in 1988, on the eve of a two decade civil war, somalia s authoritarian ruler siad barre launched punishing air strikes on the north of the country, known today as somaliland, in response to agitations for independence. the bombing leveled the entire city. barre targeted radio hargeisa to prevent any kind of central communication system that could organize a resistance. with the attack imminent, a few brave radio operators and dedicated vanguards of somali culture knew the archives, containing over half a century of somali music had to be preserved. thousands upon thousands of cassette tapes and master reels were quickly removed from the soon-to-be targeted buildings. they were dispersed to neighboring countries like djibouti and ethiopia, and buried deep under the ground to withstand even the most powerful airstrikes.

soul jazz records’ new space, energy and light is a collection of music by early electronic and synthesizer pioneers (from the 1960s through the 1970s), mid-1970s proto-new age gurus and 1980s guerrilla d-i-y cassette-era electronic artists, spanning in total over a near 30-year time frame. all of these artists used electronic advancements in music technology as a means of exploring not only space and the idea of the future, but also of looking inwards to the soul and of creating music in harmony with the natural world.

l atelier hit back to the roots for bloom roster with a killer groove to start things off, sexy, moving and one to get any floor going. jamie trench follows with a nod to the old school of 80s drum machines and twisted vocal hits, with a disco twinge on the break. oli furness refurns after appearing on the last shag this one following in the same suite, heavy drums, killer sampling and an absolute heater. ghetto chords are the new boys on the block here for rootsforbloom bringing up the b side with a jazz, piano infused hit. again anyone who knows the series will be all over this.
