schuttle makes a sublime and sludgy debut with this cassette for paris/peckham label, panatype. all of the tracks are made using astronomical data in some way, a passion for the young newcastle-based producer over the years that he was putting the release together. predominantly a beatless record, and certainly intended to be listed to as a whole, schuttle uses the art of the loop to provide the listener with “an inner peace in outer space”

repress - without dl code - susso, aka bassist / producer huw bennett, creates music inspired by, and directly sampling, the magnificent sounds of the mandinka people, recorded during a recent trip to gambia. initially travelling with the aim of gaining perspective as a musician and to discover a new world of music first hand, huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artists, mostly belonging to the celebrated susso and kuyateh griot families.
the tracks are composed entirely from original source material, field recordings and huw’s talents as a multi-instrumentalist, performing tuned percussion from the region including the mandinka balafon, kutiringding drum, aswell drawing on his skill as a professional upright / electric bassist. the music produced has a contemporary electronic sound, whilst still paying homage to a traditional gambian aesthetic. keira (meaning peace) guides the listener through huw’s journey up the river gambia, being welcomed into remote dusty villages, where your people are the most important thing in life

raphael ray munnings is famously known as the band leader and singer of the mighty bahamian funk legends the beginning of the end, he is also a formidable solo artist in his own right with a clutch of sought after, rare 7- singles throughout the early to late 70 s as well as numerous appearances with his band. opportunity knockin from 1972 is an early one from ray, released on tk disco s alston imprint, it s often been a rare 45 and doesn t show up very often. opportunity knockin is channelling the usual sun-soaked vibes of his later material this single is a sweet one for summertime, breezy horn infused funk with tough drums and that caribbean vibe. the b-side is also a winner, sleep on, dream on is an uptempo slice of wah wah driven soul with a serious groove and a peace-loving, ecologist theme running through ray s vocals. sublime stuff, for real fans of funk and soul rarities! nab this rare 45 of caribbean soul, re-issued here in it s original 45 rpm format with the original alston label artwork. it s been re-mastered, re-pressed and made available again with the permission of tk disco / alston records, miami florida, usa.

for our next fina records release we welcome french native closed paradise… closed paradise has been on our radar for a while after hearing releases on fools & fables, kolour ltd & whiskey disco. his unique (and mainly vinyl only) productions have featured heavily in our sets over the last few years, if you are familiar with his vibe you’ll know his tracks have a certain french finesse, and these are no exception. so we are extremely happy to finally put this out and add closed paradise praise ep to the fina family.

olim in latin can be used to indicate a time in the past or in the future. it can mean ‘once upon a time’ and ‘someday in the future’. a name and a project to try to move away from trends and genres, by taking inspiration from the past but at the same time leaving it, moving forward to shape a different and more narrative sound. the first attempt to do so is recursively: an 8 track album, opening with a sentence from bunny marrett sampled from an old documentary about st paul’s and the jamaican immigration in bristol during the 80’s. inspired by those intro words, recursively is a journey born from many years moving around, packing and unpacking suitcases, leaving villages, finding cities,leaving friends and finding more, emigrating, integrating. it’s a story about an entire generation trying to find the peace somewhere, somehow, sometimes by repeating the same steps in a loop of actions which seem to be the same but ultimately never are. it’s a soundtrack of those feelings and at the same time a message of hope to continue the journey through the faith that the meaning is the infinite journey itself. an infinite loop masterfully represented in carol rollo’s illustration. a story to be continued.

delroy wilson the original ‘cool operator’ was also known to many as ‘teacher’. a title given to him as he unselfishly taught the up and coming singers including one youth dennis brown, the art and delivery of singing technique. delroy’s rich tone to his voice added a depth to any song that he chose to sing. delroy wilson (b.1948 kingston,jamaica) began his musical career at the school that was coxonne dodd’s studio one label. after a brief stop in 1969,which saw delroy working for producer sonia pottinger’s tip top label. again producing such hits including ‘it hurts’ and ‘put yourself in my place’. the 1970’s saw delroy wilson’s arrival at bunny ’striker ’lee’s door and what would result in a winning formula,scoring hit after hit. it is from this great period in delroy’s career that we have compiled this selection of killer tunes,cut with the drum and bass rhythm kings themselves sly dunbar and robbie shakespeare.such classis as ‘who care’ ,’can i change your mind’,’get ready’,’you must believe me’ and the timeless title track to this collection ‘here comes the heartaches’. an album of great tracks cut with ‘the hitmaker from jamaica’ bunny lee and his team. a match made in heaven….enjoy the set….

