2023 repress - dj koze doesnt aim for technical perfection for its own sake, but rather to serve the purpose of giving birth to great music. on his debut >rue burnout ep< from his own pampa label, he plays with finesse and sophistication, and implicitly understands the importance of subtlety, leading from dreamy and restrained parts to a noisy frenzy at the end.

!! new koze !! seeing aliens unquestionably is a banger, its bass riff snaking around your body like a python, its high-drama strings, pianos and outbursts of noise designed for maximum crowd pressure release. but, again, it sounds like nothing else, and its dynamics and twists unfold over eight and a half minutes in ways that will mess with your head every time no matter how many times you hear it. the exclusive b-side track, nein könig nein (no king no!), meanwhile, is slightly gentler on the face of it: it’s less about sonic pressure, more about hip-shaking syncopation. but it too tells strange fairytales in its peculiar and brain-tweaking accumulation of detail, and though you’ll hear archetypal sounds from the heart of house and disco in it, every last one of them becomes new and otherworldly.

despite all the collaborations on last years amygdala by pampa cult leader dj koze, there was still one recurring comment from the public: the album still had dj kozes trademark stamp all over it.

2023 repress - dj koze might be one of the worlds best producers, but above all hes a dj, and it’s his dj ear that governs. just as in a great set, so with his releases: seeing aliens came out of nowhere, a big buzzing beast of a track, to announce that koze was back on the scene and prime everyone for the coming album, knock knock. but now that koze has your attention, it’s time to remind everyone what’s most important about club music, pull things back, take a turn to the left, and get deep into the groove. thus pick up: the second single from knock knock is 100% pure groove, doubly so in the extended 12inch version. in a sense its incredibly familiar it is essentially a filter disco record, very close to something you could imagine coming out of paris around the turn of the millennium. but of course, this is koze. nothing is normal or familiar in his world, and hes taken this most foundational of clubland staples into new territory

dj koyote and too smooth christ team up to release on some party tunes, a 3-track ep of collaborative and spontaneous jams. willing to produce coupe-decale-inspired tracks with old analogue gear, they crafted at the end an hybrid sound mixture, somewhere between south african house, grime and uk funky. on error : does not computer, a tr606 meets swirling arpeggios spiced with crystal riffs. a sneaky bass line provides an even more swaying groove to the track. on strike (on-a-string mix), a straight-out-of-pretoria riff meets a strong and conquering string stab on top of a really dry and thumping beat. modern action is the most introspective track of the ep, with an m1 pattern flipped upside-down and hazy cymbals rythms.

ghana s dj katapila is back with more minimalist dance music productions, this time inspired in part by his travels overseas. following the success of the re-release of his trotro recording a couple years ago, katapila has been playing in europe and the uk, bringing his style of breakneck-paced, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink west african club music into a very different conte, giving katapila (real name ishmael abbey) inspiration in the kind of music he has heard in places like london. so he made some new music, here we go!

khalab has arrived onthecorner with ‘zaire’. ‘zaire’ is the beginning of a new narrative for the artist. in this first chapter khalab creates urgent compositions with layers of sound from the past, present and future. ‘zaire’ is underpinned by an intensely pounding heart of other-worldly percussion. the collaged loops frenetically jab in syncopation breaking off when the inherent swing casts its discrete groove to summon the dance. unrelenting waves of synthlines, basslines and rhythm find harmony amongst the melodic chants and distortion.

dj koyote has long been a dab hand at discerning house music. thankfully, his latest offers more of the same. seeing the light of day on his own supergenius records imprint, france n trance sees the french producer perk up with no less than five original cuts, each of which boasts its own inimitable charm. opening up the release is the sounds of the title track. a melancholy effort full of warm, hazy vibes, its skipping, playful ethos is characterised by its twinkling, charming melodies. a smile-inducing track that s sure to prompt delirium on the floor, it gets us underway with some distinction. hey baby sees the producer opt for more uptempo strands. featuring a killer hip hop vocal sample and a series of off-kilter elements, it s a completely different proposition to what s come before - albeit one that emphasises the producer s knack for the unpredictable. just a young thing sees the producer hark bark to vintage chicago times with a jam that could well have been lifted from trax s back catalogue. full of booming kicks, claps and snares, this one plays out like a modern interpretation of a classic armando joint. the quite expertly names ladonna is an exercise is peak-time funk flavours, before business class sees us out the door with another track that suited to the night s most fervent moments. an industrial-tinged track of techno persuasions, it s a hot and heaving effort that s as likely to leave you in a cold sweat as it is reaching for the lasers. there s no doubt about it - koyote s latest is a triumph from the beginning to the end.

ivory puzzle – dj krust a straight up banger from dj krusts -cloaking- bass era. like many tracks from the time, it s working simplicity was it s defining factor. a very hooky arpeggiated intro and breakdown and an unrelenting drum and bass workout, the track steps up a gear getting more intense every sixteen bars taking the dance floor on the musical equivalent of a nitro fuelled sprint down a drag strip.
flip it – dj krust a futuristic roller with sampled funk breakbeats reminiscent of -true stories- and -soul in motion-. like many of the krust and full cycle releases this was a tune screaming to be mixed with others, it s unexpected drum edits and fx popping in and out making it impossible to tell when one tune ended and another began. the resonating b-line always sounded huge on a rig and paved the way for a myriad of future generations of bass ideas. quite a rare tune, only krust, die and bryan g had this on dubplate.

>i keep asking myself where they take all that brilliant music from. its just as if somebody had poked a bees nest and then it all burst out. i feel deeply connected to the pampa style…< (terry hogann, the musical mistress, 10/2010). as was to be expected, pampa is steadily developing into a platform for cross-border electronic dance music. each pampa release sounds different from the previous and still pampa remains a conclusive musical planet. this is all the more surprising in the case of pampa005, which features two completely different artists: side a: nathan fake - xmas rush having reportedly recorded his track >xmas rush< in his london studio during a jam session, nathan fake (border community, traum, saw) has turned in a total brainfuck. its mercylessly exaggerated, psychedelic, inexorable, and at the same time sweet and heart-warming. a very rare mixture. unique in its consistency, we havent heard anything like it since the 90s. its so nice and overwhelming to have your ears exercised the right way again. evergreen… side aa: dj koze pays tribute to michael smith - >mi cyaan believe it< in the meantime, dj koze has moved on to completely different spheres. once again, he astonishes his public with an extremely danceable version of michael smiths >mi cyaan believe it<. having originally started off as a digital error, and recorded within a single night, this tune recalls the ruthlessness, rawness and revolutionary energy of public enemy
