messrs david van der leeuw and luigi vittorio jansen have been making waves with their beesmunt soundsystem project, a lauded club night and dj outfit thats grown into a behemoth, breaking out of the amsterdam dance music scene in which they made their name. now the duo are returning to pets recordings with their new raindance ep.

the first musical scale on apiafo leans towards raw funk with a sound similar to the famous 70s bands, l orchestre poly rythmo de cotonou and el rego. funk, is the skeletal structure of this record, and provided the opportunity for peter to invite his uncle, roger damawuzan - the famous pioneer of the 70s soul scene – on two tracks. their collaboration on *pas contente* is a highlight on this 100% analog album. apiafo was entirely recorded, mixed and mastered with old tapes and vintage instruments.

die frage ist sicher nur rhetorisch: does anybody wanna funk? fragt paulo mendonca, und wer den schweden mit portugiesischer herkunft kennt, weiß: sein funk funktioniert! nach hunderttausenden verkauften tonträgern und tourneen mit größen wie tina turner gibts ein wiederhören mit dem großen funk-gitarristen.
18 jahre lang veröffentlichte paulo keine alben mehr, er trat zwar noch live auf, widmete sich aber sonst ganz seinem verlag in london. doch dann juckte es ihn wieder in den fingern. er begann, songs für ein neues album zu schreiben und aufzunehmen. das resultat ist ein feuerwerk aus funk und rock, handgemacht und sehr groovy.

after releasing their debut ep on soweso, beesmunt soundsystem strikes back with a new record. the all day ep shows the diversity of the amsterdam based duo, which ranges from a bit darker deep house to a more groovier and techier sound. the ep includes a remix from the argentinean artist seph who has released on labels such as harry klein records, cityfox and dumb unit. we are proud to deliver such a strong ep and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!

first up is tabou for the people by sofrito specials featuring l barrabas which twitch edited for his dj sets a couple of years back. the lovely people at sofrito kindly gave permission for it to be included on this release. its a relentlessly driving slab of 4/4 afro funk with horn explosions. next up is the 10th and final track in twitchs cumbia series. the first 8 were released on japans lets get lost label and the missing number 9 is being saved for a future release. colombias cumbia was born out of african influences. this track is based around a sample from colombian cumbia legend andres landero and is an attempt to fuse traditional cumbia sounds with up to date production styles. the end result is a slow motion hypnotic cumbia retaining the haunting melancholia inherent in the original sample. leading the aa side, twitch passed a wild highlife song by ghanas atakoru manu to glasgows super talented auntie flo (whose highly recommended future rhythm machine album recently saw a release) to play around with. auntie flo cut it up and added additional drums and bass to come up with this euphoric modern highlife groover

all the way from new zealand to the urban landscapes of berlin, simon beeston is a man who likes diversity. this is not just evident in his choice of residence, but also in his musical output. following an ep on highgrade digital and a track on our various artists vol. vi record, simon now presents dusty back room, his first solo 12inch release on highgrade. the ep opens with the title track dusty back room, a track of strings and stabs, and a sound not exactly typical of previous highgrade releases. but when the music comes with such compelling energy and provocative atmosphere, were prepared to make an exception. new zealand meets berlin as we cast an eye over green landscapes and ocean swells, while the bumpy groove intoxicicates us with its magic spell. that simon beeston is a man of great contrast is clearly evident on the b-side with neon cringe and cymbolic. the percussive heat of the club brings us back from the organic landscape of his homeland and into the neon lights of the night. neon cringe resonates with a healthy dose of acid pump, while cymbolic provides a bass driven journey complete with cut up vocals and blistering cymbal rolls. this is a release that richly deserves its round number: highgrade number 70. especially with the addition of the bonus digital track tough luck, another highlight all of its own.
