve succeeded.

girlfriends and other machines is another distinctive work by mostly undiscovered berlin based artist rhytch displaying his unique dirty and soulful sound. the 6 track ep varies from edgy deep house to weirdo krautrock reminding one of the genreroots, while sounding like a legit fresh reinterpretation. the artists voice being revealed on most of the tracks is giving the listener a glimpse of who he is and adds some character traits to infamous rhytch. the ep gets completed by an outstanding marbod remix, which is going to make people snap with its flickering distorted 909 hats woven into one of his typical psychedelic housepads creating an irresistible groove and atmosphere. the ep being released on berlin underground imprint lofile records is a nice prospect of what is to expect of further releases and obviously a wise choice for label and artist which share the same hobbies - drinking and smoking.

the 1980s. neo-liberal excess. crumbling communism. military juntas ruling with an iron fist. and of course, freaked out music. contort yourself are turning back the clock and returning to an unholy fount of inspiration with -80s underground cassette culture volume 1. a buffet of beaten up and brutalised tracks are on offer from unknown outfits and respected experimenters. across two lps expect to find noise reductions, post punk bitterness, no wave grunts, distortion soaked strings and vocals lost in a hail of pain. a road map into the weird and wild world of diy back alley artists who, armed with only a tape and an idea, gave the established music norms a sharp fist to the throat.

pathway traxx strikes again with this vinyl only underground bomb featuring 2 of the hottest stars in the underground scene, jack wickham and michael james. this 4 track ep delivers punchy underground sounds all designed for the dancefloor. label boss niko maxen serves up both original tracks spanning rolling romanian tech, through to pumping house inspired minimal. jack wickhams rework of the original falls right into his signature sound that has seen his tracks become the staple diet of artists such as raresh and rhadoo. michael james steps up to remix duties on the track cobra and gives us a perfect example of why he is being chased down by some of the biggest underground labels around. this ep is nothing short of an all round banger!

electronic pop act penelope is the second release on fellow swede pjotr�s label. backed up by remixes from roger 23 and physical therapy, the band offers three dystopian pop songs spanning from futuristic, villainous r&b to trance filled breakbeat ending with a guitar based ballad - all songs being infected by penelope�s machiavellian lusting vocals.
roger 23 delivers two versions of the title track, the first a forceful chi-town beat adventure with raw outer space chords (including full original vox), the second a reduced effective piercing dub straight from the outer sphere. physical therapy closes with a psychedelic version of �rattlesnake� built around hard-hitting tribal drums.

after a lengthy hiatus, tuskegee music is back with a heavyweight release indeed: it features tracks written by detroit heavyweights seth troxler�under his young seth alias� and cult fxhe boss omar s. amazingly they were written 11 years ago and have been long forgotten until recently being unearthed. the first track here was inspired by a trip seth made to berlin�s club der visionaere in 2005. �it basically was me returning to detroit and telling omar about this crazy music i heard ricardo play during the day.� the result, �deep�(cdv 2006 mix), is a spine tingling atmospheric deep house track. the drums are lo-fi and loose, the bassline is a meandering thing that really sucks you in and soft, gentle toms tumble around the groove and encourage you to cut loose. then comes the experimental slow motion drum shuffle of �detroit after midnight� which the pair made after �finding loads of weird records in his basement sampling them and making a classic mpc detroit cut.� it has the sounds of people talking as if coming from the room next door laid over a lazy and undulating bassline, and is brilliantly weird and sketchy. last of all, young seth goes solo on �luiza�s inferno� five minutes of him jamming on omar�s ms20 with a warbling synth line coated in warm tape hiss and layers of dust. it�s a beatless piece that shows how inventive and ahead of his time troxler was even as a young man. this is a brilliantly unusual ep and another winner for seth troxler and the martinez brothers� tuskegee label.

what about this love is not only a famous larry heard song but now it s also a house music label. the first release sees the detroit outsider javonntte and the berliner-italian deep88 on a real underground raw house song, matching the detroit soul house with the rawness and liveness of the italian producer, creating an epic vocal track, something that could have been made in the golden age of house music. on the flip there s the melchior sultana treatment, a name that is rising release after release thanks to his works and nothing else, playing all the kinds of instruments and being able of using sequencers and drum machines creating a perfect balance between a real musician and a serious house producer, add to all this a deep88 remix and a javonntte amazing dub version and the watl01 is served. more to come.

in physics, entropy is a quantity generally described as the measure of disorder within any kind of thermodynamic system, including the universe. it counts the microscopic states that system can assume when open, interacting with others or getting altered by external conditions.
thus, entropy makes for the perfect description of the way ilpo väisänen (pan sonic, i- lp-o in dub) and dirk dresselhaus (schneider tm, a s s, locust fudge) have approached music creation since the establishment of their collaborative project angel (now die angel) in 1999. allowing energy to flow freely through machines, bodies and different acoustic conditions, they�ve generated a powerful archive of mutating sonic states. a kind of creative attitude that favors exploring the physical complexity of unstructured electronics.
that�s where the title for their first release on cosmo rhythmatic comes from, �entropien� being the finnish word and the german plural for entropy. getting back to the stripped down set of their beginnings (modular synths, effects, and processed guitar), they�ve come out with one of their most, intense, rawest and noisiest albums to date, showcasing an impressing scale of dynamics while attacking the senses with belligerent tones. oren ambarchi also shows up on two tracks, intertwining his drums, field recording, and guitar within the duo�s discordant layers.

