mere is a new project that began as a soundtrack and continues as an experimental, dark-ambient jazz group. guitar, drums and bass clarinet provide an intense and improvised journey into the abyss. the trio first came together to work on a soundtrack for a dutch tv documentary called visserman. having known each other for some time this was the first time they had combined together to write music and the name mere comes from the dutch word for more. each member adds a different influence to the sound, the modal finger picked guitar playing of thomas adds a sense of movement while gareth takes both folk and free jazz ideas to play against leos free rock influenced drum work. the tracks were recorded all in single takes with just a quick discussion of outline and tuning as a basic guide. gareth davis records on important, miasmah, sonic pieces, dekorder, home normal etc. collaborating with machinefabriek, steven r. smith, scanner, frances marie uitti, ryan teague, elliott sharp, ian hawgood and the like. leo fabriek releases on digitalis, home normal etc. and is also the drummer with the noise rock band julie mittens.

the mortimer trap is an epic 77min variation of morton feldmans for bunita marcus constructed by german experimentalist and techno icon thomas brinkmann and australian sound artist oren ambarchi. pulsating waves of claustrophobic ambience generated from who-knows-what patiently builds into a throbbing rhythmic pulse of gorgeous sonic density. since the 80s thomas brinkmann has experimented with sound, its textures and its construction methods. his custom built two-arm turntable on concept 1, the sampling of damaged records on klick and various experiments with carved-groove vinyl are just a handful of career highlights that mark brinkmann out as a true musical pioneer. oren ambarchi, primarily known for his solo guitar records for the touch label, has worked with a diverse array of artists such as keiji haino, fennesz, phill niblock, jim o rourke, voice crack, keith rowe and sunn 0))). ambarchi and brinkmann first worked together in in japan in january 2011 in a trio with mika vainio. the mortimer trap is their first collaborative work as a duo.

thomas hesslers ep is the first player through crepuscular shafts & sonic subways.. beware the trail. first track - lost - cements you into a vacuum of suffocating synths that precede a poundin kick.. you are propelled into a tunnel. the bridge of the track is a course in restraint, giving way to menacing drive & looping side sticks.. siren like washes takes hold, swirling & disorientating the listener. on the flip, - 12 channel madness - best conveys the tone and atmosphere of the release. the murky darkness & pace feels inhuman to the core, but not without infectious rhythm breakdowns with flavors of old & nu skool shuffle timbres. these tracks are also - tools - that do not sacrifice on complexity. the haunting synth washes carry us through but offer no comfort. insanity & intensity reaches catharsis but never overpowers the overall mix. - berlin movement - is the final track on the ep that affirms you are still inside the tunnel. the incisive hook lines impel you to find your way out. the kick is more subdued forcing you to go with the melody until the break & bridge lapses back & the restraint builds to hypnotic frenzy. a dry, howling wind prevails.. filtered and distorted. thomas hessler succeeds in taking us through his tunnel of contradictions: alluring, menacing, emotional yet coldly detached. listen up: you might not escape !

for all the wonderfully subtle shell-breaking he did on his full-length, mark e falls back on old, slow habits for his new single, >the day<. and welcomely, we might add. pitching things down to a basement lounge floor crawl, the midlands dj/producer wraps his always chugging kicks and snares in serpentine synth-bass, jazzy, tripleted hi-hats, and moaning, wordless soul vocals. its grasp is tantric�hinting coyly at ecstatic release, but never fully delivering. for the vinyl junkies that bought stone breaker and missed out on it the first time around (it was absent from that version), this release should be a no brainer. but >the day< isnt carrying all the weight here. a new track called >special fx< will have sample hounds�particularly those with a thing for classic electro-pop�salivating. and the oft imitated, never replicated prins thomas shows up on the flip for a (naturally) eleven- minute revamp of >the day<, livening up the bass and drum patterns, adding in strings, piano, guitar, organ, and ending up with something that totally could have emanated from a camaro at some point in the early seventies. (albeit, one owned by someone with interest in eleven-minute instrumentals.) it even has a fade out!

so addictive: the title says it all. this housey tune builds up with layers of digital swirls powered by a kickass beat. chopped up disco-feel vocal snippets create the dancefloor vibe of ?club lasers meet glitter ball?. we?re hooked but be warned - you?ll never get enough. starstruck: a cocktail of electro chord harmonies with a delicious shot of catchy oohs give this groove something to slam too. it?s disco audio waves roll up on the funky shores of vocal snippets with just enough white-crested synths to give this housey number dance-driven pleasures.

worst friends is ryan cavanagh and john paul jones (no, not that one) from brooklyn. they are also known amongst the beards as tom croose and slow hands. we actually suspect they are pretty good friends � making this sweet sweet music together and all � oh, and they just had a cool record out on oz-label future classic. the music sounds very unlike any short persons playing sports of any kind though slow and low is definitely the tempo. there is the beautiful balearic original, eric duncan gives us a psychedelic ride on the disco carousel and prins thomas channels the song through recently aqquired skills as a choirboy and 4 finger keyboards chords�. oh my�.

silky vocals, warm basslines, gentle guitar licks and a smooth melody � a perfect ode to a beautiful day. prins thomas kicks off the 12 inch with an epic 12 min long remix. eli escobar remixes night spot, a heart pounding dance floor scorcher and trap.avoid do a minimal disco remix of under the sun.

dj ageishi is like the sensei of japanese djs: a true legend and active since 1973, he can scoop from an incredible musical wealth of experiences yet has his ear to whats happening in the now. this mixture of knowledge and curiosity for the new also characterizes his debut on internasjonal with colleague dj akin, who left his mark outside of japan with a remix for brennan greens >900lb man<. rattling drum breaks from the funk end of disco are the backbone for a soprano sax lick slightly remiscent of coltranes >a love supreme< that floats on top of noise distortet sheets of synth before the >rain parade< makes a total turn ending with a comforting lullaby like rhodes melody. prins thomas boils it all down to a simmering slow dub remake, while mark e lets all the single ingredients patiently lets every ingredient from the original develop its full-bodied flavour before kicking up the heat.

our dutch counterpart onno is known for his dance floor mastery. his after school ep on upon you was a multifunctionalmover that could teach any lethargic raver a few aerobic moves. >hit me< is in the same league and is completely unsuitable for yoga and pilates, so hes succesfully targeted the blonde dance instructor once again. onno brings the a1 fatburner to a peak with his charming impertinence. thomas schuhmachers pimped version of this awesome rave stepper on b1 tugs and pulls at your pants dragging you kicking and screaming to the dance parquet, where you soon realize that you never want to leave, but for those of you that want to lose some weight also know that you always need to condition yourself and >ghetto talk< on b2 is the perfect bouncy tune for that hour or so on the treadmill.
