in a new transatlantic partnership, uk label secret reels and washington, dc imprint better listen records have teamed up for a run of collaborative records. the joint brand, secret listen, combines the labels in sound as well as in name. imagine the lush, pensive and moody deep house tones of secret reels joining with the sample-heavy disco soul leanings of blr. secret listen vol. 1 takes two artists each from both rosters for the first amalgamation. the -secret side- hosting english producers harry wolfman and chocky, while the listen side invites sune and vitamin d of high hat appreciation society and the newly founded honey butter records to the affair. it s a v/a release with a variety of offerings and flavours. wolfmans floozy sits first in the record as a bright and whimsical flute-led morsel, while chockys inner disco is a cerebral, loopy cut. on the flip, sune provides some exquisite rhodes action in his groovy midtempo effort, glidin, and his swedish compatriot closes out the affair with the bittersweet lately.

lyon-based beatsmith ethyène has patented a certain style of mid-tempo house music applying a french touch aesthetic to disco, r&b and hip-hop sample references. through releases on longtime underground favorite kolour ltd and upstart labels like kyoku, as well as contributions to his own moonrise hill material, the frenchman has quickly built a sought after discography. his collaboration with better listen comes at an interesting time, as he seems to really be refining his sound, maturing sonically and honing the synthesis of the aforementioned influences to something nicely unique. the playin with fire ep is a deliciously bittersweet four track affair. the a1 slot sees e joining forces with his homie, the much acclaimed folamour, for the superlative why my love. meanwhile, loneliness of the shadow dancer- continues the r&b cream vibes, combining a classic head-nodding hip-hop flip with a soul chorus. the b-side gets a bit moodier, with the title track climatically building on hypnotically deep riffs and vocals and i sold yayo to buy kicks serving as the bob james-esque closer. the package is a cohesive reflection of a pensive and slightly anguished mindstate, with boom bap cultural influences and his familiar philadelphia streets functioning as the canvas. dont be surprised if this record serves as a point of stylistic elevation for the young producer, with plenty more of this new ammunition in the chamber. and you know the saying: if you play with fire, you might turn into a scorching hot phoenix.

welcome to the rocksteady sound from jamaica. towards the end of 1965 some say due to the extreme heatwave that was hitting the island the people that followed the sound system dances demanded a slower beat so they could still move and groove to the all night musical night affairs. so the jerky ska swing was slowed down to a steady beat that also allowed the songs cut at this time to shine throgh. so sit back and enjoy the tunes that rocked this islands between 1966-1968 the rocksteady sound that hit that town..

ever since we heard never gonna leave you from leipzig boys m.ono & luvless - it was an instant classic. originally released on o*rs on 2012, and with the kind help of label owner filburt, we’re thrilled to be able to give this timeless tune a second platform in 2016 to shine once again.
on the flip, the boys come correct once again with losing memory - a fresh new joint that was again, love at first listen for us.

this is volume two of a two volume set from edit master gay marvine justly called dance floor favorites. these are some of his most sought after unreleased edits that are known for their strong reaction on the dance floor. they cause an instant heat. his perversity shines through the extreme tempo shift of “jungle fever” lifting it up into pure ecstatic dance floor action, with all the eroticism of “french kiss” and all the spanish funk groove of barrabas. we could to listen to the hypnotic “goodnight” for hours on end, finally seeing light on vinyl. gay marvine’s “what’s happening bro” is not an edit per se, it’s what happens when you cross that line and it becomes house. this is perhaps his greatest tribute to moodymann and his sets at better days,hotbox and la dolce vita. the ep ends with the ever dirty “bump man” and gay marvine’s unique feverish take the needy anthem. gay marvine might just be the frankie knuckles of edits, because his music will keep you warm in the cold, a true musical heater.

africa is not a country. we in the west often refer to african music but what is that exactly? it could be myriad, almost unimaginably different forms of music that bear little relation to each other, as after all africa is a vast continent that is larger than the united states, australia and the whole of europe combined. these four tracks showcase some of those different forms of music from across the continent. there is some cosmic synth drenched proto-house, an afro-beat call to arms, a hypnotic juju workout and a rough and ready, relentless lo fi west african banger. all proceeds will go to human rights justice group, nigeria.

mysterious hardware tinkerer stephan stl laubner is back with a 3 track + locked groove ep on the london based imprint mutual friend recordings entitled listen up! mind puzzlin is exactly that with a luscious lead line that will twist your head accomponied by stls signature rough and overdriven percussion. smile function has a more ominous tone with repeated guitar plucks that plant themselves into your consciousness. stl builds the groove expertly whilst retaining an other-worldly feel to the track. wrong is a real groover with a growling bassline accomponied by weird and wonderful interwoven patterns coaxed out of stls synths. the locked groove, titled listen up! loop is a nice bonus for the more adventurous dj out there.
