jeremiah jae (aka black daffi) is an experimental hip-hop artist born and raised on the south side of chicago. he is a visual artist, producer, emcee and founding member of black jungle squad, a music collective consisting of close friends and family. early works by jae dating back to 2007, display his unique style and approach to crafting his own version of “hip-hop”. the genre is one of many foundations the artist uses to communicate his range of styles as shown on previous self-released albums, compilations and collaborations (holy smoke, oliver the 2nd, l’orange, cohenbeats, pbdy), as well as praiseworthy offerings on brainfeeder and warp records. with his newest solo album daffi, jae expands on his production and speaks in the persona of his alter ego to express a darker side.

john digweed s long standing live in series continues to tokyo this time we head to tokyo and to one of the best underground clubs out there. contact is an amazing basement club with a low ceiling, minimal lighting and an incredible sound system. john digweed this 3-part vinyl sampler, out via bedrock, captures elements from across digweed s set from the deep to the peak and everything in between. vinyl two sees tracks from marc romboy, robert babicz and luke brancaccio & simon berry feat. jjd.

this one has been a long time coming. great 12”s never get shelved at lddlm, time is not the essence. benedikt frey has been part of the extended family since his remix of car’s idle eyes and we crossed paths a few times at robert johnson in frankfurt. init, his project with his other half nadia d’alò, has seen releases on neighbours such as hivern or correspondant, our door was naturally open to their pretty personal brand of “off-kilter techno” as ra says. stereometric is almost a definition of init’s acid mind. failing their own tricks, heavy atmosphere and unusual restraint. nuts is almost an instrumental extension of the title track, when your head finally hit that window pane. wheels slows the rush down, wandering on an imaginary khyber pass. this is only deception though, mindwork being a real exercise in post-goa trance. hope you enjoy the trip. see you after the summer.

l_cio is a brazilian artist who brings his own flute playing to his music. he has previously collaborated with the likes of portable on the huge hit ‘surrender’ and is a live act who has held residencies at plenty of key clubs in brazil. he’s also toured all over the world from egg london to robert johnson in frankfurt and released on labels like perlon, soul clap records and d.edge. his eight-track album is an emotive affair with deep house grooves embellished with his own spine tingling instrumentals and flute.

there’s a reason why so many of house music’s early releases have endured over the decades. the best of them have a quality that defies logic. early house records like heard s own -washing machine,- or the -no way back- by adonis, still have the power to stun listeners and drive clubs wild. they sound alien and beautiful, simultaneously ingrained within us and so unlike everything that followed. and few sound as beautiful, or as alien, as -can you feel it.- by 1986, heard—who was born and bred in chicago and been playing in bands as a drummer—had already proved to the world that he was a master of poignant, enthralling house. the previous year’s elegant “mystery of love,” originally released on alleviated records, had featured an insistent ascending bassline repeating under a plaintive, swooning analog synth, with a gentle, conga-led rhythm setting the pace. it was soon rerecorded in a slightly more fleshed-out style, this time featuring frequent collaborator robert owens on vocals—”there’s a moment in our lives when we all must try the mystery of love”—and rereleased on d.j. international.

fort romeau returns with his first 12inch of 2018 following a string of releases on live at robert johnson, running back and ghostly international as well as appearances on compilations from rush hour, cocoon, and mule musiq. on the a side, pablo unfurls with swirling arpeggios which build to a euphoric crescendo while the more heady terracotta explores polyphonic syncopated fm sequences and ambiguous chord progressions.

dabei hat jeder einzelne produzent seinen ganz eigenen bezug zu daf. so erinnert sich gabi delgado, dass er früher beim ausgehen immer zu -i feel love- getanzt hat, westbam hatte einen seiner ersten bühnenauftritte mit daf und dj hell und robert görl veröffentlichten beide auf dem münchner kultlabel disko b, aus dem später dj hells international deejay gigolo records als ableger hervorging. mit dem grandiosen remix von boys noize und dem etwas experimentelleren ansatz von lor (aka gregory fergusson) nimmt sich dann die nächste generation die legendären klassiker vor. natürlich kommen auch die beiden herren zu wort und reinterpretieren ihre eigenen stücke auf eine ganz neue art.
