just over a year ago cassy embarked on her largest and most personal project yet, her debut solo album donna , released on revered imprint aus music. since then, cassy has put out a string of remixes on powerplant, turbo, echoe and watergate, plus a track on muna s latest va. throughout this period, cassy has also been in the studio working on new material, the first of which to be released in september, and is titled cassy 004 . as the title infers, cassy is reawakening her self-titled imprint she created in 2006, and has had three previous releases until now. with no plan or set schedule, the remit was simply to release her own records, when the time is right, and the quality is high. the music always reflected the quirkier side to cassy s club tastes. and 004 continue in this vein. it perfectly encapsulates the sleek and hypnotic sounds of the harder end of her dj sets. the tracks are titled one and two , with cassy giving one a reshape to round off a trio of cuts aimed at the dancefloor.

naoki e-jima s disc shop zero record store in tokyo holds a special place in our hearts. since before idle hands was even established, when rooted records was king, the cosy, liberally stocked shop has served as a sympathetic outpost for bristol s rich culture of soundsystem music. over the years, naoki has championed all the best music to come from our fair city, from smith & mighty through to pinch and pev and on to the output from our own humble label. it s been a vital connection to help our music reach the right heads on the other side of the world, in turn providing a platform for our most treasured artists to gig and further the cause of the music we love. as a thank you for all the support naoki has shown bristol music over the years, idle hands has put together a special tribute 10inch of tracks that chime with his particular musical tastes, shining a light on some complementary gems that might have otherwise never seen the light of day. its also a chance to fill in the missing idle013 catalogue number – fortunately, the number 13 does not represent bad luck in japanese culture. on the a-side, the mighty (pun intended) rob smith takes to a track from outboxx s debut album, originally intended for a remix 12inch that never came to be. in his learned hands, lost soul becomes a shimmering stepper marked out by beautiful cascading arpeggios and of course plenty of fulsome bass, with arresting fragments of vocal drifting in and out of the mix for good measure. rob s status as a true legend of bristol music needs no explanation, but his presence here is furthermore because naoki is such a fan of his music. on the b-side, atki2 makes a welcome return to the label after bringing a classic ray of sunshine to idle hands on the second single we ever put out. as well as being a big release for us, it was apparently huge at disc shop zero, so it feels right to bring the effervescent hes royal to this 10inch release. with a sunny disposition at heart, these two tracks make sense sharing a 10inch, but it s even more fitting that they sit side by side as we doff our caps to a true hero of the global underground. thanks, naoki.

for our next fina records release we welcome french native closed paradise… closed paradise has been on our radar for a while after hearing releases on fools & fables, kolour ltd & whiskey disco. his unique (and mainly vinyl only) productions have featured heavily in our sets over the last few years, if you are familiar with his vibe you’ll know his tracks have a certain french finesse, and these are no exception. so we are extremely happy to finally put this out and add closed paradise praise ep to the fina family.

for its very first vinyl release after 2 years of activity in the digital realm, experimental ambient label arythmic records from strasbourg (france) did a rather bold choice by putting its hopes into a local techno artist well known for its open-mindedness and creativity: letherique. after over a year of various experiments, the best ideas were selected and compiled into a series of 3 eps, each one dedicated to a particular vibe. the first part is about the more synthetic and futuristic outcome. the second one will be rather dark and organic. finally, the third and last one will be about the more experimental and minimalistic remainder. taking from many influences way beyond the world of casual techno music, letherique ended up crafting unexpected techno tunes, usually starting with an ambient base on which he couldnÕt help himself adding beats in order to develop what he knew best. after years of activity in the dark, he needed something a little bit special to put into what he could proudly call his first ep as a testament of his passion for the infinite realms of the electronic music genre. these were the perfect fit.

following on from the success of the first astrophonica compilation, the mixmag album of the month-rated gradients, label head fracture delivers the action-packed cold & rain ep. this is fracture’s first solo ep on astrophonica and it’s been worth the wait with four tracks showcasing the londoner’s creative energy and attention to detail. as ever, the release comes packaged with artwork from utile creative. the ep is propelled by the title track, built around an irresistible vocal sample from featured artist inaya day. the original, 1997’s ‘hold your head up high’, featured day in full house diva mode delivering a positive message. for his take fracture hones in on a specific line, speeds it up, and chops it with trademark expertise until we’re left with something he admits feels a little more cold though no less powerful. propelling day’s voice forward are expertly diced breakbeats, rolling percussion, and synth stabs for a short but intense ride. completing the a side is ‘your time’, a no-nonsense rollout with 2 step drums, filtered breaks, and catchy basslines playing call and answer with gnarly melodies. you can’t put it better than the sample does: this is one for the junglistical massive.

sometimes you have to put out a recdord for yourself. i first heard the east of underground lp from malcom catto in the jazzman records office in around 2000, after a couple of years i managed to pick one up for $100 from a soundtrack dealer who did not know what he had. now there is a few bangers on the lp but i have always thought is was the ballads that deserve the shine, so after a chat with egon at now-again i managed to sort out putting my two favorites on 45 for that end of the night slowy. hopeflly a few of you will enjoy this one also.

before boogie funk had a resurgence in 2012, ruckazoid was dropping rare funk albums in 2004. his demos were floating around la, but it wasn’t until 2009 that breakbot remixed ruckazoid’s original “life’s fantasy”, which was later released in 2011 as an original track titled “fantasy” on ed banger records. fantasy became a breakout hit scoring a #1 single on itunes. in 2013 when daft punk released “get lucky” featuring pharrell, funk was officially back in the mainstream. those in the know knew breakbot & ruckazoid helped rekindle the funk flame worldwide. after all, the label ed banger is headed by busy p, and busy p managed daft punk. suprinsingly, ruckazoid did not tour with breakbot, opting to stay in the studio to record more albums. amazing lover being one of these albums, with love game becoming the lead track.

following his self titled lp, illa j sometimes known as “john regal” (born october 13.1986 in detroit, michigan) is a singer, songwriter, rapper, producer, multi instrumentalist. he takes us on a trip to his hometown detroit with his third solo album home. his last lp successfully took illa j out of his brother and hiphop legend j dilla‘s shadow to show he is in his own lane. yet, yancey still felt as though he was in a box labeled rapper. teaming up with producer calvin valentine, who entirely produced the album, home is illa j‘s first album to properly showcase the full extent of his vocal range to put him in the singer-songwriter conversation. the listener can feel the soulfulness of this lp through illa j‘s singing and valentines‘ smooth production.

since its release last year, the grammy nominated album louie vega starring…xxviii has reached unfathomable heights, after 8 single vinyl releases and two full triple set album releases, we still have one more up our sleeve. today, here we are in the third and final installment of the louie vega starring…xxviii vinyl album release series, this time taking it to another level with unreleased and lost mixes. when making an album there are usually way more than the number of songs allocated for the project. in this case there were over 50 songs and tracks created for the louie vega starring…xxviii album. vega has selected 14 unreleased and lost tracks from the recordings and put together dj friendly versions with these super talented artists involved: funkadelic, nick monaco & soul clap, kenny bobien, cindy mizelle, maphorisa, berita, wanda baloyi & kabomo (south african top talent), roberto roena (of the fania all stars), brutha basil, jesse jackson (blues rock artist), sara devine, luis salinas (argentinean guitarist), duane harden (song/hitmaker), & 3 winans brothers featuring the clark sisters. the packaging is lovely with an open gatefold huge picture of a mural painted by none other than richard wilson uk artist. mastering by the great walter coelho, for sonic perfection & pressing manufactured by optimal in germany.
