the no ones ist ein norwegisch-amerikanisches quartett, bestehend u.a. aus mitgliedern von i was a king (frode stromstad), the minus 5 (scott mccaughey) und r.e.m. (peter buck). auf ihrer ersten 4-track-ep huldigen sie den vokalen harmonien und sonnig-psychedelischen sounds der 60er jahre, sowie inhaltlichen themen aus umwelt und geschichte. als gastmusiker sind steve wynn und patterson hood (drive-by truckers) mit an board.

trotz zahlreicher nebenprojekte wie alexis taylors about group, joe goddards the 2 bears und einem vollgepackten tour-kalender, lassen uns hot chip nach ihrem erfolgs-album in our heads vom sommer 2012 auch in diesem jahr nicht im stich: die neue single dark and stormy erscheint am via domino! der typisch leichtfüßige hot chip-sound trifft auf eingängig groovende bass-lines und den soulig-melancholischen gesang alexis taylors. dabei herausgekommen ist ein elektrisierender dance-pop-song, der spätestens mit dem aah-ooh der bridge ganz fest im ohr hängen bleibt.

jamie lidell besinnt sich auf seine solofähigkeiten als multiinstrumentalist hinter laptops und analogen synthesizern und liefert ein superbes album mit einflüssen von george clinton, cameo, mtume, new jack swing und bobby brown ab. bereits die teasersingle, das bassmonster *what a shame*, steht seit wochen in den top 10 der deutschen collegecharts und erhält von der fachpresse die prädikate best new track (pitchfork) und *a post-dubstep drunken monster of a track* (stereogum). das jazzthing ehrt jamie mit einer titelstory. nach kooperationen mit cristian vogel (als super_collider), simian mobile disco, beck oder grizzly bears chris taylor und lebensstationen von berlin bis new york, hat der brite nun sein neues zuhause samt studio im traditionsbrennpunkt nashville aufgeschlagen.

in advance of the release of dapayk & padbergs third full-length sweet nothings - this time round on stil vor talent - the experienced duo are teasing us with the fluffy cloud ep, which showcases three of the album’s many diverse highlights, while keeping the vinyl lovers happy. the a-side bears the lps title track >sweet nothings<, on which dapayk & padberg’s sound takes a turn as they come knocking with a deep but forceful groover, whose distorted high-hats and trancey synth stabs create a vibe both euphoric and weirdly subdued. the lyrics, moreover, emphasise the duality at the core of many dapayk & padberg tracks as the latter ponders ‘you’re good for me - you’re bad for me’. showing another of the duo’s many facets, ‘backyard’ enchants thanks to mystical lyrics sung beautifully over a deep quasi-dubstep structure. marking the ep’s mid-point, the atmospheric song shines through intricately crafted fragility and is the perfect contrast to the previous and following track, while leaving a strong desire for more stuck in the listener’s mind. on the b-side, ‘fluffy clouds’ does quite the opposite to what its title suggests - rather than being a soft little piece, we are treated to big-room techno fodder à la berghain. a skeletal framework of heavy kicks, dark pads, white noise and dense metallics works relentlessly underneath a cold spoken word, proclaiming >not human, not animal - just a body in motion<. machine funk par excellence.

bedroom community broadens the scope with their newest release: en garde by puzzle muteson, a mysterious, intimate record by a fearless songwriter and lyricist from the windswept isle of wight. arranged and produced by collaborators and labelmates nico muhly and valgeir sigurdsson, en garde is a strange, comforting and alarmingly personal record. driven, spare lyrics are hoisted high by vocals of steady, sturdy tremble. each tune swells with plush guitar pluck in a sea of orchestration and electronics. recorded in the greenhouse studios in iceland, the album collects puzzle muteson s odd and beautiful stories - about love and horses, rust and polar bears, heartbreak and birds. puzzle s songs are curious sounds from a troubled heart and his lyrics are urgent and open, striking a note with their vulnerable memories. i was once a horse is an unforgettable song about nostalgia. the first single and title track, en garde , pits puzzle s longing against waves of dense strings and jagged rhythm, while perspex disguise sets his naked, translucent vocals against shimmering piano that refracts off epic chords. in flamingo head he sings, i left your house. you let me. i left you ugly , buffeted by guitar and distant murmurs. not a single thing could take this magical sight. i ll find you still , he sings in medusa , the story of a man tracking down a lost love. like many bedroom community recordings, en garde takes an unexpected and unique voice and elevates it out of any easily discernible pocket. puzzle muteson could be folk or something completely different - instead he s an intense stranger from the isle of wight - at once both familiar and unfamiliar. en garde heralds a haunting and essential new voice, beautiful, earned and yearning
