2015 has been a huge year for dj-kicks, marking both 20 years of the series as well as our 50th release. but far from slowing down, we’re already looking ahead to another incredible mix from one of our favorite artists. over the past decade, seth troxler has become a visionary and authentic voice in dance music, his jovial personality cutting through the noise and continually playing by his own rules. growing up between detroit and chicago, his musical education carries enviable credentials, with his stepdad a local radio personality who championed the early sounds of house music. true to troxler’s character, the mix has a whimsical nature and a thoughtful and timeless narrative, bearing a tenacious episode for the dj-kicks series that gives a true insight into the man behind the well-preened moustache and cowboy antics.

luigi tozzi is a young roman artist just twenty-three years old but with a profound musical knowledge. his productions reflect the distinct musical style coming from the italian capital, a style purveyed by artists now considered icons within the international techno scene. its the direct link to this sound that aligns luigis music perfectly with the musical realm of outis music.

after making a great impression with its first ep, giant records serves up a second hot helping of house music from boss man grant dell, complete with fresh remixes by scottish techno stalwarts silicone soul. dell, also known as chicago transit authority, has been doing his do for 25 years now. as a dj he is at home in clubs in ibiza and barcelona as well as around the rest of europe, and is someone who always prefers to push his own brand of widely infused and influenced music than his own profile. once again here he comes up trumps with the emotive, glowing house cut ‘in your mind’. with a neat bassline and mid tempo house drums, subtle but effective synth smears add warmth and colour to the groove, whilst soul fuelled vocals add a real sense of personality. this is sure to get people grooving at any hour and comes with grant’s own space echo remix. as the title suggests it’s a more dubby and reverb rich affair with cosmic signifiers and sci-fi vibes pervading from start to finish. silicone soul need little introduction having been at the heart of real deep house and techno for decades on the soma label. their first remix is a darkroom dub - named after their own label - and is a seductively slo-mo and lazily unfolding house cut with languid synths that really suck you in. their lush hypnohouse mix is then a twinkling, late night bit of melodically rich deep house with starry skies twinkling above sombre chords. this is a patiently served but hugely alluring ep that is stuffed with plenty of tender feeling. one again then, both grant and giant have come up with the goods.

* you gonna dream - feat. byron stingily*, from french producer who and the vocal from byron stingily itself of his *it’s over* released on nervous records 1998. the wonderful tracks comes in two distinct versions: the first mix works off skipping percussion, a warm round sub bassline and uplifting vocals full of hope, love and joy. on the flip the * club mix* adds a tougher edge, taking us straight on to the dance floor of a new york basement club circa 1994, while the vocal (feat byron stingily from nervous record) keeps the bright and upbeat.

stix records is a sub-division of favorite recordings, recently launched with a first official single by taggy matcher birdy & nixon (stix033), who pleased us with two reggae-rocksteady renditions of the famous black keys. precisely specialized in the exercise of producing covers with a reggae twist, the new label presents his first album entitled *disco reggae*. many artists faithful to the stable of favorite recordings and its various sub-labels are invited for the occasion: the dynamics, blundetto, grandmagneto, 7 samurai, john milk or taggy matcher. all came and brought their respective touch to this first compilation, with among other things some of the rarest titles from their big single records’ years, but also 4 new and exclusive productions. each of them delivers a great disco-reggae version of classic hits by some artists as diverse as madonna, herbie hancock, justin timberlake, the commodores, the o jays, curtis mayfield, harry nilsson or sugarhill gang. whatever the genre or the period, nothing can resist their inventiveness and creativity, to the point sometimes we confuse between originals and covers. everything is remastered and cut at carvery records (uk), known for their expertise in caribbean and disco music. the vinyl lp comes in a deluxe version, housed in an old-school tip-on jacket.

a ship called misterio takes us on a journey to the darker and harder spaces of noon records. where the last releases have been more dreamy and funky, this ep is nothing but techno at its finest. a ship called misterio takes off from the very depths of dissonant frequencies and builds up into a massive rolling drum pattern, distorted hooks and a hi-hat thunderstorm. be warned: this track doesn t show any mercy. a true peak-time record and nothing but dynamite for the dance floor.

the fourth installment in the legwork records saga sees label heads lance desardi & leopold come together under the artist moniker legwork. for their first outing under the name they start with buck shot, a techno-soul chugger featuring a remix by the futurist himself, matrixxman. on the flip, the boys go in for a straight-ahead killer with mean 2 me and a more musical version of the same tune, key 2 me.

the mysterious dream lovers arrive on uber with the super mellow brasil. a tropical reggae disco tinged balearic shuffler, all loose percussion and soft guitars. reminiscent of studio in their heyday. abel from the redlight records crew dims the lights and strips the og back. layback and feel the sunshine on your eyelids. the second remix comes from maciek sienkiewicz of very polish cut-outs. a quirky almost off beat stripped back version bringing out the guitars and adding extra synths pads. uber warming us up with some balearic heat.

sonic ep is the second contribution of sawf to the modal analysis catalogue. the greek producer, and core member of the modal analysis roster, delivers a mind-blowing 4-tracker with a clear intention to interpret an industrial-noise aesthetic from a techno perspective. sonic#1 is a cut from the intro of sawf’s live set, offering a powerful combo of processed vocals and distorted soundscapes. sonic#2 comes as a long and stepping beast that creates the uncomfortable feeling of a horror movie soundtrack. on the b side, sonic#3 blends blurry vocals with rhythmic industrial elements on a breath-taking bass-line, while sonic#4 presents sawf’s charisma on impro-noise compositions. *sonic#4 was recorded at ‘sonic shelter studios’ in athens.

two paris legends reunite for the latest outing on the always fresh adult only label. owner chris carrier links up with his old pal dan ghenacia for this three-track ep, which includes a remix from german talent, diego krause. chris and dan last got together for adult only back in 2007, with their ‘tumble blur’ ep and they recently hit the studio together again to roll out two super dope slices of heads-down dance floor funk. as you might expect from two highly experienced veterans, the tracks on offer are both crisp, epitomising that classic house flow with a sprinkling of contemporary flavour. the 2nd degree bounces, whirrs and chirps all over the place while the 4x4 beat keeps the energy levels high. just a sin is a more serious cut, with a solemn presence and stuttered beats together with a hushed vocals giving it a mysterious feel. unison wax bossman diego krause powers up just a sin with his remix, putting a firm emphasis on the bassline, which is strong, murky and unrelenting. a deep, dark slice of groovy house for the after-hours crew
