Christian and his band also apply their open-minded jazz attitude to the minimalist house throb of Groove La Chord by the Stockholm-based Aril Brikha. A crescendo of liquid beats and feverish drums, the track builds to a breathless carnival rush, then sinks back to pure pulsating rhythm again. Magnificent.

The first release from Christian Prommer’s new Drumlesson album Drumlesson Zwei takes the Munich-based DJ and producer’s inspired fusion of techno and jazz, digital and analogue, to a new level of excellence. Christian’s Drumlesson Vol. 1 album, released in 2008, featured instrumental jazz versions of legendary electronic tracks by Derrick May, Kraftwerk, Josh Wink and more. Now the Munich-based collective return with a second volume of electro-organic cover versions, again covering a dazzling range of styles and sources from Carl Craig to Laurent Garnier, from Jean-Michel Jarre to Kruder and Dorfmeister. The album is a rich tapestry of moods, flavours and textures, but the first 12″ release proves Christian has not forgotten his schooling in the dancefloor dynamics of house and techno. Jaguar Part 2 is one of two versions on the album of Jaguar, the legendary techno classic by DJ Rolando and Underground Resistance’s Mad Mike Banks. Relentless, restless and layered with rippling waves of rhythm, this powerful reinvention already feels like a massive dancefloor anthem. “A classic Detroit techno tune,” says Christian. “It never fails, it gets me going every time. We did two versions - part one I like to call the ‘White Stripes of jazz’ version because it’s really rocking, just drums and bass and not much more. The second part is more of a Balearic-goes-Middle Eastern dance anthem with a lot of prepared piano, guitar tracks and drum layers. That really works well on the dancefloor, it’s a real killer tune for me to play when I DJ.” On the same 12″, Christian and his band also apply their open-minded jazz attitude to the minimalist house throb of Groove La Chord by the Stockholm-based Aril Brikha. A crescendo of liquid beats and feverish drums, the track builds to a breathless carnival rush, then sinks back to pure pulsating rhythm again. Magnificent. “That’s one of my all-time favourite records in simplicity and magic,” says Christian.
