throbbing gristle gelten heute zu recht als die wichtigsten vertreter der klassischen industrial music. die band ging aus der aktionskunstgruppe coum transmissions (ct) hervor, die etwa ende 1969 von cosey fanni tutti und genesis breyer p-orridge gegründet wurde. 1974 stieß der im jahr 2010 verstorbene designer und techniker peter sleazy christopherson zu ihnen, im jahr darauf chris carter. zum 40. jahrestag seiner erstveröffentlichung wird am 03.11.2017 -the second annual report- als limitierte edition auf weißem vinyl im original packaging inklusive downloadcode erneut veröffentlicht werden.

siince the release of his debut album, substantial, in 2004, volker bertelmann – aka hauschka – has, slowly but surely, earned a remarkable reputation as a purveyor of imaginative, distinctive, prepared piano music. this isn’t, to be fair, a heavily populated field, but it’s one he’s made his own, and while some might have dismissed his work early on as a novelty, bertelmann has proven himself to be uncommonly inventive, coaxing ever more unprecedented, euphonic sounds and rhythms out of his instrument. even so, on what if – which finds him adding player pianos (also known as pianolas) to his armoury – bertelmann expands his range even further, defying expectations and delivering what is without doubt his most ingenious album yet.

after 9 years of silence, here’s the 11th album from the unclassifiable brussels-based duo. with their usual tamping drums (just mention the two parts of “the decision to exist” or “same area”, led by a ferocious 808), a regular bass guitar hammering, some bare minimum poor voices, threatened violins, skinbound flute and oboe here and there, a distorted furious piano everywhere and finally some tiny cautious optimism (the extra-human guitar in “enough slaps”), the whole is carefully assembled in order to obtain an accurate picture of life on earth. “pain” and “pleasure” are different aspects of the same mental construction.

where his previous effort, 2014s *the hollow organ*, dealt in dense, distressed sonics, *olympic mess* is younger responding to a period spent engaged with loop-based industrial music, dub techno, and balearic disco. these musical references, all of which can induce hypnotic states and feelings of euphoria, inform ten evocative aural landscapes which unfurl over the course of an hour and act almost as a counterpoint to the turmoil that spawned them.

hrdvsion may not be the first act we were actually checking out for an irr output but we are not irritated that we found it. with i can t exist our canadian friend successfully strikes the balance between deep housyness and accelerated departure. if you turn the piece of plastic around you find a more typical hrdvsion track celebrating the same magical atmosphere. last but definitely not least the b2 is a fusion-remix by ada that insists on being played in the sunshine.
