tatu metsätähti and tatu peltonen formed their electro duo mr velcro fastener in the small town of turku, finland back in 1995. in 1999, after a couple of twelve inches, they released their first full length album ‘lucky bastards living up north’ on i220, which was well noted (not only for its hyper colourful cover art by the designers republic). the album took the duo touring in europe and overseas, and led to further releases on labels like stars-music, ali b’s air recordings, solina records, cyber dance and of course billy nasty’s electrix, as well as remixes for the likes of hardfloor, marco carola, dk8, transparent sound and aux88. returning to electrix with their third full ep for the label (and a gap of 13 years!) they have delivered their own unique and recognizable electro sound with two new cuts. ‘a monster in two worlds’ with its electro-funk sound, classic vocoded vocals and grinding groove is a perfect opener, while ‘bakteriofag’ (bacteriophage in english) like its name, creeps up like a virus, infecting the senses with its crisp and shining melody. additionally, there’s remixes of ‘a monster in two worlds’ from silicon scally (carl finlow in his electro guise) and m-twelve (the new moniker recently launched by billy nasty and surface’s nick dunton) to complete the line-up.

seth troxler’s play it say it label opens up 2018 with another release from the highly regarded ataxia, who serve up their third ep for the imprint. the detroit duo impressed with their previous outings on the label, the supertouch ep back in july 2017 and the acid ep in 2016. since then they have also released on leftroom and nervous and continued their eight year residency at prominent detroit venue tv lounge. their fresh take on motor city techno often comes with flashes of acid and makes cyber punks ted krisko and eric ricker one of the most interesting pairs in the game. opening up the essential ep is ‘quicksand’, an immediately arresting and busy electro track with real machine soul. the bassline bubbles and boils underneath crisp percussion and emotive keys bring a sense of tenderness. it’s a macho cut with robust drums and is sure to win over any crowd. the fresh ‘hot snakes’ is a deep, menacing track with dark bass gurgling beneath the airy hi hats. frazzled synths are dystopian and brain frying, and together the whole thing takes you into hypnotic territory with an intense sense of urgency that is impossible to ignore. last of all is the freakiest of the lot. the brilliant ‘texas is the reason’ has circling bass that is warped and intriguing and will own any club, while the drums drive on and trippy keys are skewed and twisted up top. it’s a truly intense record for late in the night that is sure to become a big tune. this is an expressive and varied ep full of contemporary and innovative detroit house and techno sounds and marks another step in the ataxia story.

the superb forbidden planet is a shiny early electro cut with a great funk bass line, a real instrumental groove and fantastic melodies that shimmer like a hot sun. it s filled with joy and sounds as fresh today as ever, the way it ducks and dives and offers real warmth. the francisco remix keeps the funk vibe but changes the groove to be a more chicago house style cut. as such it has a rasping bassline, big drums and coarse percussion that make you want to jack. the masterful ali renault—a go-to disco and synth specialist who runs cyber dance records, human shield record company and most recently his own vivod imprint—then turns out a hypnotic version that is more driven and direct for the dance floor, with robotic bass and epic reflective synth lines. it s a cinematic track with great analogue textures that goes back to the future. the last original is the excellent stay with me , a cosmic love song with breezy trumpets and dreamy disco vibes as well as soulful vocals. italo melodies and infectious percussion finish it off and make it an instant crowd pleaser.

cosi002 further documents an emerging, ex-germanic theory of perth dance music, typified by tracks built on techno’s stern compositional logic, but poly-functional and cross-disciplinary, wearing the stripes given to them by this most nonpareil of electronic music ecosystems.
the ep has both dance floor heft and mood-focused flexes. “the hunt” is a solarised, laser-sharpened and hi-hat driven garage/big room hybrid. 8-minute “m is for audio” is a workhorse techno slow burner with all the red-eyed melancholy of greats like “acid eiffel” and “deep burnt”, acid burnt and stinging at the mid-range. conversely, “rube” abounds with percussive warmth and ear-dancing patterns, as does “freshness and convenience”, a bastard union of dusty breaks and a hard funk bassline. the ep ends with ambient cyber walkabout “freetown”, peripatetic, matte-toned and pulsing with vital signs.

ess o ess are back home on not an animal, with a track that both continues and develops their recognisable motif. flamingoes and wombles and the blue oyster cult is as maniacal as the name may suggest, swamp rock, cosmic disco, techno and shamanistic vocals all play a part in a pleasingly out there confluence of styles that drives, spits and builds to an unhinged, but cohesive, finale.
