max essa returns to is it balearic..? home to some of his more balearic moments most notably the epic panorama suite. the a side is dovodah! which begins with some nu-med atmospheres and acoustic guitar conjuring up 80s italian beach parties. the loose percussion and a heartfelt vocal (calling the unmistakable sound of dovodah!) carry you along before dropping into an early 90s italian progressive vibe. genuinely a real post sunset bomb.

finally the dudes behind the fantastic hell yeah recordings step out into the limelight on their own with their debut ep of on golf channel. and what a debut! tracks range from blissful, boogie influenced house music (adriatic bolt) to the 1992 style primal scream psychedelic chugging banger (quando) via sunny acid (quiet force) and deep emotional vocal led ambience (i don t care who you are). just as you d expect from the amazing sounds their label has put out over the years, this ep is uncategoriseable in the best possible way we look forward to hearing more from the aptly titled balearic gabba sound system, this is just an aperitivo, or is it a selection of antipasti. either way, it leaves you ready for the next course. golf channel every time!
is it balearic? latest offering is from klik records man glass coffee. disclosures is a hypnotic slice of european deep house. laid back electric pianos and marimbas layered over a tight house groove. dance naked the second track follows the same kind of pattern upping the tempo slightly,building slowly towards a deep bass drop and arped string line. again more trademark layers. full on dancefloor action. the b-side brings one of the greatest italian house producers ever to iib. don carlos remix is really something special. a relentless subby double bass sounding b-line relentlessly underpins this delightfully atmospheric excursion into deepness. the coyote remix slows down the pace and dons its flip flops for a little tropical shuffling. iib hitting the spot again.

brilliant new balearic house ep from copenhagens music for dreams label. the opening track came to life when two danish djs - mads dalholt and zimino - made their own remixed version of al jawalas *go east* for playing out. mfd label head kenneth bager heard it, loved it, tested it out on his coma club dancefloor and it drove the crowd nuts with people literally screaming for more rewinds of this pumping horn-blasting oriental in-your-face party track. if you are a fan of acid arab and 80s leo mas/afredo style amnesia dancefloor madness then this one is for you. on side b we have the debut track from mads dalholt and partner landers - *zengo* is a sexy uplifting house groover with spacey keyboards, afro vocal hooks and a lively sax. followed by a second landers/dalholt cut, the slower more balearic *aelba* is built around a simple melodic guitar riff with some mellow xylophone bringing a warm sunshine feel. great debut for the young danes.

hot new release from sunkissed recordings celebrating italian synth pop hero mike francis aka francesco puccioni. back in the 80s, francis elegant electronic style and smooth rich vocals provided a perfect backdrop to nights dancing on the sand and in clubs throughout the mediterranean and his popularity continues today amongst the balearic cognoscenti. this ep features the fantastic in-demand club mix of *features of love*, a funky pop-soul opus washed with lush synths, lazy guitars and dreamy vocals plus the sought-after long 12 inch cut of *survivor*, a gorgeous slice of blue-eyed soul with a strong dancefloor sensibility. flip over for big cosmic play, the magnificent 12 inch version of *body thrill*, a bass-heavy chunky instrumental with an art of noise feel followed by francis beautiful laid-back cover of the bill withers classic *lovely day* and lastly the heavenly hypnotic *on and on*, a little-known gem from the b-side from a rare 12 inch. a great package!
i-boat captain returns to iib with a real gem of a tune. major spam is a chugging nu kraut dub disco bomb. driving drums and relentless bassline wrapped up in swirling synths and delayed vocals. almunia beef up the tempo and the kick, adding their trademark guitar melodies. tiedye turn major spam into an big piano balearic house monster ready for some hands in the air moments. finally on the remix our friends up north last waltz create a beautiful lush disco synth chug out. the extra track on the b side poly punk is a slo mo acid treat. squelching 303 underneath a delayed picked guitar and a soaring pad. balearic acid dub style.

review: japans 9dw release their first track for is it balearic..? right on is a super chilled loopy slo mo disco gem. touches of soft acid and boogie bassline make this a certain for the more discerning dancefloor. the mushrooms project remix creates an ever growing tribal dubby trip with what sounds like a jews harp thrown in for good measure. mesmerising. the b side features a track that has been an iib favourite for a couple of years since it was heard live in loop tokyo. this slowave almost out of sync techy chugger is not like anything else. evolving with analogue synths and stabs to become a heads downs stomper. international man of mystery man power adds man power to the track and creates a slightly darker journey into synth land
is it balearic drop a 10 inch slice of acid house perfection from one of the true masters of the genre in foolish felix dickinson! *ousana* grows slowly over a driving house beat as warm synth pads and synth leads take the track along nicely with a subtle acid line until the bassline drops. a vocal refrain joins the groove seductively cooing *i want to take you home* over the acid layers that develop in deeply hypnotic fashion. straight into the basement. on the flip coyote take the tempo down, bring out the percussion and create a balearic acid stomper. bleeps dubbed out vocals all swirl around the percussive rhythms then the acid line drops subtle and reminiscent of a certain acid house classic. early doors or at the beach bar for this mix.
