smalhans is the fourth solo album by norwegian producer hans-peter lindstrøm, and his second album to come out in 2012. earlier this year he released six cups of rebel, which was a very personal album for lindstrøm and showed his more experimental side. now, this forthcoming record on smalltown supersound, finds lindstrøm back on the dance floor with six monumental tracks – classic lindstrøm style.
smalhans was mixed by his friend todd terje, who has also made extended edits which will be released as 12 inches. the album title is an old norwegian word and means scarcity or simply poverty. each track on the album is titled after a traditional norwegian meal. smallhans is lindstrøm at his very best, perfected by todd terje.

bjorn torske is a special artist with a special name. he was born in northern norway where fishing has been the main industry for hundreds of years and his name literally translates as >bear cod<. even making dinner is unique in norway: you put the potatoes on to boil, go out to sea and catch a fish, then return to prepare the meal…this process is known as >kokning<. to say that northern norwegians do things their own way would be putting it lightly … to say that bjorn torske is making music his own way would be exactly right.

london s idjut boys (dan tyler & conrad mcconnell) and rune lindbaek of oslo are meanderthals. as longtime friends and fans of each other’s music they have discussed the idea of working together in a musical context for years and in 2008, they finally began to make those ideas a reality. throughout the year they traveled back and forth between oslo and london to create their debut album, desire lines. the album is due the 11th of may. but before that, this 12&#8243,,, taster of the andromeda (album track) as well as a idjut boys remix) a meanderthal is a theory by matthew tiessen about a human that is always in the way of others. whether it be the person on the wrong side of the escalator, the person walking slowly, the person bicycling on the pavement, it is essentially the person that stops the flow of urban daily life. on the contrary, lindbaek, tyler and mcconnell s definition does not see this person as a threat, but as a person that is completely in his own world – a slacker, musically on his own. this could also be a good description of lindbaek and the two idjut boys. meanderthals serves mellow balearic disco. a warm and dreamy blend of dub, folk, prog, kraut, psychedelia and 70s west-coast combined to invent an organic, slanted, and proggy feel. recorded live, the album features contributions from good friends, including pete z (dj harvey) on keyboards, des morgan (yamwho?) on drums and percussion, malcolm jospeh (grace jones) on bass, per martinsen (aka mental overdrive) on percussion and raj gupta (laj & quakerman) as sound engineer

obwohl sich ihre energie und ihr auftreten seit den fruehen post-punk-tagen von rip rig & panic nicht veraendert haben, stellt blank project eine musikalische abkehr von allem dar, was neneh cherry zuvor gemacht hat..

rocketnumbernine verbinden einfluesse von detroit ueber london bis afrika und zurueck. ihr eigenwilliger sound ist ein psychedelischer dance-punk-jazz-mashup, der an den space-jazzer sun ra erinnert und sich im laufe der zeit von improvisation zu kernigen club-nuggets entwickelte. 2010 erschien die kult-12inch roseland/metropolis auf four tets text-label, die naechste text-12inch wird eine kooperation mit neneh cherry.

mit neneh cherry hŠtte wohl kaum noch jemand gerechnet. erst recht nicht damit, dass die stimme von 7 seconds an der seite eines free-jazz-trios suicide covert. zwischen neneh cherry und the thing hat es offenbar gefunkt. vor zwei jahren trafen die prominente sŠngerin und das radikale free-jazz-trio erstmals zusammen, nun haben sie gemeinsam ein album eingespielt. angesichts der hits von neneh cherry, die sich zwischen hiphop, soul und ethno bewegten, mutet ihr comeback-projekt abwegig an. betrachtet man jedoch die familiŠren hintergrŸnde, liegt die kollaboration eigentlich auf der hand: neneh cherry ist die tochter des jazzmusikers don cherry, der the thing mit einem seiner stŸcke zu ihrem namen inspiriert hat. der renommierte schwedische saxophonist mats gustafsson und das norwegische rhythmus-duo ingebrigt hŒker flaten und paal nilssen-love transzendieren das spektrum herkšmmlicher jazz-trios. neben einem cover von don cherry finden sich darauf songs von the stooges, mf doom, martina topley-bird und ornette coleman. wenn nicht alles tŠuscht, steht mit diesem album die †berraschung des jahres ins haus.(78sfm)

the late steve reid, veteran jazz drummer and percussionist, and kieran hebden (four tet), the british electronic musician/producer young enough to be his grandson, present the fifth and final installment of their momentous synergy. the music on this double cd was recorded in concert on 20 june 2009 in the foyer of the queen elizabeth hall at london s southbank centre, as part of the meltdown festival curated by free jazz legend ornette coleman. for this marathon workout, reid and hebden were joined by swedish power saxophonist mats gustafsson, whose fiery blowing style had inspired kieran to seek out a drummer like steve to work with in the first place. live at the south bank stands as a memorial to a thrilling and productive partnership sadly cut off in its prime.

the thing return with guitars (gasp!) from none other than otomo yoshihide. recorded by jim o rourke live at pit inn in tokyo, shinkjuku crawl documents the different aspects of the thing and how they are shaping and melting together with the wonderful guitar magic of yoshihide. otomo yoshihide first came to international prominence in the 1990s as the leader of the noise rock group ground zero, and has since worked in a variety of contexts, ranging from free improvisation to noise, jazz, avant-garde and contemporary classical.
