candido cameron was a cuban percussion maestro who had played with luminaries such as dizzy gillespie, buddy rich and count basie throughout his illustrious musical career which started in 1952. fast forward to 1979 and candido finds himself caught up in the disco boom that had engulfed his adopted new york city. feeling he could add his trademark quick-fire conga and bongo playing to disco s straight 4x4 syncopated rhythm he cut some records with legendary nyc label salsoul. the fruits of this partnership were 2 full length lp s and a handful of 12inch singles that changed the face of underground disco.

it’s now pretty obvious that disco influence has not only been powerful in western clubs. it has also influenced musicians all around the world, and west-indies islands are no exception to the rule. indeed, at that time in the caribbean territories, local musicians and producers seized the sound of their us counterparts, and make it their own, melting-up disco, funk, and boogie (even early rap) elements with some more traditional or local styles. apart from some obvious titles which made it to the charts, very few was known on these productions until recently. from an initial pre-selection of 40 tracks, favorite recordings and waxist teamed up to narrow down the actual tracklist. with no pretention to be exhaustive, this selection represents a tiny sample of a broader ocean of quality caribbean disco/boogie tunes. favorite recordings & waxist are very happy and proud to bring back lights on some of these rare tunes.

parages 009 is ojpb (known as bowly) first ep on this label, a side project oriented house and disco. the a side starts with « pénétrante », a disco house track, with classic bassline and nice chords groove. on the second track, its simoncino’s remix. the italian with a strong taste for chicago house, signed on mathematics, lies and more… he turns the track into a wild west tune with deep sounds and melodic lines keeping the groove.b side starts with a deep percussive house track, super melodic and really catchy with a detroit influence…..you got to pay your dues man. last one is a super catchy disco edit that will stay in your head and bring some dance moves that you didnt know of.

broken grooves are almost always present in arapus productions and pitfall is no different. with a trippy synth that goes all the way and effected voices to go along, this track rules the night and the whole a side.
two tracks found their way on the b side and their flavour is quite different. escape is a pure deep house gem, and a clear indication of arapus soulful influence. extremely danceable and super uplifting, this track brings the summer back. wasting on the other hand is dark and has a dirty broken tech groove. this track may seem toolish but it s a monster when it hits.

craig peyton was a mainstay in nyc jazz and dance music beginning in the 70s. from playing on dan hartmans -vertigo/relight my fire- to his work on boogie funk productions with daryl payne, he is one of the unsung heroes of the era where disco transitioned into house music. his drum machine and synth based cover of william devaughans -just be thankful- came out on profile records in 1983, a daring move for a white man trained on the vibes. he gives the jam a haunting and funky rework that has only escalated in popularity over the years. it has been bootlegged extensively while original copies remain quite elusive.