released in 1974, téo azevedos first album grito selvagem (wild shout) is an irresistible blend of soul and rock with an unmistakable brazilian character. as many other lost gems of time past, the album found little commercial success, and still during the 70s teo turned forever to the true brazilian popular music the forró, the roots of sertanejo and the rhythms and traditions of brazils often forgotten countryside becoming, from then on, a genuine cultural reference in brazil not only as musician and composer, but also as a poet and researcher of popular folklore, being awarded the grammy latino prize in 2013.

music from memorys final compilation of 2017 sees the release of the double album 1 by 1, which brings together the works of american experimental musician geoffrey landers. during a period spanning from 1979 to 1987, this denver, colorado based multi-instrumentalist, composer, record producer and engineer, conceived several solo albums. only two of these, the ever decimal pulse and habitual features along with the single breedlove were ever released on vinyl. being heavily involved in the local industrial/punk/new wave scene and wanting to create a recording studio available to record artists regardless of their financial circumstances landers set up the packing house studio in 1981. this analog 8-track recording facility was located in a former slaughterhouse in the stockyards of denver and was a place of significant activity for the next three years with the studio releasing recordings from numerous artists most notably allen ginsberg.

new 030303 release. john heckle s first one for 030303 starts off deliciously with translate- being a moody and melodic and bouncer that caters to a twisted dance floor. terix, the opener on the b-side is a beautiful reminder of derrick mays detroit, rhythm is rhythms kao-tic harmony in particular. the end of this record then, is like the end of most nights: with lots of melodies going on and a stomping rhythm hear me is by far the most mind bending track of this excellent 12inch.

conceptually linked to its predecessor silent earth from 2016, refugium delves deeper into the same vision of a peaceful and apocalyptic utopia. taking an intimate and introspective point of view, the album explores the quiet and in-between moments of being. using hypnotic patterns, organic pulses and complex layered drones, refugium is ambient music that spins around its own set up atmosphere. it evokes a pendulum of emotion and thus creates an in-between moment all by itself, a refuge, a haven. download code included

this record, and the full 2xlp that will follow it, are dedicated to and inspired by events in 2015 & 2016, which saw the spectre of global crisis come knocking at europes doorstep. during this time, more than a million migrants and refugees fled their homes in the middle east, northern africa, sub-saharan africa and other conflict ravaged areas in search of a better life. for many, hopes of a future for themselves and their families lay in continental europe. while the reasons for such displacement, on a scale unseen in almost a century, are many, so are the reasons for europe being seen as the ideal destination. the relative peace and calm of the continent and the prospect of building prosperous lives in western europe was enough to mobilize multitudes to embark on the treacherous journey to europe. one of the most well-trodden paths on this journey was the balkan route, a trail leading through turkey, greece, and the former yugoslavia. this route was not without its dangers, and the dreams of many were dashed by impassible security fences and discordant eu politics, as one by one they were turned away at borders, or worse, forcibly returned to their countries of origin.

europa is the first single that represents the seed of discontent, from which the 2xlp grew. it was recorded during long jam sessions in belgrade as the media spotlight started to dim. the city became the purgatorial destination for a large number of migrants, whose journeys had been cut short and this record reflects the atmosphere of disillusionment and uncertainty about the future, which descended on the serbian capital.

blue hawaii is the songwriting, production, and dj project of raphaelle �ra� standell and alexander �agor� kerby. after some four years apart, the duo rekindled their creative flame in 2016 and begun writing music about an intimate relationship ra was experiencing mostly over instant messaging, sparking ideas about the meaning of closeness in our highly connected world. tenderness is a concept album which brings forth the challenges of handling relationships online. maintaining closeness over distance and a need for more tenderness between each other - both in real and virtual life - are important themes in the album s progression. the album draws upon influence from 90 s dance tracks and deep disco cuts, often mixed with ra�s acoustic guitar playing. it unfolds like a play and each song being supported by shorter interlude pieces: skits, phone calls, acoustic demos, real life samples and quiet left-turns.

shintaro.d is new on the scene, but this promising japanese producer follows up on his debut on his own label init with this assured 12inch for jus groove it, taking the stripped down deep house template and injecting it with an off-kilter approach to sound design that subtly makes for one of the most effective dj tools heard in recent memory. that track in question is kohisikarubeki, and its remix by rhythm & soul takes those intricately carved shards of sound design and smooths them into a more conventional house music shape. the b-side finds shintaro.d turning out more of that subversive, future-minded deep house business, with waganamidakana being a clear highlight.

bionda e lupo are like little you ll have heard before, a boy/girl band like no other. synth wave is fed a line of modern alienation, delusory disco to a disdainful drum beat, house emptied and ridiculed. rhythms are stark, melodies are as mechanical as the lyrics. -zug der vogel- is sparse, vocals intertwine in an empty embrace whilst bars sparkle. -twoi glasza- is more playful. bright words shimmer against sweeping strings. the past is parodied across the ep but nowhere more so than in -die kinder aus dem park.- a former classic dug out before being peppered by machine gun percussion. the stilted rhyme of -eckstein- closes, a ballad of bittersweet images and lost hopes.