anno stamm is the revered 4/4 branch name of berlin’s lars stoewe. as anstam he has been at the forefront of dark beat science, touring extensively with the likes of moderat and thom yorke’s atoms for peace and has appeared at festivals ranging from mutek and ctm to sonar and dimensions. ‘annothek’ is his second ep for macro. the three tracks build on the same set of sound sources and offer three different views at their glowing core. elastic basslines pierce through a bed of sweet and warm chords, surrounded by sizzling noise percussion. definitely on the more introspective side, the three cuts offer a special emotional depth while maintaining a bit more than just enough oomph to get the action going. late night and early morning are the possible settings. it’s a declaration of tender love that comes with a gentle push towards the closest darkroom.

welcome to season five of the jazz jousters sessions. after four years of non stop album releases we thought we d take a few months time out to think and work out what we would do next this season. we decided to attempt another locations series since we are yet to take on some of the locations many of you have suggested via our updates pages and emails. so here we go...
mjm would like to present locations: usa, the vinyl and cassette edition as we continue to explore the sounds, influences and styles of jazz music in different regions of the world.
in this session we hear the result of each jouster as they each chose one or more jazz musicians from the united states and began to work with that sound and come up with an instrumental in their own style, just like in season four. however there was a twist, this time they were challenged to focus on jazz between the years of 1960 to 1969. see what you think of the outcome...

it’s hard to get a handle on nigerian musicians nash dodoo, charlie cuul and jonas caulley. in 1980 they released an album of face-melting gospel boogie as the bml chapels. and in the same year, calling themselves the beta yama group, they put out free love, a belated love letter to san francisco’s summer of love and an album altogether focused on more worldly concerns. free love is a small slice of haight-ashbury transported to the polygram studios in lagos. ‘te revoir’ is mamas and papas jamming with sergeant pepper’s beatles. ‘free love’ offers a respectful nod towards je t’aime-era serge gainsbourg. sure, ‘revolution’ gets hard and funky and ‘rain’ flirts briefly with a calypso reggae sound, but the majority of the album is cheesecloth and flowers in your hair. insanely rare – and worth buying for the freaky cover art alone – free love is a funky, reverb heavy call for love, peace and sweet, sweet loving. what more could you want from an album?

a bona-fide nigerian prince and probably the only musician to have ever played with fela kuti, miles davis and bob marley, eji oyewole combined african highlife with western jazz to create a hybrid so that was as smooth as it was funky. his first album, charity begins at home was an angry tirade against corruption in nigeria. me & you is his ‘relationship’ album, a brighter and happier set of songs that sees eji all loved up, presumably with the mysterious ‘cameleon’ featured on the cover. eji’s flute is no longer a strident voice raised in anger. instead, on ‘me & you’ and ‘i’m a dancer’ it is a playful line of seduction. on the wonky and woozy ‘eniafelamo’ his sax is a post-coital salutation. even the one political track, ‘long live nigeria’, is a loved up call for peace, progress and trust. chilled, assured and dexterious, me & you is a sophisticated showcase of eji oyewole’s chops. ‘this is the beginning of an atomic musical evolution,’ he declares on the cover. ‘brothers and sisters, stay cool.’

following his release on perlon as alter mahnn, collective member ion ludwig signs toi.toi s 4th release. the ep brings two tracks carefully chosen and crafted. rather than having the dance floor as a drive they are rather more mind driven, a very mature ep. not for you - this track, from the very beginning, manages to create a tension, a rather pleasant tension, a constancy is built and it does keep giving very slowly, building up to be an amazing jam suiting a dance floor as well as an inner moment of peace. are we for real brings a very slick groover. it brings a very delicate and extremely classy straight hihat leading the way at the forefront while the mind is grabbed by the musicality through a beautiful melody in addition to many hypnotic noises in and out.

best known as a jazz drummer and hip-hop producer, karriem riggins returns with headnod suite. the album is the follow up to 2012’s critically acclaimed debut alone together. with 29 instrumental hip-hop tracks, headnod suite places riggins’ beatmaking chops front and center. it’s a testament to why riggins is the producer of choice for artists like kanye west, common, erykah badu, and the roots.
