Having spent far too long fiddling around with re-edits, Bedmo Disco Records enters the world of original production with an EP of synth-heavy B-funk (the B stands for Bedmo) from studio pals AWON and BEDMO DISCO.

Inspired by a mix of original boogie and electrofunk dubs, vintage synthesizers, contemporary house/disco blends and classic ‘80s electro, the four tracks were recorded in a two-month period of intense activity at Bedmo Disco’s North Street Sound studio and Awon’s Summer Hill base in Totterdown, Bristol. The results have been tried, tested and tweaked to offer maximum dancefloor pleasure.

So what’s on offer? AWON steps up first and delivers two tracks that typify his production style – a mix of original New York boogie flavours and contemporary production techniques. Opener “Startime” layers cut-up scat vocals, hustling guitars and dubbed-out, D-Train-ish synths over a killer analogue bassline and snappy drum machine beats. To our ears, it’s irresistible; so far, dancefloors seem to agree.

“Good Lovin” sounds like Tiger & Woods making original electrofunk – all looped-up vocals, rubbery basslines, twinkling chords, and a rush inducing, E’d-up breakdown. Pure pleasure.

Flip for two contributions from label owners BEDMO DISCO. First is “Illusion”, a breathless chunk of shuffling voodoo disco that’s propelled forward by a monster analogue bassline, drum machine percussion and a nagging, ‘80s electro melody. With dubbed-out synth flourishes and trippy vocal flourishes, it’s a 116 BPM darkroom boogie chugger. In the words of Paul Daniels: “that’s magic!”

The EP is completed by “Boogie Down Dub”, a 2012 remake of an in-demand track that first appeared on a promo video for the Big Chill Bristol. Described by one DJ as being like “Yello doing electro-boogie”, it’s driven forward by another relentless synth bassline and cut-up vocal stabs. It is, of course, well dubby.

So there you have it: the definition of “B-funk”. Have a listen, play loud and let us know what you think. We won’t bite.
