oliver ho, producer of textural techno/noise music has collaborated with danny passarella, clothes designer and producer of cinematic synth explorations to create multi. coming in four parts, it is an exploration of gender and growth, moving between the superficially binary genders, creating new identities through this process.

nyc producer, one half of point break, and dusk notes co-founder, cory james, will drop his latest ep, the home treatment, via behzad et amarou records on december 2. the home treatment will be the second release on behzad et amarou records (a.k.a. bear), which was launched in early 2015 by french duo, and concrete residents, behzad & amarou. the four tracks on the home treatment present a dark, atmospheric sound, bookended by textural pads, haunting ambience, and galloping rhythms.

london-based producer guy andrews is renowned for creating textural electronic music, combining influences from post-rock, techno, ambient and afrobeat. after releasing on hemlock, hotflush and pennyroyal, scoring for photographer nadav kander, and remixing massive attacks robert del naja, he makes his houndstooth debut with in autumn arm’. on the title track, a simple guitar melody falls melancholically over a bed of synth loops and string ensemble, while snares and thundering drums meld with distortion to heighten the tension. let your shadow decide is the a-sides darker, downbeat counterpart, opening with tremolo strings and a weighty bass-line, while emphatic drums build toward the tracks climax. although seemingly disparate, guys use of wall-of-sound noise and softer strings is skilfully mixed, carried forward by the stark guitar lead.

next up on resopal label is romanian producer ceparu. on his haloo nafar ep he treated to an array of textural atmospheres, intricate percussion lines and penetrating low-end tones, all instilled with mind-bending complexities to perfectly capture the essence of his sound.

opening up with the deep space atmospherics of quiet life the album immediately transports you to another world. the title track is then a melodically lush and uplifting affair with curious synth patterns ebbing and flowing beneath crisp percussion. tracks like we search for answers combine organic, wooden textures with more synthetic and trippy synth sounds that are as far away from your standard sample packs as can be imagined. across the course of the album there are dark, moody and emotive pieces like worship (previously released in extended form on the mdl02 single) featuring qzen who reads a poem by patience agbabi in tantalising fashion as well as heavyweight, dubbed out techno groovers like shadow theory. make it true (of which seth troxler will be releasing an extended edit on his play it say it label, complete with high profile remixes) is another great collab featuring the vocals of jojo de freq, and the track itself is a harmonious, radiant house jam that is humid and human in equal measure. the otherworldly, snaking feel free again showcases berkson & what s ability to coax alluring emotions out of their machines and closer logan five wraps things up in suitably spangled, textural fashion. despite the fact much of this album will work on a dancefloor in the hands of the right dj, there s an invention and musicality to it that renders the whole thing hugely listenable away from the club. a testament to berkson & what s analogue invention and fluid ideas, keep up appearances really is a master electronic oeuvre.

badmotorfinger got lost amid the blockbuster success of nevermind and ten (all were released around the same time). but the fact is that, though they re all great records, badmotorfinger is much less accessible by comparison. not that it isnt melodic, but it also sounds twisted and gnarled, full of dissonant riffing, impossible time signatures, howling textural solos, and weird, droning tonalities. its surprisingly cerebral and arty music for a band courting mainstream metal audiences, but it attacks with scientific precision. part of that is due to the presence of new bassist ben shepherd, who gives the band its thickest rhythmic foundation yet and, moreover, immediately shoulders the departed hiro yamamotos share of songwriting duties. but its apparent that the whole band has greatly expanded the scope of its ambitions. and badmotorfinger fulfills them, pulling all the different threads of the bands sound together into a mature, confident, well written record. this is heavy, challenging hard rock full of intellectual sensibility and complex band interplay.

already a mainstay in the scene with admired releases on brother label poker flat, and of course connaisseur, patrick chardronnet returns with a wonderful 2 track ep on audiomatique. a delightfully trippy, post-minimal adventure, ‚piper‘ raises the brow for chardronnet, dropping the big room synths this time in favour of a very organic, low-slung addictive groove. sparse, tricky percussion underpins the headsdown late night vibe, as a drifting ensemble of mystic vocals and haunting horns unfolds over 11 minutes. enchanting, mesmeric and deeply spaced, this reduced-percussive foray explores chardronnet‘s more hypnotic side... a priceless cut of of hybrid house from a modern master. on the b side the driving, textural chimes of ‚dropout‘ ensnare the listener into another beautiful and mysterious world. solid-state, bass-led percussion and crisply-cut percussive fx remain subdued whilst an epic, swirling synth landscape weaves its dreamy tale. suggesting moments of real drama, yet all the while maintaining an addictive, slow burning vibe, its a an amazing journey into this producer‘s remarkable, inimitable sonic world.

loke rahbek returns with his fifth album under the croatian amor alias with love means taking action, recently premiered at the 2016 edition of berlin atonal where it was considered by many as one of the festival highlights. although not as harsh and abrasive as previous albums, such as genitalia garden or last years the wild palms, rahbeck still manages to execute a polarising opus, comprised of short ambient journeys which incorporate various sonic influences and clever use of sampling outside of his usual employment of textural noise treatments. field recordings, immaculate synthesis and emotional vocal snippets are interspersed throughout this exploration of love and human connection. the title track, in particular, could well be one of our favourite songs this year. quite simply: breathtaking.

boom bip was one of the canniest underground beat producers around before he hooked up with gruff rhys of super furry animals to create the fascinating neon neon project, which took as its focus automaker john delorean and what his car (and charisma) meant to the 80s. bbs return to the solo realm finally came on 2011s zig zaj, which has more in common with neon neon than with his early solo joints. (features for cate le bon and franz ferdinands alex kapranos, among others, certainly fit in.) as always, its impeccably produced - hollon has only gained in proficiency and maturity as a producer. but compared to seed to sun or blue eyed in the red room, whose fascination with sound was positively contagious, zig zaj sounds like an overly safe record, the type that most producers would avoid if they wanted to keep innovating. heavily influenced by rock and 80s new wave, similar to neon neons stainless style, its impressions are largely textural, and as talented a producer as boom bip has become, zig zaj sounds more like a rehash than the entirely new recipe that music fans are undoubtedly looking for.
