like many of the greatest italo-disco records, tony espositos 1983 double a-side je-na/pagaia is ridiculously rare. put it this way: if you fancy nabbing yourself an original copy, it will make a serious dent in your wallet. this welcome reissue presents both tracks in their original 12inch glory, mixed with clubs in mind by mariano boncaldo of klein & m.b.o fame. its the a-side thats arguably the pick of the pair, featuring as it does a balearic-friendly blend of dense, bongo-laden rhythms, tribal chants and delay heavy guitars. theres a bit more of a hazy disco bounce to pagaia, which sounds a little like a long lost tullio de piscopo record, all jazz-fusion scat singing, sunny horns and shuffling rhythms.

if youre going to launch a label, it pays to hit the ground running with your first release. thats exactly what the people behind falstaff have done with this impressive debut. it features tracks from longtime pals max d and hashman deejay. the formers track, shoegaze, continues the washington d.c producers recent trend of delivering tracks that defy easy categorization. this one is a blend of ghetto-tech, deep house and dreamy chords, with cut-up samples of various descriptions riding an urgent groove. hashman deejays samba is a little more orthodox, sitting somewhere between deep detroit techno and humid samba house. its a thing of rare beauty.

ocoeurs latest album a parallel life finds franck zaragoza showcasing his adeptness at fusing thoughtfully crafted melodies with twitchingly syncopated techno. in a recent interview berlin music portal kultmucke introduced zaragoza something of an idm prodigy and while thats a fair summation due to his preference for malleable beatwork and his use of heavily processed field recordings there is more there than simple glitchery. zaragozas melodies, while often shrouded in hazes of static, affect the cinematic minimalism of modern composition. these such comparisons put him stylistically hovering somewhere between the likes of arovane and max richter which is no meager feat. a parallel life aches, breathes, pulsates and is forever churning. it has a subliminal soul that is all too often a casualty of electronic music of this style. the vinyl lp includes a download code.

make no mistake, for vault series 15 the doors have been flung open to welcome a new act to the fold. theres very little known about mistake made. no records or releases exist to date, but they have impressed vault chief subjected enough to have them join the sequestered berlin-based crew. and in sublime compliance with the vault series creed, this debut effort from the shadowy outfit presents yet another set of functioning and frill-free dancefloor material, complete with a rusted-through hue of its own. on the a-side >wrist< jumps straight in with marching intent, complete with fidgety hat work thats both anxious and infectious. then on the flip, >ricochet< opens with field recordings tossed into a stormy concoction of ticks, hats and fuzzy atmospherics, teamed up here with one of those basslines that will keep you glued to the floor. >indec< then concludes in signature vault series style an ominous, growling number rattled with alarm bells and screeching, clangorous detail. its one of those monstrous slow-burners that leaves you wounded yet longing for more. all in all, a rounded first release from a new techno tour de force. this isnt the last we will be hearing from mistake made.
